There are CSD (Clean and Strip Discs) Discs for the angle grinder. They are also made from nylon, also only remove the paint and won't damage the fiberglass. They do last a relatively long time. I think this is the product you've been looking for 😉 We've used them to strip a large amount of paint and also rust from our 82ft steel hull. But they do also work on fiberglass. All the best from Flying Coney ⛵

@@SailingUma Which of these solutions, if any would work best to strip old antifouling? We want to remove "everything" to apply a two-part Epoxy sealer and a copper based antifouling. How many layers down would we need to go? @SailingUma used nylon cleaning disks. What grit did you use? @FlyingConey suggested CSDs (Clean and Strip Disks). (were too rough?) And @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac9598 suggested a Surface Conditioning Tool. We don't want to swallow the cost of sandblasting, but hope to avoid sanding for weeks on end. Any help greatly appreciated.

As a fiberglass professional, just a word of advice. Make sure you seal all the glass that you sanded in the end if you have not glassed to it.
@JohnDoe-ex8gf
@JohnDoe-ex8gf Жыл бұрын
Fibreglass semi-pro here. When you laminate it, there is an outer layer of waterproof epoxy (or polyester). When you sand it, the bare fibreglass get's exposed and could suck up moisture. Not sure if that is what Roger meant though.

Fibreglass ends will wick moisture, just mix up some resin and do a resin “wipe over everything and it will seal it up. Peace of mind is priceless 😎
@rogerheuckeroth7456
@rogerheuckeroth7456 Жыл бұрын
@@charonstyxferryman It is to seal in the glass fibers that are exposed. Glass fibers can absorb moisture swell leading to delimitation. All they need to do is apply resin over the exposed fibers. If using polyester of vinyl ester resin the seal coat should have a wax additive. Can also use a gel-coat with wax

The cup-shaped brush is used at an angle, not straight on, so it always rests on the surface to be cleaned in a single point, exerting torque in only one direction, so the drill is controlled as well as with the cup-shaped brush disk.

Ventilation is very important in a confined space like that, especially with that much dust. A fan set up to pull air out through an open hatch would work wonders. When ventilating a confined space, always pull air out do not blow air in. Sucking more effective in exchanging the air than pushing air in is.

I did similar work on my boat. Get a box fan and tape an HVAC filter to it. Set it right next to where you’re grinding. Also use coarse sandpaper instead of grinding type tools. You end up with a coarser particulate that’s harder to get airborne. It’s slower work though. Like all things on a boat…trade offs.

The high pitch side effect sounds was surprisingly funny! It made me remember a toy from the 70s, a pipe of the same type but with a slightly larger diameter, 60 mm maybe and a length about a meter. You spunn it around and it made a sound a bit like a Didgeridoo, the frequency varied from how fast you spunn it. Maybe not the most fun toy but it was a thing at one time.

That shreaky hose whistle is caused from that convoluted hose you are using. I mounted a 39 dollar shop vac in my engine room and plumbed it using that same kind of hose up to a fitting I made that the hose that comes with the shop vacuum can be inserted and use this system as and like a central vacuum cleaning system. I never have dig out the shop vacuum anymore, just the hose and fitting and clean up more easily. I ended up changing the convoluted hose between vacuum and bulkhead fitting with a smooth bore hose and that shreaking sound went away. It's a pretty cool and inexpensive way to add a central vacuum system onto your boat. I used a normal light switch mounted up in the galley to turn it on.

You’re half-way to a burnishing drum with your adapted brush wheels. Same sort of thing, but a cylinder 4 inches long. You can get them for mounting in a drill, but for our project of stripping a log house for refinishing, we picked up a couple of purpose built tools, basically a grinder with an extra handle, and a quick-change arbor you can change the drum on quickly. Available with bristles, sand-paper drums, or a combo sandpaper/scotch-brite flapwheel combo, which is great for curved and softer surfaces. Metabo makes a kit, Craftsman makes one that’s kind of a single-drum belt sander, or vervor sells an economical one.

Solving engineering challenges brilliantly as always. Here’s a cheat option you probably already considered and threw out… you can get 90 degree converters for some drills - uses a bit more energy in the gears, makes a little more noise… but now you can hold the drill real good. Anyways, keep whistling! (No, not you, vacuum hose!!)

Keeps all of that dust out of your own clothes and body. No Itch! Careful with your whistling vac hose. Static electricity build up. Usually requires a grounding wire. Nasty shock. Fire. Even teiggers explosions, in some cases. 👁️🔧🤯🔧👁️

Yeah, those wire wheels, the steel and brass, are mainly for removing corrosion off of various metals. Nice work adapting those nylon wheels to your angle grinder. When you mount them in the drill, you don't use them like an orbital sander. You make contact with the edge of it, with the rotation of the edge heading toward you so that it pulls away from you. You'll be able to control it best that way.

You will need to carefully judge the force/pressure you use to not dig into the fiberglass structure of Uma.
