Another boat wouldn't necessarily be easier, it would just be different problems. I now am part of my local sailing club and hope one day I will see you guys on the open water (fingers crossed). I know you guys are attached to little old Uma but I don't think I could live on such a small vessel for so many years. Having the right sized vessel is important to fit your lifestyle, I believe it is more important to maximize your enjoyment. I have sailed a 36' yacht and feel a 42' would be more along the lines of comfort while still holding onto small living. I know for myself I would love to one day buy a used 42' boat (or in that neighbourhood of size). Oh and watch out for those killer orcas forming near Morocco when you finally get Uma sailing again.

Added a deck and cabin, and redesigned the sails and mast. I did acquire the help of the late Ted Brewer, who tutored me on many aspects of what I was attempting. Hey guys. You two are really hardcore tearing into a major fiberglass job during a Sardinian summer! I have stripped the entire interior from a couple lightly built glass hulls and rebuilt them. I found on some boats that as you also mention that some of the original shape of the hull has changed. Like big flat areas of the hull were pressed inwards from just the water pressure. Take a few flexible wooden battens and check the hull for fairness. Put a level on both ends of the boat and see if you have any twist from the way the boat is blocked etc. You can usually use temp wood struts and wedges to push and pull the hull closer to a fair shape before you start glassing in bulkheads and stiffeners. You can end up with a much better boat at the end. Very best of luck to you! J&J

And that's why you're the BEST sailing channel on KZbin. You're one of the originals, and you're still on the same boat....unlike the other big channels. I'm so happy you're fixing Uma...she deserves it.

Well done you two, it’s so right to do the work on her, she deserves to sail on for years to come. ❤️👍🏻

I love your attitude, not everything that is getting old needs to be thrown away, I hope you get Uma back into shape and make her an awesome little sailboat again.

I'm glad you're doing a complete refit. I hope you get lots of content out of it plus maybe you can use some of your design ideas that you were studying when you took the poll.

I had a chat with UMA, and she said "Thank you for saving me" so it seems like you are doing the right thing. Love your work.

If memory serves, you were the first sailing channel I found...three years ago, after being quarantined. I fell in love with the channel and the three of you. You remain my favorite (of the 40 or so sailing channels I follow) sailing channel. Make her your own and better than new! I'll be here living vicariously through you. Onward and upward, Umans!

A+ for recognizing the value in older things! Just because something ages does not mean it should be torn down and thrown out. Uma has provided you both with so much and it's great you want to give back to her! Let'er rip! I can't wait to see the beautiful end result!

Super excited about this! I came in to your channel after you had already sailed across the Pacific, so to now be able to see these updates "live" is so exciting! Good luck!!

There are so many 100 year old sailing vessels still in use around the world, and its because of people like you. With a solid hull and decent rig, there are any number of internal layouts a yacht can take, once stability is the prime consideration. After that it's completely down to ergonomics, and modern materials permit anything once a strong imagination is present.

I love the design that Catalina 34 did years ago. Moving the head aft on the port side. It changed the entire layout of the boat opening up a ton of room. Can't wait to see your ideas come to life.

It makes so much sense! So many smaller boats have the pooper right in the V berth. It’s like, c’mon, I want my wife to actually WANT to be on the boat, lol…

I like your answer on why you are restoring. We've become such a throwaway society.

Look on this as a life lesson you maybe missed in your youth, I am 54 and at 19 I had an opportunity to go to university to study electronics but it was a 3 year course, at 19 three years seems an eternity so I chose not to do it, later in life I did get into engineering and aerospace but spent the majority of my youth on building sites doing manual labour.., Parlay Revival is a perfect example of how there is light at the end of the tunnel.., every day you work is another day closer to getting UMA back out onto the water where she belongs.., stay the course.

Props for actually doing "something" at 19! I am also 54 and when I was 19 I looked at all the things to do, and decided to go get drunk at a party! That party lasted until I was well into my 30's (maybe a little into the 40's) and I was fortunate to pull myself out of that world in time to make something of a life for myself! I have no regrets, but things could always be better with a good bit of hindsight!

So many people talk the talk, and it stops there. You guys also walk the walk. So inspiring to see. You rebuild because you can and have the means and don't wanna be wasteful. People should learn from you.

I hear you on keeping "Classic Plastic" going. I have an Ericson 27 that came off the mold in 1973, so is turning 50 this year. She's a stout little boat and is still going strong, and last year, I suppose as a gift for her 50th, we did a massive upgrade and rebuild of her electrical system. Well maintained, and well loved, these old boats can keep going a long, long time.

Been watching since Step 1... well, off and on to be honest... but no one in the entire world is more capable or talented than you two when it comes to rebuilding Uma and making her better. Cheers!
