The famous Swedish sailor and shipowner Sven Salén (1890-1969) first used the genoa on his 6 m R-yacht May-Be by the 1926 in Coppa del Tirreno in Genoa, hence the name. He successfully used it during the Scandinavian Gold Cup's races of 1927 in Oyster Bay (US). Sven Salén also pioneered the parachute spinnacre. (Wikipedia)

This makes no sense but I’m proud of you guys. For several years now, I have enjoyed your journey so much. In fact, you are a big part of the motivation for a series of decisions that led to long weekends like the one just ended, sailing around the Salish Sea with my 13-year-old, making up the itinerary as we go, in the fog and the currents and the light wind, ghosting along and not minding one bit. Thank you for being part of our story.

The fore triangle is the area bordered by the headstay, deck and mast. Headsails are generally referred to as a percentage of the fore triangle area. A 150% or 155% is usually the largest genoa. Genoas are generally the larger headsails who's clew extends aft of the mast. The rest of the genoas and jibs may be referred to as a 130%, 110%, working jib, 70% blade/spinnaker staysail and the smallest being the storm jib. Then there are spinnakers ie; symmetrical, asymmetrical, gennaker/Code Zero/Code D. These are historic generalizations that apply to sloop rigged vessels. Sails and sail plans have and continue to evolve along with their respective glossary of terms and localized slang versions thereof.

Great episode.. as always.. epic to see you in that mast.. I was thought sailing 40+ years ago… they thought me that this: First measure distance mast to attachment point in bottom of the forestay. Genoa… foresail measured on the foot ( the bottom part ) from bow to over the mast 110% of the length or up to 150% of that length (mast to bow attachment point. ) Jib: all sails similar to Genoa but with less than 100% of that same distance. Storm job being the smallest then job 1,2,3 Standard Genoa 120%, 110 the minimum 150 the sail mounted when on a furler… ( this was before we ever heard of code zero )

Sheet! When a new Sailing Uma comes out, I delay watching because I want to have the right time where I can savor it. Liked the slip in of Monty Python. When I was 19 and started crewing, my skipper was giving me some trivia such as, some people call that a jib but technically it's a genoa. It was a lot of fun watching high level sailors and locals give their definitions. Loved it.

thx guys for the episode. In Dutch we call this a Genoa as well but the smaller ones are called " Fok" (yes sounds the same in dutch as "f@ck). Lots of smaller boats on our lakes go with a main and a fok. The newest one is always the "stormfok" 4 obvious reasons.

Getting to go up a tall mast like that is a life long memory that very few people get to experience. I got to do the same thing aboard TeVega that is now called Deva. It's a 165 ft. long gaff rigged schooner and 164 ft. tall. It was a wild ride under sail just like you experienced but much more radical because of being 164 ft. up.

From your comment about ease in leaving the dock... I am imagining a different kind of sailboat competition... All the boats show up and the announcement is made that this year the competition will be a little different.... They will be judging on the following categories: Quickest to be ready to leave the dock Cleanest head Best veggie dip Most original knot Logo with the most colors Prettiest prop Tallest fender I mean really... so what if one boat can go faster than another...

ChatGPT Ahoy there, matey! Thanks a bunch for droppin' anchor in Genoa! 🏴‍☠ Hope ye had a jolly good time explorin' the very city where Christopher Columbus set sail into the history books! 🚢💨 Even if all yer curious sailing questions weren't answered, fear not! Sailing's gotta keep some of its legends shrouded in mystery, or else it loses its enchantin' allure! ⚓🧭 So, here's to embracin' the mysticism of the high seas and all the unforgettable adventures that lie ahead! Fair winds and smooth sailin'! 🌊😄 See you soon on our boat.

Funy episode. Genua is a quite big overlapping headsail in the time spreaders were narrow and not angeled backwards like on modern boats. That is why modern sailboats dont have it because the spreaders are too wide and that the haidsail cant go around them except for a big code zero. So on modern sailboats you have only jibs with limited overlap and they stay in front of the spreaders.

Looks like a fun few days. I have been out on one of the older America Cup boats on Sydney Harbour - probably at least the vintage of your legend, if not older, and it's definitely a different kind of sailing. Especially if you are just grinding, you have no idea which rope you are actually adjusting! I suspect modern racing boats go too fast for a Genoa, once you factor in apparent wind.

I used to sail with my uncle on the east coast in his 23ft sail boat. I love the terminology, yelling coming about when tacking,so you dont get knocked off the boat and flipping the lines of the Genova while tacking. So quite and peaceful until you have to tack again. Loved it Great video. Hey i wonder who gave all these sails their names? Hmm

I thought it's a jib unless it extends past the mast, then it's a genoa, and then spinnaker was a "forward facing" sail for downwind akin to the same function of a square rig.

Hi guys As an Italian I explain to you what difference ill name of the city of Genoa and the name Genoa; there is no difference, Gnova is the modern name, the current one, Genoa is the ancient Latin name of the city.
