Your attention to the small details is something I see in all of the sailing videos that I watch.. Something as simple as a locker gets treated like it is a major component of the boat.. Nice video...

***** good work,its those little odd job skills that can help you pick up a little extra cash as you sail from marina to marina there are plenty of boats out there screaming for some love i read a story about a guy who sailed half the world funded by restoring shagged varnish on boats as he went

razzorbladz I would love to live like that! :) There is a lot of satisfaction in doing little odd jobs :) As long as there is enough money for food and to take care of the boat that would be amazing :)

me two,plus it could be handy to have the skills to live like that with Russia and America going at it you never know when the time may come when getting in our sailboats and heading to a beautiful deserted island may be a smart move LOL

Hi Mads! Another idea would be to exchange the horizontal 'straps' for some of the aluminum rod, which could run in a wire cage on either side of the locker opening. You simply lay out the webbing to the length you want, doubled for front and back, then add for each rod diameter. Sew the pockets for the rods in the vertical straps and let the rods free-float side to side for the horizontals. A fairly heavy gauge single wire on the inside of the locker sides would contain the rods, and would only need to be secured at top and bottom. It would have an eye for a screw on each end, then a 90 degree bend so the eye lays flat on the bulkhead, a straight section slightly larger than the diameter of the rod and then a 90 degree bend, a long straight section the length of the opening, then a 90 and another 90. You get the idea.The weight of the rods will pull the whole apparatus into the hidey-hole under the bottom shelf. When sewing the pockets for the rods, use what we call a 'zipper foot', a foot that allows you to sew close to zippers, which has one toe narrower that the other. No painting or epoxying to mess with. The rods will give a bit better structure to the webbing so heavier stuff won't tend to bulge out the opening, and will look good as well. If you wanted to get fancy, you could use colored anodized rod.

SV HEXE Thanks :) I'm very satisfied with the locker so far. We'll see if that is the case by the end of summer too :) Yikes, rain and snow doesn't sound fun! Crossing my fingers, you'll get a bit of sunshine soon. It's crazy how big of a difference that makes :)

The locker is looking good! I would suggest using either stainless or nylon spring clips to attach the webbing. The type used for curtain rods or fishing rods may work well a and snap into place without the need for elastic.

wonderful Project. What a great use of a small space. I like the elastic idea to support it although the mounts on each side might be more secure and long lasting. Elastic will age and need replacing every year or so. Maybe velcro? Anyway great project. Might have to do something like this on my boat soon! Headed Back to the Bahamas for 2 more months aboard. Pix and maybe a vid to follow! Keep um coming Mads. Love what you do!

ScubaTony Anschutz Thanks, Tony! :) I'm heading to the boat tomorrow to play around with different solutions. I'm not sure I'll find the best possible solution right now, but I can always modify it later :) You should definitely shot some video! Look at most of the huge sailing YT channels - sailing in crystal blue water seems very popular ;)

***** Thanks, Nico :) Of course I haven't tried using the tiny locker yet but it seems more practical to have a couple of shelves (over a hanging locker). I'd love to see what modifications you would do to the tiny locker :)

Hi Mads, my wife and I were enjoying your video today and we thought how nice it was starting to look. When I thought about how you were dropping the webbing into the bottom of the locker I thought perhaps you might like to drill a small hole in the lower tubing to prevent having the tube move around or slide out of position in the webbing.
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
David Richards Thank you so much :) I was planning on doing something like that. I spend a good amount of time worrying about how I would solve that problem. Turns out the eight vertical straps of webbing kind of locks the tubing in place. I'll try to demonstrate it in the next video :)

Nice work on the locker. As I watched it came to mind that a roller shade might have been less work and it would self store when rolled up. You could cut holes in the shade to mimic the lattice you created with the webbing.... Your work and design however looks first rate.

Looks great, but we have a saying in America "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" meaning that you can get a bit too caught up in details to ever finish. The lower shelf looks fine, in fact likely better than most production boats made today. I would not worry so much.

Another idea for you on your shelf supports you could shelf pins along with a shelf pin drilling jig. This would allow you to easily adjust the shelf height. You would need to route a few notches in to the bottom of your shelves to mate up with the pins but it would offer you more flexibility in the long run. Here is a shelf pin drill jig. www.amazon.com/KREG-KMA3200-Shelf-Pin-Drilling/dp/B005FKX6D8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428709043&sr=8-1&keywords=shelf+peg+drilling+jig and here are shelf pins. www.amazon.com/Pioneer-0946998-50-Nickel-Shelf-Pin/dp/B003DCC77Q/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_y If those particular ones aren't available over there I am sure you can find something comparable.

Chadd Thompson Another awesome idea :) I did consider something like that before starting the project. I have a bunch of little plastic shelf pins from a big Ikea closet. The space is so confined inside the locker I considered drilling the holes in pieces of plywood and then mounting those pieces to the bulkheads. Aboard my next boat, I want to do something along the lines of what you are suggesting:) I plan on keeping my next boat for the rest of my life and my storage needs might change over time. Excellent suggestion, thanks! :)

Mads, Not sure if you can get them over there but I use a Black and Decker 20V cordless matrix drill that you can attach different attachments to the motor part. You can get everything from a Sander, to a circular saw for it. I am normally not a Black and Decker guy but for boat projects I have found it very useful. www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDCDMT1206KITC-Matrix-Combo/dp/B00PK4XY90/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1428708650&sr=8-2&keywords=black+and+decker+matrix that kit is missing the circular say attachment though it is here. www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDCMTTS-Matrix-Attachment/dp/B009V5C616/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_y and a storage bag for all of it. www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDCMTSB-Wide-Mouth-Storage/dp/B00FFZQ11M/ref=pd_bxgy_hi_img_z
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Chadd Thompson Dang! If those kits work it would be an awesome set of tools to have aboard! I have been thinking a lot about how I'm going to store my expensive tools once I move aboard. I might keep all of them at my parents house until I upgrade to a bigger boat. A kit like that one would be easy to find space for aboard Obelix. I'm sure I can't get it over here, but I'm going to the US in a little over a month ;) Seems like I might need a step-up transformer to charge the battery (220V over here). Thanks for sharing the links. I'll definitely be looking for a kit like that one!:)
@chaddthompson9 жыл бұрын
***** I have been happy with the black and decker matrix kit. Sears also markets the exact same tools under the craftsman brand. Don't get me wrong the tools are never going to be quite as good as having dedicated tools but they work very well for boat projects and you have everything at hand.

What has happened to the out takes.
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Mikel Garman Turns out the outtakes were actually hurting my videos rating. KZbin has some somewhat usable analytics reports. It's quite clear that the vast majority of viewers skipped or stopped watching as soon as the outtakes start. I do want to bring the outtakes back I just need to figure out what can make them fun for a bigger percentage of viewers :) If anybody has any suggestions I would love for you to share them! :)
@mikelgarman9 жыл бұрын
guess some like some dont. . Hard to serve all but best to serve the majority. Guess our small sailing group just has a different sense of humor. When asked last week what happened to the out takes by couple of the women when we posted and shared your video on Facebook i told them i had no idea but would ask you. Personally i like your videos either way. Now i can say i have been guilty of watching videos and once i know it is over with a goodbye i usually go to the next one. so many like to say goodbye and then have 5 minutes of credits to everybody like the end of a movie. i never hang around for that part. We have been with you from video one and our group will continue to share them. Mikel

Mikel Garman Thank you so much, Mikel :) I appreciate the support very much! :) My channel isn't growing as fast as it did back in December/January. Knowing that you have been with me from day one and are still enjoying the videos means a lot to me :) Making these videos have never been about getting a high number of subscribers but knowing that people appreciate them is a good motivational factor :) I too skip long intros and outros I think the majority of people do :)
