Good work. I was glad to see you're draining the anchor locker out board, there is a good reason why all the newer boats do so. You won't regret keeping that primordial ooze from the chain out of your bilge, not to mention the green water from the bow through the chain pipe.
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
05Cat28 Thanks :) Draining overboard does seem like a better solution. It would be fun to hear from someone that prefers draining to the bilge :)

Nice work Mads. You make it all look so easy. So many poeple would love to drill holes in their boat but can't work up the courage. Obelix looks great and the videos are enjoyable (although i would have loved to see some out takes from this episode). I bet you would get stuck in thet locker hatch now.

Good job again Mads, glad you emphasized sealing the deck core materiel. A step that gets passed over all to often and leads to you know what later.
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Orange Fish Thanks :) Replacing the core in a rotten deck is definitely not something I would enjoy ;) In my case the foam in the sandwich construction isn't as prone to rot as something like balsa wood. Regardless sealing the edges of the hole with thickened epoxy can't hurt :)

As always, I enjoyed the video. Some stainless steel, fiberglass, or plastic screen might be a good idea on the drain hole to keep wasps and other insects from building a nest in your chain locker.

OUtstanding. very fun start to finish. LIghtning is that one thing that scares the crap out of me on my boat. WE get a lot of summer squalls around here and there is really not many places to hide. I also appreciate the splicing very much. I too enjoy it for some odd reason. I think there is a sense of self sufficiency in it and also knowing that your custom lines are just exactly the length and size you need. Great work on the locker. Quality work as always. ST

Hi Mads, Great vid as usual! Make sure you seal up everything that exposes foam extra well. Although rare it can cause some big issues if water gets in eg. mould, extra weight and in extreme cases separating the hull (the last is rather embarrassingly learnt through prior experience) Safe boating!
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Charlie Reed Separating the hull? Yikes, that sounds bad! I'd love to hear that story :) I've heard of a few Ballads where the fiberglass in the deck has let go of the foam in small areas. The fix is to drill tiny holes and inject epoxy. Seems to hold up well :)

it happens finding a tool after buying the same. Some would just clean it up and return it. Although, having a spare never hurt. Especially when one is working around boats!

Another stella video ! Lots of content and entertainment. The Lightning was fun - did you discover that adrenalin really was brown? So all is clear, the bulkhead is not watertight. You will have the chain locker draining to main bilge (via hose penetrations) and if it gets deep enough through the hole you deliberately drilled in your hull. Were you able to get your hand through the hawsepipe lid to tighten the securing nuts - or did I miss that? BTW : Good move with the solar umbrella .😉 Keep up the good work and good luck with the US trip planning.

I am a new comer to your videos they are alot of fun to watch and have been trying to watch them all. My question is about the paint you used in your chain locker. Do you know if there is any reason you cant paint all the interior fiberglass on your boat. I personally like the smooth finish look of paint on all my interior fiberglass, like a newly painted bilge; even if it is below a hatch or behind a cabinet. Love to hear your thoughts. Also, if you ever make it to The Bahamas let me know. Thanks.

After watching in perfect order almost all of your playlists, it is time for my first comment. I'm amazed by the prolixity in making the projects (english is not my mother language too). Also about your ability with the tools and the materials, and the time you invest in making the molds for the parts, I'm really learning a lot from your videos and I want to thank you for that. I landed in you channel after watching you with Alfy on the Moonshine, and I'm very happy about it. One single question: did you rotate the bracket in the water hose in order to be easily accessible with the screwdriver now from this new tiny hole? Cheers!! George, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Sorry to ask but it looked like you were installing the chain opening facing aft. Did I not see it right. I think the lid opens facing forward otherwise the chain or rode has to go over the top of the lid. There's a cutaway for the lid to close over the chain going into the locker. Mike PS: rope work is great fun. It was one of my favorite things to do when I was in the Navy and I do all my own rigging now on my boat.
@JoelWelter9 жыл бұрын
Mike Blackburn Now that you mentioned it, I noticed that, too. Good pick up!
@mb973559 жыл бұрын
Mine doesn't have the hinged lid, just a cap on a chain but the cutout for the chain faces forward.
@JoelWelter9 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, I'm a motor guy (but want to switch to sail) and mine is the same as yours. I wasn't paying attention to the details, until you mentioned it, and thought it was fine, until I replayed it in my head. Let's see what Mads does...
@SailLife9 жыл бұрын
Mike Blackburn joel1239871 Don't worry guys :) The opening is facing forward. I considered facing it sideways like Jakob (kzbin.info) has aboard his boat but decided to mount it so that the lit opens facing forward. The lid is spring loaded, and I think I'll need to come up with some contraption to keep the lid open while I'm raising the anchor.
@treeefrogUK7 жыл бұрын
A short bungee around that cleat behind the chain hole and just use the hooks to hold the lid open? And proof - if any were needed - that all you need to do to find a missing tool, etc is ..... ... buy a replacement! :D

I was very suprised to see how thick you deck is... Is the hull as thick ? I assume that with that insulation, it would certainly stop, or reduce condensation... BTW - A really well produced video.... I have now subscribed, ready to watch all your adventures..... Good luck :)

john wheatley Welcome aboard :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The hull is solid fiberglass and is far less thick.
