The past few weeks I've been watching the entire refit of Athena.. Currently you've just installed the nav desk and have the head mocked up in cardboard. Feels a bit like time travel watching a new upload after a week straight of watching years old vids hahaha. I'm dreading the day I run out of the old vids and have to wait a WHOLE WEEK between new uploads! 😰😂

Thank you :) Between you and me I wanted to be an electrician when I was younger but had a bad experience with the local electrician in grade 9 when I was there for two weeks as a part of a "figure out what you want to be when you grow up"-program at school. They were so horrible to each other and to me. If the work environment had been better there then I'd properly have been an electrician today.

@@SailLifelol exactly the same, you probably dodged a bullet though, you could have easily ended up in one of the multiple bad companies that probably outnumbers the healthy ones.

The hazing and work environment in the USA within the electrical trade in the late 80's and early 90's could be quite brutal for new apprentices and pre-apprentices. From everything I heard growing up as a third-generation electrician things were even worse before that. One needed to put their time in as the lowest rung on the totem pole and poo rins downhill so to speak with traditional behaviors and folks thinking that the way things were when they were in that position, and now it is their tum to get theirs back on the new guys. It could be even worse if they knew your family and maybe had a few personal scores to settle on the next generation. Not that it was all bad but one needed to grow a VERY tough skin and learn to really do what everyone expected of a grunt on the very bottom and not get a reputation as a baby or a complainer. After 5-6 years of that one graduated as a journeyman and got a little more respect for finishing off the program. The pay was very good , especially if one got into management and ran jobs as a foreman and got extra pay and profit-sharing incentives for making the shop owners lots and lots of money. If you were good at getting results you could literally name your own terms and maybe retire at age 50 and go live on a sailboat. :D

Congratulations on getting your certification and for adding another thing to my to-do list🤣. The course sounds like a lot of fun and it will be on this coming winter’s schedule. On a side note, thank you for turning us onto your favorite varnish combo. We tested four different manufacturers to pick a finish for our new cherry interior but would not have included Interlux without your recommendation. It is the one we prefer so a huge thank you for that!

This is brilliant stuff for people who want to learn and potentially follow you. Please, please do a video(s) about your boat buying options. It would be great to have your perspective on {{ random_boat }} - why you like it, hate it etc. There's a KZbin channel where a guy goes around and appraises boats - the one with the stuffed dog. It would be great to see you give your opinions on a range of boats.

Prrrrroooobably going to be the only one to say this but I would love to see a series of videos on DC wiring. While virtually everyone else in the universe hates 12v wiring, I actually really enjoy it. I'm always happy when I have a new doodad that needs to be wired in or some previous project "needs" to be rewired in an even more robust way. Seeing your videos I've been thinking I might do the course.

Welcome back Ava! Congratulation Mads on your successful certification. I sold a boat that I spent almost 10 years upgrading and keeping very detailed records. When I sold the boat, I must have asked the buyer when an how I could get all my records to him. He obviously wasn't at all interested. Not everyone is like US!!

The single biggest question I have in boat electrical is about grounding when using an isolation transformer, an inverter like Victron Multiplust II and a boat side main panel RCD breaker. Where do you combine the ground and neutral on the boat side? According to ABYC 11.7.2.6, this should be done on the isolation transformer but I would have thought it should be done at the boat side mains where the RCD is installed. Is it just important that it only be done in one spot and ABYC just chose the isolation transformer, when present? This makes more of an issue if you add a second 30A circuit to the boat with separate second isolation transformer and inverter (something one considers when going pure electric).

Hiya. You mentioned that the ABYC had made a comment or section about Lithium Batteries ? Would you mind repeating what they have Said Please ? This could be extremely important, as from what I’m hearing, All insurance companies now have a get out clause regarding fires on boats, to the effect that if Lithium Batteries are on the boat, insurance cover is nullified ? I’m not in a position to verify this presently, as I’m still recovering from Respiratory Failure ehich led to Pneumonia and Heart Failure Bletchley.but right now, for my next Sailboat, I’m sticking with an AGM Batteries setup, until the likely insurance situation gets resolved? After which, any additional lithium batteries can reach approved standards. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales.🤔👍🌟🌟👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧⛵️

I have to take a D.O.T. CFR 49 test every 4 years. The thing about such open book tests is they teach you how to use the book to do something that perhaps wasn't covered in the classes, but as you we taught how to use the book, can now look up what you need to know. Shockingly (not), it is amazing how so many people get stupid simple, stupid wrong. Even large companies get things expensively wrong. It can be even more fun, like when you ask for clarification from the DOT, if they get the answer wrong, (like say the Sec Of Transportation themselves tells you it is okay, and it is later determined that it is not) you are still liable, and they will fine you for doing what they told you you could do. Doubt ABYC is that bad.
