After a couple weeks, I've made it through almost 185 videos. May have skipped some early ones. Without a doubt, the best education I've had in boats - although I admit I am a total noob. I can't say enough how much I appreciate the details on what you are doing, and how you discuss options, technical difficulties, products, construction details, and on and on. Your editing for entertainment and good effect are fantastic. I love watching sailing and travelling videos, but this is by far the most educational channel I am subscribed to when it comes to boats. Outstanding stuff. I am a little older than you by a few years (same birthday, BTW), but am working towards my sailing certifications, and hoping to retire a bit early to a boat and full time cruising - so I am soaking all info up like a sponge, as I'm sure you understand. I'd even watch sanding videos. :-) Cheers from Oregon!!!

I installed the exact same evaporator onboard my boat.. I put it in horizontally so freezing ice cubes and other smaller foods is made easy... Possibly roughly the same size as your fridge, but a different shape, that is not completely square. I was a little irritated that it didn't come with a small 'door' to the freezer compartment which you have to buy separate. Also bought from Hjertmans... Well happy with my set up.. Great vid as always. I do enjoy following you on your channel and I find it hard to believe that people are rude to you.. Oh well, there are knobs all over the world.. Warren s/y Legend

Great video again Mads. I'd vote for vertical installation of the freezer. I think easier freezer access is more important than a horizontal freezer element. And you could easily DIY your own trays or ice cube bags. If it was my boat, I'd install a beer tap and run the tubing via the freezer compartment for chilling said beer keg.
@SailBeforeSunset8 жыл бұрын
Hey, Mads. Great update! Interesting that you went with the evaporator plate, as opposed to the cold plate system. We've had both. I'm sure you have a good reason for going that route, and I don't question it. As a fellow engineer, I know that you've researched the difference and the power requirements of both. You're one of the few EEs that I know, that can also do woodwork!
@SailBeforeSunset8 жыл бұрын
***** You have a good point. We never were going to mount horizontally, so the cold plate was always the answer. Perhaps the evaporator plate is best for vertical mounting. I know that the cold plate stores cold more efficiently, but mounting is really important.

Hi Mads. Outside & Stuff alluded to the vacuum on the sander, but could you not have tucked the vacuum hose anywhere inside the tent, creating a negative pressure and pulled most of the airborne dust into it. You would still have had the heavy dust falling down, but the airborne stuff is your biggest problem. A major project. Good luck with it and keep up the great videos.

Evaporator mounting: I believe horizontal mounting will give you the ability to make ice with small ice trays and store some small frozen goods within the evaporator. For defrosting the evaporator, would it make sense to add a drain plug to your refrigerator compartment? Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your adventures with us!

Nice job on the wall patch! The fridge: I used my old fiberglass box (with old insulation) and added more new insulation before putting it in a better spot. I did this as a fiberglass box is needed as fridge bottoms can take a beating. Also you should put a drain in the bottom so you can clean it out as well as letting melted ice water escape.... just my 2 cents. I look forward to all your videos. Keep them coming! 🐬

Hi Mads, it's funny that you are building that fridge because I have just built one with the exact same unit from Isotherm in the last few weeks, I took the idea from your last fridge build in Obelix. I'm not sure if this will help you but I didn't bother putting a drain hole in the bottom, however I only use the boat on weekends so I dont get any build ups of water. The fridge is approx 80 litres, I mounted the evaporator towards the top of the box in the hope for better efficiency and vertical. It works great actually, inside the evaporator it does freeze well when you turn the thermostat above 5 or 6. I have actually made a small video series on building it but haven't had the time to edit it yet and it's nowhere near to the quality of your productions. I'm heading down to the boat tomorrow, I might send a pic incase you are interested in how the build is, sorry for the long post, cheers

Hi Mads. I voted vertical. Assuming you are not going to use the evaporator compartment as an icebox (not sure if it is designed to work as one or not), and also assuming that it is open at the top and the bottom and not sealed at one end, then it will be more efficient (ie. use less electricity for the same quantity of cooling) and more effective (will cool to the required temperature faster) if it is installed vertically. This is because the cool air will fall out the bottom, creating a air circulation current where the coldest air contacts the food sooner, and the warmest air is brought into contact with the evaporator. I work as an energy engineer and figure out stuff like this on a regular basis so hopefully this is helpful.

Hi Sailing life. Great videos and i like your optimism. Did you consider a fridge drain? perhaps you should. There will be some condensation that will make the fridge interior wet. On the other hand, a small hole in the bottom of the fridge will allow all the cold air to drain out and make your bilge nice and cool. Perhaps a drain with a plug. Keep having fun, warm breezes and sunny days.

Hi Mads, did you consider a drain plug for defrosting and flushing and cleaning your fridge? Then there's the question of accessing the base of the fridge once the stove is in situ to deal with the waste fluids from the drain... I love how you explain the logic of your planning and decision making! Great project management skills. I'm a big procrastinator! Loads of ideas but little progress! However, I'm not a live-aboard (my boat is only 22 feet with seated headroom and is a trailer sailer) so I guess it's not that much of an issue for me... On top of your hard work on the boat you then put in extra time making these videos. Thanks for taking us along for the ride. ⛵️

Food for thought on your moisture problem. Have you considered drilling 4 or 5 evenly spaced holes, about 3 inches in diameter, at the bottom of the keel and opening your deck covers inside the cabin, place two radiant heaters inside? This will allow the evaporation process.. cool air coming up, warm air inside.. kind of like a miniature Coriolis effect. Should speed up the drying process. Then just do the cold patches on the keel when finished. It's commonly used in aviation. Both sciences have very similar aspects. I think you could dry your hull and keel this way in about a week maybe two. Just a thought.
@davef18528 жыл бұрын
Mads, my own boat has the evaporator in the freezer mounted vertically, with a starboard (plastic) shelf closing off the bottom to make the coldest section. It makes ice cubes just fine. Mine has a low point drain with a hose to rhe bilge and a stopper to prevent cold leakage. The drain hose gies to the bilge so I stick it into a small jug and empty after defrosting or spilling something. That foam you used looked soft, so I assume you are going to glass it over to avoid damage to the insulation? I accidentally dropped a bottle of beer in mine and it hit another bottle and exploded, tiny glass splinters all through the fridge. The fiberglass interior was easy to clean.
@ismzaxxon8 жыл бұрын
since us EEs are sailing. Here is a tip for you which I am guessing you have not thought of yet. The feezer plate is vertical and you may want ice cubes for drinks later. get some small zip seal plastic bags, about3cm x 5cm. Big I know. Anyway, fil them with water and drop them into your vertical ice compartment. No spils and will save on power as the thermal energy will be stored on the ice and released while power is off. one cube last a whole drink rather than a few small ones.
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
And turn the evaporator into kind of a holding plate. Awesome idea :)

You're doing a good job! I was planning on installing a compressor in my cooling box, and learned that there's also L-shaped evaporators, which should fit better your fridge. With O-shaped evaporators, you're wasting some precious space... Anyway, keep working hard, I'm nervous to see you sailing again!

Hi Mads, great video ones again! Please note that the evaporator also serves as a (sort of) freezing compartment. So you'll probably want to have access to that (which is not the case if I interpret your vertical set up in your video correctly. But maybe you've accounted for that.

Hi Mads! I've been looking forward to watching this video for a while as I need to build a fridge for my boat as well. I vote vertical placement of the evaporator with a shelve underneath so you can place ice cube bags and they stay inside the evaporator. Mount the evaporator as high as possible and drill as many holes in the shelve as possible so air can circulate through the evaporator. A mesh would work as well. I am concerned about the box thickness though. Do you know what the R-value for those panels is? If I got it right, you said the panels are 5cm thick which sounds very thin. Don Casey recommends 10 to 15cm thick panels for the insulation of the box in order to keep the fridge as energy efficient as possible. Thin panels will result in the compressor running more often and using more power which may be a problem when not connected to shore power. Take care.

Good work accomplished. It's always slow but looks good in the end. One thing in the fridge, how about running a bead of some type of material all around the bottom where the panels meet around the bottom that should keep out any debris or water from getting in between the joints down there when cleaning or defrosting the unit.
@peterengel78858 жыл бұрын
They have plastic welding which would be ideal for your ice box. There would be no chance that water could escape from the ice box. It also would prevent any water getting into the foam which was a problem with the old box.

Hi! I just recalled a fellow sailor friend who had a similar high humidity level (but no delamination), and he solved it with the help of methyl hydrate: he frequently washed the hull with this alcaloide and left a lot resting in the bildge until it all evaporated. Maybe this technique could work for you. Methyl hydrate is cheap (at leat here), and it is environmently safe, and does not damage the substrate. Good job with the dust, by the way ;-).
@w0560075688 жыл бұрын
I also agree with others to make an allowance for a drainage plug in the bottom of the fridge as I assume you will have to defrost it yourself unless your really cunning and can arrange some sort of catchment device and drain tube to bring the thawed ice water outside the main body of the fridge to be disposed of. I assume that the lid to the fridge stands on top of the "walls" of the Fridge? If so, are you going to protect the exposed insulation on these walls and the edges of the lid -eg with glued on pieces of thin laminate such as Formica? When your sanding like that in a small space under the polythene could you perhaps employ a small vacuum cleaner whilst you are sanding to filter out some of the dust? Perhaps any filter would become clogged with fine dust too quickly to be useful!
@LeadFoot5008 жыл бұрын

Ohh the dust! Keep a vacuum cleaner hose underneath the Plastic foil to create a slight vacuum. It sucks a bit to have the foil cling (don't seal to tightly) but not as much as cleaning up the dust in the entire boat. Learned that while sanding my bilge. I'm curious, what does Jökull do while you're not home? You should live stream Jökullcam while you're away some day! Edit: Also I would probably try something a bit radical if I scratch-built a fridge. I would mount it low. That way there would be a temperature gradient inside the box, but that would be an advantage if I only had one cold box onboard. You could have a tub of ice cream on the bottom of the box, and there's a place at the top for beer and butter, is my thinking.

Hey Mads, another great video. Thank you for including the cost of the insulation. I find the videos so much more informative when the cost is provided. I have a question. Is that light shinning through the hull of the boat behind the fridge and sink area? It is so much clearer after you sanded. If it is light showing through the hull, is that normal? I thought hulls would be thicker than that an prevent light from shining through. If the hull is that thin it sure would be easy to knock a hole in it. Wow scary!

You can always put water in there or something to take up space, but for cruising a big fridge would be nice. I would have used the entire space. Of course that would have meant more cost, but its worth it imho. 60 liters is like a cooler. Good for picnics and camping not living aboard. Just my opinion though... and depends where you cruise.

There was no gelcoat on the hull :) That had been removed 8-9 years ago but there was a barrier coat on there :) I used a belt sander. Check out this playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnnbmo2sqcx8oK8

What if you attach the evaporator to the lid of the fridge? Would that work? Might be too much stress on hoses I guess.

Cool idea :) But I think you're correct about it being too much stress on the copper tube.

Madds, do you have to take into consideration how the wood will swell up against each other when you plug a hole like the one in your bulkhead? Also, how do you determine the height for the cold plate in the fringe? Is it in the instructions?
@Fuhugawagah8 жыл бұрын
im guessing the marine plywood he's using doesnt swell much?
@SailLife8 жыл бұрын
Plywood that is WBP glued will not distort enough that it will be a concern :) Determine the height for the cold plate? :) I haven't read the instructions yet but I'll take a look the next time I'm aboard Athena.

@alemon I'm actually not using marine plywood. A good quality exterior plywood that is WBP glued is perfectly fine for what I'm doing (non-structural work). I'll go into a bit more detail in the next video :)

Where is the light coming from where the fridge is going? Is that The Sun showing through the hull? I didn't see another light source. I was thinking if that is sunlight showing through the hull isn't the hull way too thin? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't know much about sail boats. :)

I thank you for your videos, I enjoy the DIY stuff....I was just wondering, are you not getting out of practice with sailing, we never see you take Athena out for a shakedown. ..??

You're more than welcome :) Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment :) Hehe, I often mess up the names so don't worry about that ;) I've got a big trip planned next year until then I'll have to make do with a few short trips. Sailing is like riding a bike ;)
