My point is a real IT person would have made a serious attempt and given how she almost got away with it a real attempt to hide it could have, although I hope this is a lesson the navy takes serious and scans for suspicious signals on their ships.)

@jamesellis701 the Navy Times stories don't indicate that she was the initial instigator, and until the USN report is released I doubt we'd ever know. It appears she administered the account and managed the money, but that's just routine "we're sharing, who wants to be the account holder?" stuff. Her being front and center in what is known, however, isn't flattering, though she could be taking the brunt of it for the other chiefs, who were doubtless also disciplined, though how and to what degree is not yet known. Here's the thing: the _ENTIRE_ compliment of chiefs on this vessel were complicit if not wholly involved. Team effort, making all of them dangerous idiots. Putting that antenna out and lit is as good as putting a marker light on the ship. Even though the antenna is highly directional (through software) it is nevertheless lit to the outside. Then the onboard unauthorized WiFi routers simply added more unmanaged radios on the vessel. Anyone involved in that project compromised the vessel's security, nevermind regs and whatever else, plus lying to the captain. She's the face, but she wasn't alone. I'm less worried about her alone, and way tf more worried that the whole collection of chiefs, the "adults on the ship", were all in on it. WTAF with that?

Ok, AC.. let me esplain this one.. as a retired spook Sailor, let me start by saying the only reason this happened was because it was on a LCS. If this had been ANY other ship class, this would have been stopped and crushed immediately. No ship's skipper is going to authorize a privately owned and operated Starlink or Wifi system onboard. That would constitute an alteration to the ship which has to go through several layers of bureaucracy to get approved as a TEMPALT to the ship. Personally owned devices like this circumvent certain information and emission control measures that the ship needs to leverage at various times during normal operations and therefore represent a significant violation of US Navy regulations. Former Navy here to translate the nautical terminology for you land lubbers. The "05 Weather deck" is the 5th floor of the superstructure above the main deck of the ship. Weather deck is what the name implies, part of the ship exposed to the weather. The "floors" of a ship are divided into two sections, decks and levels. Decks are inside the body of the ship, with the upper most complete deck running the full length of the ship (picture where the guns of a battleship are located, that) being Deck 1. Below that is Deck 2, below that Deck 3 and so on until you reach the bottom. Meanwhile if you are on Deck 1 and you go into the superstructure extending above it (such as the command tower), that is Level 01, then Level 02 above that, and 03 above that. So this dish was planted on the 05 level aboard the ship, somewhere on the outside portion of it.
@nutcrackit73962 ай бұрын
Here I thought the "weather deck" was where the ship would monitor the weather because why wouldn't a modern combat ship keep track of the weather around them?
@VegetaLF72 ай бұрын
@@nutcrackit7396 Nope, literally just any part of the ship that is exposed to the weather. Sponsons (the little balconies on the side of ships), the main deck of most ships, the hangar and flight decks of carriers, etc. Anything that can qualify as "outside" on a ship.

This is typical behavior through out the Navy at all levels. I spent 3 1/2 years in the Navy in the early 90's and if you were not one of the upper enlisted, or mid to upper level officers, you are fodder. If someone needed a scape goat they would just pick one. Or make shit up to cause a small problem to escalate in importance until you got Captain's mast. They preach integrity, tradition, and honor, but they do NOT live it. Remember the USS Iowa explosion, and the scapegoating of Clayton Hartwig? This happens all of the time in the Navy, at all levels, and for anything from a low cost small dollar item loss, to things like the Iowa explosion. Thankfully there was a second investigation that cleared that sailor's name. ZERO integrity. I served in the Army some years later (post 9/11) and was pleasantly surprised to see that Honor, Integrity, Tradition, Honesty, Loyalty, etc were not only preached, but expected, rewarded, and observed at all levels. At no time in the Army did I ever feel that I couldn't go to one of my NCO's if I had screwed up and get any issue that I had resolved at the lowest level.

What if i told ya we "DoD" run NIPR & SIPR thru dirty net using wifi pucks, LTE hotspots, and.... Starlink. The issue with this isnt an unsecured anything. I will say the only credible threat is that we do not control the systems that monitor the ground terminals and the LEO sats. Since it is not DoD contracted we don't have all of the people in there with oversight. Elon Musk could (not saying would, but i don't trust him anyway) could live stream all of the terminal locations where ever they are to adversaries. Obv there is risk of the devices including the starlink hardware to get hacked and some sort of information extracted, but by default, there isn't anymore risk than any other time someone uses morale internet services. Basically i say all that to say the signal coming out of the dish and hitting the fast moving satellite doesn't have a (wifi is here) signal. IF someone is close enough to scan for or intercept that signal, they would also detect the various other bands that are going in and out. Edited word puck

@ralphpiper2644 Musk already did that in 2023. Not exactly that, but similar enough.

The answer to why that person only was reduced in rank by one is because the loss specifically states that if they want to take more it has to go to Official Court, Marshall if you're over the rank of E4 they can only take one rank at a time with non-judicial punishment

I am a bit surprised it did not go to an official court marshal. Well one would hope they have her sealing and then opening the same envelops all day every day until she retires.

She, as the Command Chief of the boat, *led* a months long conspiracy to hazard the ship and *lie* to the commanding officer. Her actions additionally hazarded *other* ships in the US Navy, because continuous position tracking of her ship on routine deployment gives away operating procedures that make it easier for an adversary to predict where *other* ships on similar deployments are likely to be and when. She coerced a senior officer into ignoring HIS duty, so as to keep thr conspiracy from the Captain (meaning she was instigating a *mutiny* ). She betrayed both her chain of command above her, *and* the sailors below her, for her own personal benefit. She should have been given a GCM and a BCD or DD, after reduction to E1.

She should have got 5 years in prison and a dishonorable discharge.

He was not handing them out for free, he offered a free month of service if people had the starlink kit already. People need to stop giving this man credit for things he never did.
