I'm definitely getting the mint first, even if it isn't limited. Mint has always been my favorite color, so I'm ecstatic that it's in fashion now in tech and stationery and everything else. I know color trends aren't forever, so I'm hoarding all the mint things I can while it lasts! Also, I have the same callus on my middle finger, but I'm left-handed, so it's on my left hand. Another reason I'm super excited for this pen is that adjustable grip because using fountain pens witn any kind of grip is definitely geared towards tne right-handed. One pen came out a couple years ago that was alllegedly made with a universal grip, but it didn't work. It took me forever to explain that the wavy grips had *aren't* usable for left handers too (which is a feature that was part of its marketing) as the waves curved *against* your fingers in the left hand, completely negating the purpose. Ouch! I forget which company made it, but it was aggravating that they didn't seem to actually do any research on left handed people, just assumed their niche design would work. Finally witn this pen someone actually understood we need a completely adjustable grip that we can practically flip 180 to comfortably use the nib at an angle that doesn't just scratch paper and wear it down. I'm BEYOND excited!
@InkyRocks7 ай бұрын
The mint is a beautiful color and I hesitated when I bought the blue! That is interesting about the left handed aspect. I need to ask around about that.

I got my first Sailor pen last month and decided to try the Compass first, because I heard mixed opinions on their feedback. I can’t stop writing with it! I suddenly can’t stand my super smooth (despite being a fine) Lamy 2000 anymore! I need MORE SAILOR FEEDBACK! On Tomoe River, if feels and sounds like running your fingernail along the wall of a tent. The most pleasant thing ever. Needless to say, I am in the market for a ProGear (Slim) now.

@InkyRocks7 ай бұрын
I think when you first start with fountain pens, the smoothness really gets your attention. But the way different nibs write is what keeps my attention. Sometimes I want a soft nib and sometimes a nail, sometimes a smooth writer and sometimes one with feedback. Though I do feel my handwriting is much better with some feedback. I like your "running your fingernail along the wall of a tent" line--apt!

How does it write in reverse? Assumingit writes narrower, and the section can be adjusted in less than a minute, it might be handy to have the triangle grip nicely adjusted for reverse writing. I've been doing some drawing in reverse with a triangle section pen, and it is quite awkward to grip.
@InkyRocks7 ай бұрын
Ugh! I always forget something in a review hahaha! I just now tried it with the medium wet ink I have in it. It is surprisingly smooth! If the line width is narrower, it's only a bit narrower. It may be a function of the ink in it. It has slightly more feedback. The section can definitely be adjusted in under a minute.

I just got into fountain pens last year and my first pen, which I actually got 10 years ago, was a Lamy Safari which left a bad taste in my mouth because I had trouble getting ink out because my hand leans back, a bit to the side. A few months ago, I found a small blurb on their website where they say to compensate this, you can get their oblique nib (pricey), or of course you can always find someone to grind the nib for you… but I thought this was quite a frustrating workaround, all I wanted was to be able to twist the nib a few degrees. It was the budget Platinum Preppy that reignited my interest in fountain pens, but I prayed to the fountain pen gods for a triangular grip that can be adjusted. A few weeks later I heard the news that Sailor has already jumped on this request! I tried one in store and it was a bit pricey, the standard colours were a bit blah… but I did not see this beautiful blue one you have shown here… makes me want to run back to the store and pick it up after all.
@InkyRocks4 ай бұрын
Hahaha! Sorry to be an enabler! I pull with my thumb and angle my nib to the left and the fix for that is supposed to be an oblique. Obliques just don’t work for me-I feel like there is too little of a sweet spot. I just occasionally adjust the nib to be back to flat (to the paper) and carry on. Lamys sometimes dry out too fast (their sealing system is funky-though it’s a lovely nib). You may just try a wetter nibbed pen and it will be more forgiving.
@estycki4 ай бұрын
@@InkyRocks yes yes yes I pull with my thumb (or really my entire arm + shoulder, but the thumb is like the hook). I call it the land-and-pull. I used ballpoint pens all through high school and by doing it this way I never had hand cramps. However ballpoint pens are typically held perpendicular to the page while fountain pens are at an angle, so I started out perplexed how to adjust with Lamy's triangular grip.
@InkyRocks4 ай бұрын
@@estycki Some people hold their fountain pen pretty perpendicular to the paper (Snowy Studio has gorgeous handwriting and she does), and some people (like me) hold a ball point/roller ball at an angle. You don't have to have a triangular grip on your pen--I sometimes find them limiting. I still think your best bet would be an inexpensive round tipped nib (not an oblique or stub etc) that is about a medium or larger, with a wet flow. But if the Tuzu works for you, then that would be the best bet. Good luck on your search--in fountain pens, it's sometimes the process that is fun, more so than the end 💕

Thank you for a great review. I’ve been eyeing that pen since I first saw it for my son who is into pen and ink, watercolor sketching. It seem to me that it would be very convenient to use the SAILOR black.Kiwaguro pigment Ink for traveling as it comes in proprietary cartridges. Perhaps in a medium or a broad. I’m not sure if I would want to put a pigment ink in piston pen for traveling. it seems it could present a difficult cleanup. I suspect you could dedicate one pen for that, but you may still not want to leave it in the pen for a long time which I tend to do! Any advice?
@InkyRocks7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I reserve certain pens for black pigment ink because you never can seem to get them really clean, and pistons are harder to t clean than a CC. So I'm probably with you there.

Nice review. I have a 1911L demonstrator so I know how pleasurable Sailor pens can be to look at and write with. As a westerner living in Japan can you comment on how the Japanese generally view the Pilot vs Sailor sensibility? Who are the ones in Japan favoring each brand? Thank you.
@InkyRocks7 ай бұрын
Thank you! I really can't say about the Pilot vs Sailor. It's kind of like asking what is the most popular fountain pen in the US. I do know that Pilot is the bigger company as they do a lot of other pens (gel, ballpoint, stationery etc).

Moving is always such a chore, and I can just imagine trying to plan an international move with many bottles of ink. Phew! I will miss your video tours of Japan, but I trust you'll continue to bring us your usual distinctive content. Was that a medium nib you showed us on the Tuzu? I'm tempted to try one with a broad nib. Ever since I broke my wrist and lost some range of motion in my fingers, I haven't been able to use triangular grips without pain in the base of my thumb, but I'm guessing that the ability to rotate the grip might relieve that problem. Wishing you a smooth move and joyful retirement!

Nasty Lamy. Whether it's a cheap knock off or an upgrade doesn't matter for me, those nibs are ugly and the triangle sections are bad no matter how adjustable. They're fine for people who pinch hard and write ugly scrawl with only their finger muscles. The material is surprisingly nice despite being translucent but overall looks like a toothbrush case or some cheap appliance. Nice to see the written material is finally in decent English at least. Comes shortly after Sony ended exclusivity for their games, so I wonder if Japanese corporate culture is finally being less closed-minded.
