Sailplane - Umphrey's McGee 3-27-2003 and 3-28-2003, Gothic Denver and Aggie Fort Collins, Colorado
Full flight recorded with the GoPro Max 360 camera mounted in the cockpit.
Gregg Davis in the front seat, Tom Zoellner in the back, as my mentor, helping me to learn to fly cross-country safely in the sailplane.
We are flying on May 17, 2022 in Salida Colorado - KANK Airport.
We get towed up to around 200 feet over the ground, and release to find rising air to circle in. We are seeking the thermals that form bubbles and columns of rising air, so that we can glide out through the environment at a 50:1 glide ratio approximately.
The DG505 two=place glider doesn't have an engine or propeller, it's a pure glider, and for every 5000 feet in altitude gain, we can travel about 50 miles in a straight line.
On this flight we went down the Wet Valley to the east of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, down to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, then in over the peaks, back east to Canon City, and back north past Salida almost to Buena Vista, then back to land at Salida, after 4 hours.
