I just want to say a MASSIVE Thank you for this detailed tutorial. I am a DIY upholsterer, and I am now actually working on a recliner chair. My handy hubby helpen me take out the mechanism, and I am taking it slowly, bit by bit, as is advised in this video. The biggest tip I benefit from, is to cut the fabric (template) in half length-wise, so you can use one side to take apart and use as templates for the new fabric, and the other half you leave in-tact, so you can refer back to how it was put together. That is invaluable information that I am using now to make sure I can put all the pieces back together again. Thank you!!!!!

I've always said: being able to reupholster furniture yourself is a huge advantage; not only can we do it when absolutely necessary, but we can constantly change the style of furniture without having to pay someone else for the work. We currently have at home a Togo chair from Manhattan Home Design, and while I know I won't need to reupholster it for a while, I'd like to learn how to do it with that particular model, since it's so different from the rest of the modern accent chairs. Thank you very much for sharing this tutorial.

I was able to pick up a matching set of recliners..of course they were covered in pleather and it had pealed really bad...The woman paid almost $1500 for them less than a year ago. Goes to say the fabric warranty was null and void. So now for $50 and an hour drive I have really horrible looking nice chairs. I am going to attempt to reupholster them..I hope it works out for the best haha

A very interesting video. I am thinking of have my two GPlan (in the UK) reclining sofas reupholstered so now I understand how complex it will be and that the high price they will no doubt quote me will be entirely justified! A lot of skill and patience required. My dilemma now is whether to recycle (reupholster) or buy new.

I have a reclining chair I bought from Sears Canada in 2000. It is such a comfortable chairand I really love it. Of course the upholstery is shot. I have watched your very interestingvideo, but I'll be honest. It would probably take me six months to complete my whole chair.I'm not very experienced with sewing either. I know a year or so ago I phoned a couple ofupholstery shops to get quotes on getting the chair done. I was quoted $1000.00. I paid$600.00 for my chair and Sears still sells them for $1500.00 now. What would you suggest I do? Buy another chair or pay a professional to reupholster this one. I shouldalso mention here that the chair itself is in excellent condition. The mechanism works,the arms are tight.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 7 жыл бұрын
You will often find that the older chairs are built better than the brand new ones. If you can't DIY (do it yourself) saving you the most money, then the option of having it reupholstered by a company and still saving you money over the new chair, may be the best option. The fact that you can pick your own decorative fabric is another plus.

This might sound like madness, but I have a perfectly solid dual reclining loveseat I'm thinking about reupholstering. I can't find a slipcover that is for this type of loveseat, and throwing a cover over it just isn't working. Am I nuts or just break down and get a new one? 25 years ago I made slip overs for my living room using newspaper for patterns. Just wondering.
@SailriteDIY

Slip covers do not work well, in my opinion, for recliners. However, if you don't want to buy a new one or recover the old one they are an option.

Excellent tutorial! One question: how do you know when to use the cardboard tack strip (as opposed to just stapling directly on the fabric)?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 9 жыл бұрын
+Donna M. Schmid Thanks! Anytime the fabric is stapled and folded over itself (making a folded edge) use the cardboard tack strip so the fabric folds nicely along that folded edge. Also if piping is stapled along an edge of the wood frame using the cardboard tack strip will help push the piping towards the outer edge keeping it standing proud.

@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 жыл бұрын
It depends, but typically it will take a whole day for an upholstery shop to finish a chair like this. So, they may charge about $500 or so.
@davidbostock6776
@davidbostock6776 5 жыл бұрын
$500. May be well worth it, even on a chair that sells for less new. I bought a recliner on Amazon, I am happy with it's structure and built in massage feature. Issues I have with it are difficult to push back foot support to latch, this may be due to incorrect location of spring s, looks like easy and adjustable fix but I have not tried yet. There is a hook type tool for drum brakes that would be handy to change where springs go. This chair also rocks and swivels in addition to vibrate and recline. Some numb nut threaded the power supply wire through the swivel bearing, very difficult and messy to get it out of that bearing that would have eventually broken that wire, bearing had black molybdenum grease. Big nasty issues with the chair are it's now collapsed foam in the backrest and tiny vinyl flake Chips leaving thin ugly backrest fabric bare, in less than two years! The sailrite fabric may be the best way to go. I may try a polyurethane coated nylon myself, it would be a high priority if I didn't have so many put off things to finish.
