I'm a retired custom upholster, and I never knew this. I stitched virtually every job using the standard upholstery needles that came with my machine. This explains many of the things I noticed about using the needles I worked with when stitching custom leather jobs.

Good video and nice information on needles. The steppage adjustment on your presser foot is badly out of adjustment. I see these things and I want to fix them so badly!
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! We specifically set the walk that way since we just finished a project where we needed the large walk to get over a thick transition of material and didn't want the foot to get caught. We forgot to set it back, thanks for catching it!
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailriteWorkbench It wouldn't be a problem if just the steppage was set to max. What I noticed is the feet don't lift evenly. We should be getting about the same lift on the inner vibrating presser foot as the outer foot. That's what's out of adjustment on your machine. Best
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheThoughtfulWoodworker Setting it this way is necessary to achieve the maximum thickness transition (no short stitches from getting caught on material). If both feet were set evenly (between center walking foot and outer presser foot) it would not be able to step up or down as tall a transition as when just the outer presser foot is set to its max height. Think of the foot walk as a 12" ruler that needs to be divided between the two feet. When the feet are set evenly, each foot will lift 6" which makes the max thickness transition you can sew 6" (no, the machine will not actually sew something 6" thick). Alternatively, when you set the outside presser foot to 10" and the center walking foot to 2" you can now step up to 10" instead of 6". You are correct though, the walk motion will much smoother when the feet are set equally and it is the recommended practice to set them even.
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailriteWorkbench I don't think it actually improves the thickness you can handle, since one foot lifts higher and the other foot stays very low. At least that's been my experience. Your settings were obviously intentional, and that's all I was concerned with. Cheers.

What would you recommendation be for sewing a button back onto a lambskin leather jacket?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question! It depends if you're sewing the button by hand or with a machine. If you're sewing the button back onto a lambskin leather jacket by hand, you'll need a hand-sewing needle. You can find one using this link: sailrite.com/Assorted-Hand-Sewing-Leather-Needles-5-pack. If you use a machine, a round/sharp point needle would work well for your needs. However, the needle type would only matter slightly because the stitches won't be visible. Hope this helps, and happy sewing!

How do you define, short, medium, long stitches? And what needle description would be identical to PFX134LR in diamond head?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench Жыл бұрын
Hi! I assume you're referring to what was said 2:06. I'd say anything shorter than 4mm runs the risk of the stitch holes being too close. Especially for the DI Leather Needles. But the best course of action is to test out various stitch lengths on scrap leather to test the performance of the seam and that the holes are not too close. Leatherwork can be a trial-and-error process and varies greatly from leather crafter to leather crafter based on personal preference and the look they're going for. As for you second question we are sorry, but we are unfamiliar with that needle system as it's not a system compatible with our machines. But if you wanted to look, you could try PFx134DI or PFx134DIA, but not PFx134D needles...those are triangular point. The best advice would probably be to buy directly from your machine manufacturer so you are guaranteed the needles will work.

Another very informative video. Can you guys get 135x16/17 22-24 lr needles? Does anybody even make them? The 21 tri point I bought from you guys works pretty well with 138, but the 135x16 19 lr of course can't handle 138. I want that pattern, but with thicker thread. Should I just use perpendicular 22 needles. Do they make 24 P needles? My machine is supposed to be able to go up to 277 although I haven't tried it yet.

Is there a method that does not burst the back of the leather while sewing? Can we handle this with needle selection?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench 6 ай бұрын
Are you using leather needles and still bursting the back side of the leather? Leather point needles are designed to cut through the leather and avoid that. If you are using fabric needles that could be the issue. If you are using leather needles and still having that problem, you could be using too large of a needle. I usually recommend diamond leather point needles. Our most recent video on the channel goes into more detail if you want to check that out!

@@SailriteWorkbench What should I do to make the back stitch look as beautiful as the front stitch? Do you think machine stitching is needle welded or thread welded?
@SailriteWorkbench
@SailriteWorkbench 6 ай бұрын
Your best bet is to make sure you are using the right size needle and thread, use a leather point needle to make clean holes, and fine-tune your tension to make sure the knot is hidden in the middle of the leather. The back side of the stitch will never look quite as perfect as the top side, but if your machine is properly set up, you can still get great results. As they’ve already mentioned, the answer is to use presser feet/feed dogs that are designed specifically for leather. If your machine doesn’t have those available, you can buy a new set of standard presser feet and feed dogs for your machine and file down the ridges to make them smooth. Then, of course, turn down the presser foot pressure to the lightest you can manage without it causing issues for feeding the leather through.

Thanks for the fast reply. I didn't know that this foot existed -or these needles. These videos are so helpful. I don't think this foot came with our deluxe machine but I'll have to check as there are a few things we haven't even unwrapped since it came with so many extras and attachments. Even so, I have been super impressed with the way the stitching came out on the couple of leather projects I tried even though it was quite thick leather. I will have to look into these needles and the foot the next time I need to sew a leather item.

With a leather needle, the best thing to do is look at the tip. Does it look blunted compared to a new needle? Alternatively, if you start having difficulty tensioning the thread or the thread is shredding it is likely the needle is dull.
