Good effort on the tack, and in very light winds you might attempt this, although in reality in light airs you would simply wear ship if the winds are too light to tack. I have used techniques like this when becalmed and a breeze has come up leaving us in an unfavorable sail configuration to the new wind condition and our desired heading and you need to be creative with the sails and very little head way to get the vessel back on course. In reality though, for a brig (which I would argue this is not because it is carrying a mainsail not a spanker (a brig has a square sail as the largest sheet of canvas)). To tack a brig in real life, simply turn the wheel (helms a lee), back the head sails and foresquares as she goes into irons until the head passes a point or two through the wind, tack the mainsquares at that point provide forward momentum when the wind comes far enough aft, followed by the foresquares and finally the headsails. The Mainsail or spanker can be sheeting midships before the entire maneuver, but this is not to add windward drive, it is to stop the boom and gaff from flogging too much whilst in irons, especially if there is a sea running. But also keep in mind you would only tack up to a certain wind velocity otherwise you would risk too much forward pressure on the backed squares and potential dismasting. 90% of the time we wore ship. On point of sail, I have tacked back and forth on a square rigger for days and not made a single mile to windward. A decent rig can sail with the wind maybe 2 points forward of the beam, but you lose it all to leeway especially with any kind of sea running. The only thing you can do is play the wind shifts and ultimately wait for one big enough. These boats are not designed to sail to windward full-stop. (I am one of the last who have sailed square-rigged ships professionally around the world for a number of years :) )

6:38 Sort of. You seem to know your stuff about this so you quite possibly already know and just didn't explain in full for the sake of the video but for anyone interested, braces connect to the *yard arms* (the ends of the *yards,* the wooden poles running horizontally to the mast) and the sheets connect to the bottom corners of the sail themselves (said corners also confusingly called sheets). On most sails, the sheets then go on to attach to the lower yard arms, but on the *courses* (the lowest sail on each mast), the sheets run straight down to the *gunwhale* (the railing on the side of the deck). The current version of the brig as I write this has it correct, but the one in this video has a yard attached to the bottom of the courses, which is not accurate. Typically, the sails would be *trimmed* (turned) using the braces and the course sheets, but in sailwind, there is only the sheets (or braces in this video's version) to the courses, with no separate braces to the topsails, which I guess is so that the game can be played with only one player as you can't use multiple winches at once.

I think turning the sails on the fore-mast when she is going backwards would make the tack quicker. During the wear, the fore-sails are slowing the ship. I would let off their braces, so they can turn freely and luff throughout the turn. The brig should have the best windward performance (in terms of angle) on the spinnaker and jib only, since the the mainsails can't turn far enough to provide forward thrust. You would have to generate a speed-polar to see if sailing this way would increase the Velocity-made-good to windward though.
@Deadmode3 жыл бұрын
I’ll admit that I have never been a crew on a tall ship, but the techniques shown here are taken from reliable sources. During the tack, when the vessel is making way astern, the foremast sails are causing the bow to be blown downwind and thus turning the ship. In the real world, the rudder would have minimal effect so this reliance on the sails to turn is important. During the wear, the foremast sails are kept hauled for longer only due to the fact that, in Sailwind, I cannot helm the vessel whilst also letting go the braces. In the real world, as the new tack is achieved and the mainmast topsail and course are filling, the crew would be letting the foremast go and hauling the braces on the new tack. So yes, the foremast sails do slow the ship momentarily but that is a limitation of a single-player handling of the vessel in a game. In the real world, a square rigged ship would definitely use the squares for sailing to windward. Whilst not able to point as high as a fore-aft rigged ship, they still make great way to windward. Since this video, the brig has been massively improved and can actually sail at around 45° or less to the wind and with good headway. I haven’t played Sailwind in a couple of weeks since the addition of the logline, but I’ll have to jump on at some point to test her speed under spanker and headsail alone versus under full sail.
@erumaaro60603 жыл бұрын
@@Deadmode Yeah, I just watched the tacking maneuver again, and I think you turned the foremast as soon as it made sense. I'm only book smart myself, and I've played the game for just a few days, so I haven't had the opportunity to tack or wear the brig with full sails, since i prefer sailing her closer to the wind and without mainsails. I am looking forward to your speed test.
@brandonleasure12343 жыл бұрын
@@Deadmode Is having the headsail not pulled close during the tack historical? I would imagine the fore-aft headsail pulled close would help pull you through the tack but maybe I'm missing something.
@MinSredMash2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the game is unrealistic, but this is not how you are supposed to tack a brig. The yards on BOTH masts should be parallel until the bow is pointed almost into the wind. Then you swivel the mainmast yards onto the new tack. You should also douse the "spanker" (as you call it) when falling off onto the new tack.
@Deadmode2 жыл бұрын
As I mention at the start, and in the title of the video, concessions are made because of the limitations of being in the game and only one crewman. This video was not intended as instruction on sailing a brig outside of the game of Sailwind, obviously. A large amount of the ‘holes’ in my knowledge were filled by this series of very well-explained videos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ21k5aKqNJlqMU The reason I diverge from such procedure and ‘prepare’ the main course across the beam ahead of time is because, in the game, I am one person, and the speed at which one can operate the vessel limits the ability to follow the procedures with absolute accuracy. As such, I have to bring the main square ahead of time to facilitate a quick haul on the new tack, which also allows time to adjust the helm when she makes way astern. You could keep both yards parallel but, in my opinion for Sailwind, it makes the rest of the manoeuvre too much of a rush.

I really want this game, but it doesn't look to be worth it just yet. There seems to be very little to do other than sail city to city dropping off cargo. The Dev's choice of non-combat is going to be a turnoff for many, for me it's a good thing, but it does dramatically reduce gameplay variety. The worst thing you can do for your game is make an unbreakable loop with your gameplay. In this case, it's pick up cargo, sail to city, drop off cargo, and then repeat. Just looking at it, once you get the challenge of sailing down to an art, you're more or less done with the game due to the lack of anything interesting to do outside of sailing.
@Deadmode3 жыл бұрын
I think you're just not seeing what it is about simulation games that appeal to people - the simulation. Most sim titles will largely give you a way of simulating something within a sandbox-style environment. Simulators step away from a typical game with typical gameplay loops and provides an environment for you to experience, experiment and play without the normal confines of a game. Take MSFS for example; other than flying, there's nothing to do. They've added in landing challenges or scenery tours but there's largely nothing to do except get in a variety of planes, come up with a route to fly and then go fly it. Sailwind, whilst still having many game-type aspects, is still a simulation at its core. The sailing mechanics are the primary focus and the cargo is just an excuse to get you to set sail. The fantasy setting and quasi-historical ship designs allow the developer artistic license with content going forward and for the players, a rarely done approach with sailing sims. But, if simulations are not for you, then that's fine, and only you can decide that.
