The Château de Saint-Cloud, on the western edge of Paris, has got everything you'd want from a French royal château: beautiful gardens, fountains, statues, and unbeatable views across the city. Everything except, erm, the Château itself. So what on earth happened to it? I went to Saint-Cloud to investigate...

@Ben Bristow 135€ fine mate! Been like that for a couple of months now. It does feel a bit ridiculous wearing a mask in places like this, but by this point I've pretty much got used to it and it's not worth taking it off and putting it on again all the time because you just end up contaminating the thing with whatever filth is on your fingers (which is quite a lot, in Paris). Also fwiw I usually wait for a quiet moment before I start filming, so there were a few people around, I just made it look like there weren't :)

Super picky technical point. The Pavillon de Breteuil is not international territory. It is still very much part of France. But like Embassies, Consulates and the Headquarters of UNESCO, the land and buildings are provided with functional privileges and immunities. Still French territory--France just does not apply her laws there.

Ah... I was debating whether to explain this in the video - I actually have a longer take where I say the exact words "I guess it's like an embassy" and babble on about it for a bit. I visited the royal park of Saint-Cloud some time ago and was hoping to find some remains of the palace, but alas. Never knew the cause of its destruction, I just assumed the Communards were to blame.

They were. They were the ones who shelled the palace. Plus, with their track record of destruction - Tuileries Palace, just to give the most infamous example - one can be excused for not putting any act of wonton destruction past them.

The company i work for manufactured the original Kilogram referance standard, held at the Bureau :)
@STARDRIVE

Thanks for sharing, but the kilogram has always bothered me. KILO. The unit for length isn´t kilometer, nor is the unit for force micro-Newton. It´s an exception I´m not pleased with, yet so embedded that fixing it is just as awkward. I´m a metric person, but not because of the units themselves. I´m perfectly fine using inches and pounds, as long as we use the DECIMAL system. Hence, kilo-inches & centi-inches, or deci-pounds. The problem with the imperial system, is they use multiple units at the same time. Yards, inches, miles & feet all mixed up. It contradicts the definition of standard, if you ask me.

Nothing (cough) beats a Tim Traveller video hitting KZbin. It brightens the day. Tim, if you read these comments I want to thank you for a forthcoming trip to Germany. It includes many of the places you have produced films about and I wouldn't be going to them unless I had discovered this channel (I think at around the 30K subscribers mark). So thank you. We're really looking forward to going to Monchau, Mettlach, Volklingen, Wuppertel, etc etc. We owe you a pint. In the meantime keep the content coming please.

Lockdown and all the 2020 craziness have changed the way I enjoy your videos, because.. as a Parisian on one side I don't learn much anymore by watching them :-) but on the other side, I really realize and appreciate the work you are putting into them even more, and it's great to know that your viewers all around the world are learning about this. Should they come and visit Paris in the future, they may stray from the overcrowded classic tourist-y areas! Now everytime I go for a stroll in a park or through the Petite Ceinture, I somewhat expect to bump into you shooting a video :)

My grand parents used to live in Saint-Cloud, I've spend loooog boooooring afternoons there, including the ritual tour in the nearby parc, and I had never heard this piece of history before seeing your video... Thanks for sharing it, I guess I'll go back to Saint-Cloud with more pleasure now ! (and by the way, my grandfather was one of the director of the SNCF, and reading « La Vie du Rail », a newspaper for train enthusiasts was one of my distractions during those family afternoon... it seems that Train has a connection with everything !)

Tim, there is also an interesting site in Paris: the lost Palais des Tuileries. It was one of the main Royal residences in France and, technically speaking, it is the reason why the Louvre museum is so big. It is the missing link between the two main galleries, enclosuring the Carousel arch, separating it from the Tuileries garden. It was destroyed by fire at the same troubled period of the fall of Napoleon III (like St-Cloud).
