I heard this Saint Saens concerto for the first time in February 1967 in Carnegie Hall with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra. Andre Previn was supposed to conduct, but couldn't for some reason. Gennady Rozhdestvensky was the replacement. Also on the program were a concertino by Lukas Foss and the Dvorak Concerto, also a first for me. I was still a teenager. I remember David Dubinsky, the labor leader, was in the audience. In addition to the beauty of Saint-Saens' music, the HD quality of the video focuses one's attention also on visual details - which gave me the following thought. This was in Frankfurt, a city by now famous for its ethnic diversity. Good to see all those different ethnicities proportionately represented in the audience&orchestra, enjoying the city's cultural life. Oh wait, it's just the usual two (Europeans, East Asians). Oh well... I guess we do still have some affordable street food by way of a cultural contribution from some of those other well-represented ethnicities in Frankfurt, for whom there were better things to do that night than to come to the Alte Oper to listen to some shmancy classical music. We should all still thank them for *that* contribution.

I just noticed that subtle detail at 14:16, on the low C, he uses sympathetic vibrations to his advantage and adds a hint of vibrato to the sound through the 4th finger on the G string. Not quite sure on the specifics of the physics, but it definitely seems to work in varying the intensity of the note, even if it doesn't change the pitch as much as traditional vibrato.
