Protestant music in a catholic church. On the finest organ in France music from a German cantor from saxonia. Performed by a German speaking french organist from the Alsace, the French German European heartland. 5 minutes of music full of european atmosphere, perfection, emotion, culture and history. What a long, long way to go through the centuries. Thank you so much.

There is no such thing as 'protestant' music.

protestants have their own culture, so also their own hymns and interpretation, more Baroque, less Romantic than the catholics. The hymn books of prot. and cath. are very different.

Like the 'Praise to the Lord' background music to the intro. Catholics appreciate the Lutheran basis for much of Bach's music (and that of his contemporaries) whilst acknowledging that the theology may differ from ours in certain aspects. Bach raises the bar for both traditions by harmonising what might otherwise be bland or repetitively insistent melodies in his own magical fashion. The Schubler Chorales along with the Passions etc are a priceless treasure for world music. Daniel Roth is an incredible interpreter and without showmanship or fuss shows us the music. Brilliant!

I second that! When I have a pain flare-up, I listen to these recordings of Daniel Roth. Nobody plays Bach like him, or plays organ like him! I immerse in the music and the pain is gone in a few minutes. The effect lasts for hours. The fantastic tones of the St. Sulpice organ get part of the credit!

Thank you for posting this superb rendition of J.S. Bach's chorale prelude. Daniel Roth again proves conclusively that Bach's works are splendid when played on this basically unaltered since the time of Cavaile-Coll organ, which thank the Lord has escaped being ruined as were so many others of his instruments by the whims of organists who insisted that they could not play Bach and other Baroque and other such composers' works on Cavaille-Colls as he had designed them.

What fantastic footwork! What an amazing organist! Then we moved up to the casework, zoomed in to discover it is desperately in need of a good Vacuuming - a Clean!! What is the interior of this organ like? After the tragic event of that horrible fire at Notre Dame these wonderful Cathedrals should be tended with loving care - while they still exist!

BRAVO!!! Thanks for that WONDERFUL performance and for playing the chorale BEFORE you played the prelude. And especially THANK YOU for publishing the registration. It is MOST fascinating to see what one would use on an instrument such as the St. Sulpice C-C. So IT IS NOT a Marcussen, but the piece works very well on that C-C.

very interesting to listen to. Why? Because it so fantastic how Bach overlays the themes, each played by one hand an the feet. For instance, just trying to listen to the theme of the left hand and the feet, nice. And, amazingly all themes fit together in a perfect way. So as Mr Roth does play this piece not too fast (Mr Schweitzer would applaud to that...lol) it is possible to separate all themes when listening carefully, but on the other hand is possible to fit them together at each point in time. I just call it "superposition" of single themes. Don't know whether that is the correct description for it. All in all, very very nice. Thanks to all who made that recording possible. I enjoyed it very much.

+bubffm Really!! And why is that. It lacks keys, stops, couplers, pipes?
@PierreFrancoisDUBATTENTI8 жыл бұрын
+robert shaw Thank you bubffm for your kind comment, which also raises a highly crucial issue ! It however seems that Aristide Cavaillé-Coll did it best, especially in his biggest instruments so that Bach music (and more generally polyphonic music) can sound well and balanced. "On 22 September 1853, A. Cavaillé-Coll wrote the following to J.-N. Lemmens: "... the wind is with classical music; with Bach, you are going to be able to get the approval of the true connoisseurs. Bach's Toccata, as played by Alkan, worked wonders". Having been particularly impressed by the works of Bach as interpreted by J.-N. Lemmens, Cavaillé-Coll decided in 1850 to implement changes in the stoplists of his organs so that this music could be properly performed. He therefore kept the mixtures and mutations of the 18th-century organs he restored or rebuilt in such churches as Saint-Roch in Paris (1842), the Notre-Dame-de-l’Annonciation Cathedral in Nancy (1859), and the Saint-Louis Cathedral in Versailles (1861). However, the most stunning example of this remains the great organ of Saint-Sulpice". For further explanation, you can read The neoclassical organ and the great Aristide Cavaillé-Coll organ of Saint-Sulpice, Paris. +Pierre-Francois DUB-ATTENTI Many thanks tor your informative reply. It shows that CC was well aware of the porential limitations of the symphonic organ to polyphonic music and did his best to work around it whereever possible. Maitre Roth shows that it will work if you know the instrument as well as he does.
