Excellent video. Beautiful Colt Navy. And a lot of great information. I love my old Pietta version. But most practical? In its time, absolutely. But by modern standards, I think it has to bow to its great grandson, the 357 magnum DA/SA Revolver and its versatility. To be fair, its historic significance really can't be overstated. If we didn't have the 36 caliber colt revolver then, we probably wouldn't have had the 38 short colt, long colt. the 38 S&W. the 38 special, or the 357 magnum. You could even make a sound argument that it led to the 9x19mm cartridge. certainly the 380 acp, and maybe even the 9x18mm cartridge. There is no doubt that the 36 colt navy was foundational to an entire dynasty of cartridges.

Absolutely have to say in it’s time. And I don’t dispute that. The title was purposely ambiguous to make potential audiences curious. By modern standards, I’d wager a percussion weapon is in the bottom 10% for practicality. Hell, even his younger cartridge fed brother still in the bottom 25%. I also appreciate your knowledge on historic weapons, Douglas! Thank you for the information packed comment! I appreciate you stopping by!

Nice content! I think the coolest revolver of all time is remington new model army, in pair of course, however the colt 51 navy is the sexiest, no doubt, but in pair of course. I just spiked one of my engraved 1985 made pietta in 5 " version since stronger main spring and slickshot nipples just decreased the number of jams but not prevented it. Now it runs like a remington and finally it is fit for cowboy action matches! Keep up the good work and I wish You a happy new year! Greetings from Hungary where we have a tiny but strong western lover gunslinger community.

Great vid thanks! My fav cap and ball is the Remington New Army. It's just so easy to remove the cylinder for cleaning or to switch out for a quick reload... ala Clint Eastwood lol. The 1851 is the best pointing though for sure. The 1860 is probably the most pleasing to look at and of course, it's a 44 caliber and so packs more punch.

Colt is and always will be my favorite firearms company of all time. I love the 1851 navy, the single action army and almost every other revolver Colt produced. But I would like to see you profile something by Remington or maybe a Dance and Brothers. Everybody has profiled the 1851 Navy. The Confederacy used them but they used almost everything else they could get a hold of. During the civil war there were a lot of other revolvers. There were a lot of good revolvers available. This video was very good and I enjoyed it. Next time let's see something different. Thank you I gave you a thumbs up!

The Navy Colt, to me, is the epitome of practicality. Beautiful balance, accurate, enough power to be effective. I have several reproductions in my collection. Some have the standard length barrel while a couple have custom length. Longer than the Sheriff’s but shorter than standard, more to my feel of balance.

I will argue that the Remington 1858 New Army would be more practical for several reasons. First the top strap makes the gun stronger and more accurate. Second you can carry extra loaded cylinders and change them quickly. Third when cartridge conversions became popular it was the only one that could readily go back and forth from cartridge and cap and ball. When cartridge conversions first started to become a thing you might find yourself in an area that it was difficult to purchase them, at that point having a gun that you could slip the cap and ball cylinder back in was a huge advantage!

Good video. I just missed the guess as I said the Colt SAA. I'm not sure why the Navy is more practical, but was hoping to gain some insight. Perhaps I'll get my design juices flowing and design a new pistol and compete for one of those military contracts.
@SaintAndrewTV2 ай бұрын
The reason I say the most practical is if you place yourself in the year 1850, the invention of the navy was revolutionary for the reasons I stated in the video. I prefer the SAA as well, but I think I’d have a change of heart if I was alive in say 1856.

Call me curious, but I would like to hear more about why you have an issue with .44 Army. I have an original 1860 Army Colt I shoot that is clearly.44, but repros are wrong? I'm sure there's more to the story but would love to hear it. Great channel!
@SaintAndrewTV2 ай бұрын
I have no issues with the 1860 army, and quite green with envy that you have an original! I don’t like the Navy reproductions that are chambered in .44 caliber. That drives me crazy! Mainly because that was the whole reason for the ‘51’s existence was the smaller version of the Walker/Dragoon.
@tim314152 ай бұрын
Great video. I was never a fan of Colts, as the lack of a top strap seems structurally unsound. But your demonstration of how it is held together with a single wedge shows the ingenuity of the design.

I have a few pietta Navys and have fired an original one once. I ended up with a Pietta Remington. The cylinder swap it waay easier than the Colt. Can I say that the original was the same? No. Also I have a couple Navys that the pin doesn't remotely come out that easily as his does.

Nope, trying to switch cylinders on a Colt would be very slow compared to the Remington revolver, I'll carry my Remington with spare cylinders over a Colt anytime, let's see pop the wedge, pull the barrel, pull the cylinder, replace the cylinder with loaded cylinder, replace the barrel, put wedge back in, Now for the Remington, drop rammer, pull cylinder pin, drop cylinder, replace cylinder with loaded cylinder, push cylinder pin in, lock rammer up, much faster and no small parts to hang onto like Colts barrel wedge and possibly dropping it, especially if your trying to do this while on a horse, Now I call that Practical

You don't really need music - you are engaging enough. Anyway, I can't tell you what to do but I have stopped visiting some channels because the sound editing is so bad.
