1990 and 1991 were great years for electronic music. Saint Etienne, 808 State, EMF, Blur, Happy Mondays, Wire, The Fall, The Farm, Lush, The Shamen, Bigod 20, Candyflip, Jesus Jones, Cocteau Twins, Danielle Dax, The Orb, Front 242 and of course Depeche Mode to name just a few great bands with releases around that time.

North London locations you see in this video: Parliament Hill Lido (the swimming pool) on Hampstead Heath; either Highgate or Archway tube station interior, you see the exit to 'Archway Road' , it could be either station; the facade of the Tufnell Park Tavern pub on Tufnell Park Road; Georgiou's shop on the corner of Tufnell Park Road and Warrender Road; and a glimpse of the exterior of Charlton Court flats in Tufnell Park. I think Stanley and Wiggs lived in the area then so this is a kind of video diary.

Early 90's: post-doc'ing in Hamburg and feeling soooo lonely - a stellar Edinburgh friend sent me, a hugely appreciated, cheer-up slick mix-tape (cassette) by post. Two songs immediately & truly made ... my heart-miss-a-beat - Saint Etienne: "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" + "Nothing Can Stop Us Now". Holy moly - really, 30 years since it's release? "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" still sounds as "cool and deadly" as ever. Saint Etienne slick tunes have been constant in my tracklist (particularly "He's on the phone"). Guttingly, sweet Edinburgh gent, cinematographer Scott Ward (the slick mixtape DJ) is no longer here - I will never forget his lovely friendship, so this is also for him. Thank you St Etienne (and, the other stellar ... punk / indie / electro bands I grew up with at the time) for inspiring me. Slick Saint Etienne - you, so deserve more music industry recognition and accolades. In bocca al lupo.

@@BobSmith-s7j BobSmith-s7j rocks! Thank you for your sweet and engaging comment. Start of Hamburg was 1990 ... German (apart from Berlin) clubbing music was A.W.F.U.L and, MTV was naffsville city! So for those TWO and half years, apart from George Michael's legendary "Freedom" vid, I was surviving of my friend's UK mixtapes and my old ones. Holy moly, I thought I could list, until the cows come home '87 - '89 but ... I just remember St Etienne's only love... so for the first two years of the 1990's i was listening to * = I was a fan from the start '87 * Pet Shop Boys - It's a Sin + * The Cure - Just Like Heaven + * The Jesus and Mary Chain - April Skies + * The Smiths - Shella Take A Bow + R.E.M. - It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) * Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Passenger + The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York '88 * New Order - Blue Monday 1988 + The Primitives - Crash The La's - There She Goes * Erasure- A Little Respect + Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane The House of Love - Christine Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance Public Enemy - Don't Believe the Hype Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray Eighth Wonder - I'm Not Scared '89 * The Cure - Pictures of You Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus The Stone Roses - Fools Gold James - Sit Down Public Enemy - Fight the Power De La Soul - Me, Myself and I Soul II Soul - Back to Life * Morrissey - The Last of the Famous International Playboys Texas - I Don't Want a Lover + 808 State - Pacific State From above, you can see why this fabulous tune of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" (Saint Etienne version) on the fab mixtape, knocked me for six! Groovy @BobSmith-s7j rocks - what songs were on your slick sony walkman - 87 -89? ps the stellar gent who made the mixtape and who will always be dearly in my heart > www.ed.ac.uk/news/staff/obituaries/2013/scott-ward-180213

When you were young And on your own How did it feel to be alone? I was always thinking of games That I was playing Trying to make the best of my time But only love can break your heart Try to be sure right from the start Yes, only love can break your heart What if your world should fall apart? I have a friend I've never seen He hides his head inside a dream Someone should call him and see If he can come out Try to lose the down that he's found But only love can break your heart Try to be sure right from the start Yes, only love can break your heart What if your world should fall apart?
