Gotta give this manager time and even more assets, as in more players and better people working above him i.e. scouting etc. This man can be revolutionary. Today's game was nothing special. But for the first time, I wasn't nervous about the defence. Keep Maguire in his best position, on the bench.

Why do you think he can be revolutionary? Not hating, but honestly?

@@bogey-dope Because he has a better playing style than the former managers. Because he knows what types of players to buy. Because he is great at man management. Because he demands pro active football on and off the ball. Which means if you are not pro active you're easy to spot and being put on the bench. Also because he has the balls to bench players who don't perform. All he lacks is the support from upstairs... Which he lacks because the management above him is abysmal. "There's two rules of thumb to cope with man-to man system. 1: Rotate position 2: progressive carry (dribble forward)" Here we have the answer why Ten Hag has been gagging for FdJ all summer. Few CM's in the world can do progressive carries better then Frenkie, certainly not McFred. Brighton, Brentford, Liverpool, Leeds are just 3 examples of PL teams that play this hybrid man-to-man way. This is why PL is already the most transition-intense league in the world. Obviously the best team in the PL, is chock full of CM's and attackers who can dribble and do progressive carries in their sleep. One of them (Bernardo) is the player Xavi would have upgraded on FdJ if Barca could only afford it. With time, ten hag can coach CM's and rest of team to learn patterns that enable rule 1, but to really flourish united will need a CM and attackers that have mastered rule 2. Casemiro should be able to do it better than most, but we're still screaming for a specialist progressive carry CM. This is obviously the forte of Sancho, but southampton just double (even triple) marked him whenever he got the ball (especially 1st half). This is why Ten hag has been pushing for the anthony transfer. Teams like southampton will have no choice but to fall back and let go of the man marking in order to allow their CM's to support the fullback in stopping sancho and anthony.

its also going to take time for them to really get use to it and do it as 2nd nature. you still see some sloppyness but hopefully the 2 results gives players confidence again and it allows the talent to shine and get through the games when things arent quite going well. i do reckon a target man style striker who can be physical with defenders would be really useful to United right now as if teams tried to do this kind of system United just go ok then we go long and aim for flick on's as we have runners. im actually disapointed the board didnt go in for Scammaca who went to West Ham instead as he is a powerhouse who would offer something very different to the current forwards who are all skillful,agile players. Southampton knew this system would work decently because Rashford/Sancho/Elanga dont really have the ability to challenge CB's in the air

OGS was the OG with this deep defending and counter attacking football because that's the only tactic he can use with these players. Got them to 3rd and 2nd place and semifinals and finals in cup competitions, Rashford and Martial thriving in counter attacking football getting 20 G/A each. All around boring most times but also fun to watch in flashes, shame he was limited as a manager in where when the pressure starts to finally build he always fails. Europa League finals, Champions League runs, Top 4 finishes. And one other thing is he doesn't know how to rotate his players and when he does his tactics became useless because on how much he relies on his 1st team starting XI.

Spot on. Ole got a lot of flack, deservedly so at the end, but I never thought he was useless - he just took the team as far as he could. There are many comparable aspects to united over the last 2 games and ole's setup but that only takes you so far. It was evident, especially near the end, that outside of the counter attacking plan A there was no tactical plan B if we got found out. He was never going to be able to develop the team into a fluid, possession heavy style of play so when teams played low blocks (final vs Villareal epitomised this) we really struggled and looked bereft of ideas. One thing you cant take away from Mourinho is his proficiency at using subs and making tactical tweaks in the course of a game, i.e. 3-2 at the Etihad, where as ole's in game management again came across very 1 dimensional often using like-for-like subs. I believe that Ten Haag can take that step further than Ole and has been vindicated in the last 2 games as a manager with great tactical nuance. Like Arteta at Arsenal, Ten Haag has found out that there is a lot of coaching and teaching to be done until they can play 'his' football and in this intermediary phase its about grinding out wins and progressing each week until he has the personnel and a ubiquitous level of understanding through out his first team

They were lucky, Ten Hag coached a loss but individual brilliance on the counter won it. 70% pass completion, 0.8 xG for Southampton vs 0.12 xG for United in the second half... No tactical solution at all, lucky midfield in Lavia didnt track his runner. To conceed 17 shots, 14 from inside their own box that isn't a gameplan any other team United would of loss and any other VAR official then Wankes would mean they wouldn't have all 3 points.

Did you even watch the game though? xG isn't some kind of godly "deserved goals" counter. Man Utd were defending very brilliantly. Southampton would've never scored at all. Play that same match in the same conditions in parallel universes for 5 more times and it will still be a clean sheet. All of Southampton's chances were abstract; there was no concrete threat other than maybe 3 times.

when and if manchester united establish themselves as an possession base side don't think some teams will come at us like they are now

True. Teams know right now United are still vulnerable on the ball and they will press

@@EliteFutBol10 you missed my point against Man City teams don’t have any extra motivation to press high and risk exposing themselves so they play it safe against Manchester United the mentality is entirely different teams always go full throttle if they get exposed and battered then so be it .

United this game on the ball weren’t great. Build play this game wasn’t good because Martial hold up wasn’t there. Bruno first half made bad decisions. Eriksen was good first half but quiet second half

I think Ten Hag got it wrong. Should have started Ronaldo while having possession as target man. Once we went up, he was only effective at challenging for long balls aerially.
@k.m99002 жыл бұрын
I think he is trying to bring confidence and mentality back into the squad for now and Ronaldo and Sancho aren't counter attacking players (elanga and rashford are faster). Ronaldo and Sancho are more suited to playing higher up the pitch and the squad does not look ready for that.
@k.m99002 жыл бұрын
Also this is why Sancho struggled under OLE as we did not utilize his attacking strengths.

Eriksen should not be playing more than 45 minutes. He`s just not physically up to it. He was just watching the game from the field in the last 30 minutes
