You could see where they were going with it though. Originally, Saints Row just wanted to be a GTA knock-off with its own identity to distinguish it from those games. The original GTA games were silly, so Saints Row decided to be more serious with a grittier tone (then again, it was 2006, everything was trying to be gritty and serious back then). Later on, with SR3/SR4, GTA was trying to be gritty and serious, so Saints Row tried to be quirky and funny.

Much of what makes the Vice Kings so cool is the fact that they are clearly based on both the longstanding real-life Vice Lords gang based in Chicago and Death Row Records, with Benjamin King representing Suge Knight, Aisha representing 2Pac (with the whole 'faking her death' storyline, which was/still is a popular fan theory about 'Pac, as well as the 'memorial box-set' of Aisha's music King released after she 'died (which is also a nod to the late R&B singer Aaliyah),' and all of Aisha's music that was released after she 'died [As referenced in Saint's Row 2 & 3],' again just like 2Pac), Warren Williams representing Kurupt or Dr. Dre, Tony representing the many Blood-affiliated enforcers Suge kept in his employ to, uh, keep his artists in line, and Tanya representing both singer Michel'le (who had relationships & children with both Suge and Dr. Dre) and the white woman who currently owns Death Row & its assets. King walking away from the Gang and label he built in the end also parallels Suge's life after he lost the label back in the late 2000s.

Even if he’s a hardened gang boss, Benjamin is actually a cool guy to hang around with and have conversations about life. He was childhood friends with Julius and he still got a photo of them in their youth and he still cherish their friendship despite being in rival gangs.
