Saito 11 spark/petrol engine. Propeller is 13/7 @ 8,886 RPM - 1,980 Idle on 20:1 fuel.
I used a starter as an example for modellers who do not like hand starting. Lovely little engine - great potential for multi engine aircraft.
I used Klotz R50 oil and also Coolpower Blue in separate tests - no discernible difference in performance

Yo Van, If you enjoy this solo music, have a listen to the quartet in my latest video where I play a very nice tune on an OS IL300 four-cylinder in line. Now THAT'S really nice music and the engine also makes nice music in the cash register of the seller as well (HoHo) Thank you for your interest. Regards Brian Oily

I like the sound of the engine. Such a small displacement, but a pleasant sound.

Yo Oudeis, Yes, so do I - certainly a good sound and a lovely little engine. Can you imagine the sound of 2 or 4 of them in a multi engine model - you would want to record the sound so you could play it back at home (Ho Ho). Thank you for your interest. Regards Brian Oily

Thanks for the video. I have just finished 4 hours of running at 800m, 11 x x7" triple prop, 90F and 70% humidity. I am getting 4,000 - 10,640 rpms, with 4,000 the high idle. I like the power, throttle curve, and sound. I plan to fly this on a Lazer Works .45 Pushy Cat kit. 10,640 rpms is making turns for 70 mph, or at 90% throttle, 63 mph. This is fast air speed for a 4-cycle engine. After 4 hours of running, I really like the engine, and would be confident to fly it in a plane. Beautiful engine!

Yo Oudeis, After 4 hours of running that engine will be ready for very reliable flying. The propeller you are using is a bit on the small size which is why you have recorded such a high RPM and the high idle RPM. If you intend to use this propeller for flying, make sure you tune just a little rich on the ground as the engine will unload in the air and the RPM might get to the danger level. Be a shame to damage such a lovely engine. If you would like a copy of my test review, email me at oilyhand@bigpond.net.au and you might also let me know in which part of the world you live. Brian Winch Good advice. I was never planning on running it more than 90% of the max rpms, as Saito advises, for long life. And I expect the idle to come down quite a bit (I have not tried to find a low idle yet). Maybe a 12 x 7" triple would be a better prop. The FG-21 is turning out to be the more difficult Saito engine to run in.

These gas engines are getting so small, that almost all the old .40-.90 designs can be flown with gas now. I looked through all the RCM plans (without copyright) on outerzone and found about 20 that I was interested in. I will be building a Pushy Cat 47" to try an FG-11, then maybe a Cosmic Coyote or a Rivets pylon racer. The Saito is a bit pricey for me, but I like the sound.

Yo Oudeis, Some time back I wrote a series of articles on how to convert almost any glow engine to spark and a reader in the UK converted and OS FS 20 - a 3.2 cc four stroke to spark and it turned out really well. He said it would run all day on a teaspoon of petrol. In what part of the world do you live? You can contact me by email on oilyhand@bigpond.net.au if you like as this is easier than using You Tube for general conversations. Regards Brian Oily

Hi Brian, I am building a Top Flight DC3. I may want to consider putting in two if the Saito FG-11's, although power may be a bit on the top end. However looking at their recommended power plants it looks about right. I need reliability as a dead stick will most certainly result in irreparable damage. I don't want to go to EP however. What's your thoughts on this? Many thanks in advance. Peter

Hi Brian - I have a new FG11 that I cant get to run.. it has started a run for a short time a couple of times but as soon as I touch the throttle it dies. Can you give me good starting points for the two needles? I have the main needle set to 1 1/2 turns from closed per the manual, but I dont have any idea how to adjust the slow needle when I cant get it to start.

Hi Brian , I've had my fg 11 in a decathlon for about 31 flying hrs . Sweet little motor and I have the tune soundly just like ur video. But doing extreme aerobatics it sucks a little air and the pump can't make it back with fuel it seems . It dead sticks without fail at least once during a trip at the field ! I don't trust it to do low passes! Could the pump in the carbie be not working as it should? I have an asp 61 glow with over 90 hrs run time and it never quits ! Would be a great motor if it kept going ! Have spent lots of hours trying to tune the problem out . Have 30 yrs with glow and Model engines!

Hi brian, did you have had any problem with this engine? I bought one recently, it didn't arrived yet, but looking through forums, I found some guys that had problems with the connecting rod getting oval, maybe by lack of lubrication. If you had any problems I would like to know. thanks, your videos are awesome, alway watch them before buying an engine! Bernardo

Yo Bernardo, Thank you for your kind comments about my videos - I am glad they are of assistance to you. In MY opinion - the most hazardous aspect of modelling is reading forums. Obviously there is some excellent information available but this is much less than the rubbish available and ...how do you sort the good from the bad? A written problem draws sympathisers like honey draws a bee - if you have a problem you - you can bet some body else has the same problem or they know of somebody or their butcher told them the grocer said he knew a baker who heard about the problem from a passing dog in the street. There is nothing at all wrong with the Saito 11cc engine - it is identical to all other Saito engines - just a different capacity and ...no...they do not prematurely wear conrods unless....an incorrect oil is used or the oil content is not measure correctly. To my knowledge and long experience (also as the Saito warranty repairer in Australia), there are 3 oils suitable that I recommend and I have never had a problem with any of them in any Saito. I recommend Morgans Blue Coolpower, Klotz KL 200 Original Techniplate and DeLuxe Materials Powermodel 2TS - all of these are excellent and will look after you lovely Saito engine. If you would like to discuss this further you can contact me at: oilyhand@bigpond.net.au Regards Brian Oily

Hi Brian, I've just bought a new FG-14C and had it shipped up to North Queensland, we don't have a hobby shop here but was hopping you could tell me the brand and type of spinner you are using here, it looks like a good design without cut-outs or a back plate? I have not run the engine in, but ordered a bottle of Morgans coolpower blue, do you have a recommendation or link to an article for running in time and process as the manual mentions it by tanks of petrol, which of course depends on size of tank. thanks Murray

YoDXINGatTSVinVK4 Those spinners are from the range of DuBro and they are almost solid. I use them mainly if I want to spin the engine with an electric starter and I have a range of them with different thread sizes. Specify the engine you want one for when ordering. I find the best way of running in is to start the engine and run it up SLIGHTLY rich until it gets hot (finger on engine head to test) then let it get absolutely cold - no warmth at all then start it again and go through the same procedure about 6-7 times until the engine will hold maximum RPM without sagging any more than about 300 RPM. Real nice. I`m looking for a small engine like this to make a 250W 12VDC generator but I would like to use regular gasoline (no oil) from the vehicle. Do you know an engine model for regular gasoline? Thanks
@BrianOilyEngines
@BrianOilyEngines 5 жыл бұрын
Yo Gerson, There are no model engines that run on straight petrol - they all need the 'petroil' mixture as they are all of the dry sump design as the engines run in all attitudes in a model. You won't get an engine of such small capacity but you can try some of the hand tools engines as are used in leaf cutters, lawn blowers and the like as there are some now that are four strokes with a wet sump but, as I said, of larger capacity. Thank you for your interest Regards Brian Oily

I have been trying to decide between this Saito Fg11 four stroke or a Laser 70 four stroke engine. Can you tell me which engine is easier to start with less tuning and fussing ?
@BrianOilyEngines
@BrianOilyEngines 8 жыл бұрын
Yo Frank, What a terribly difficult position you have put me in. Simple fact is I could not make such a decision as I have both of these engines and both are delightful. Both Lasers and Saito have a long pedigree of very high quality and fuss free running. About the only edge I could give is that the Saito is spark ignition so it runs on petrol - very inexpensive and there is little if any exhaust efflux (goo out the muffler) but the oil from a glow engine doesn't bother me anyway. As a point of interest, the Laser engines can be converted to spark ignition and they run extremely well. Some years back you could get them with a MiniMag magneto but that company has gone with the wind. Why not buy both then you won't have to make the decision (Ho Ho) Regards Brain Oily

Brian Winch Thank you Brian...it would be wonderful if either Saito or Laser could come out with a four stroke magneto driven petrol engine, without having to have an ignition unit and battery !

Yo PP, About the 12th one in line on my bench--lots of model kits/plans - lots of engines - so little time. Eventually the engine will be used in a model requiring a 10cc engine as I like the reliability of it. Err, isn't that red cloak a bit dangerous around spinning propellers? Thanks for your interest Brian Oily
