Guilty Gear has Dizzy, with move names as cute as wonderful as: "I used this to catch fish" "I used this to pick fruit" "We talked a lot together" "We fought a lot together" "The light was so small in the beginning" "Please, leave me alone" "What happens when I'm TOO alone"
@gearhead6042

Fun fact. They all had hyperviolent names in GGX where she was the boss character so it's implied that she renamed her move names because she didn't like how scary they sounded. The ice fish was literally called Skullcrusher for example.

It’s somewhat similar in Starcraft. Everyone says “ling speed” instead of metabolic boost or “ultra armor” instead of chitinous plating. It’s just easier in every way to say what it does instead of the fancy name. Viewers can understand it better, it’s easier to say, and just from a player perspective it’s how most remember it, because the function of the upgrade is what we care about.

i feel like with the exception of Raven and Leo, cuz they're German, move names in Guilty Gear are really on point. A couple of them get shorthanded (like Bacchus Sigh turning into just "mist") but for the most part people just say the move name when they're talking about them
@styru4980
@styru4980 5 жыл бұрын
Dizzy's move names are entire sentences, like "I used this to catch fruit", "What happens when i'm TOO scared". People just call it "Bubble", "Fire Bubble", "Ice pillar", "Fire fish", and so on. Even tho that looks awful, that actually made me interested in the character, because the move names made it looked like they actually matter, and i started imagining she using it outside of fights. Great way to give depth to the character background IMO.

I would love it if in the FGC we adoped "tatsu" in place of "quarter circle back" and "hado" in place of "quarter circle forward." Saying QCF and QCB is so laborious, and anyone who's ever played a fighting game can get on board with what tatsu and hado mean after just a tiny introduction. "What's tatsu HP mean?" "Quarter circle back into heavy punch." "Oh, because that's the motion you use to get Ryu's spinning kick?" "Yeah." "Ah. Sweet."

That was the whole point of numpad notation. Around 2000, FGC noobs were complaining about stick motions as many were coming from playing PC games and QCF-style inputs were confusing, so numpad shot to popularity by default. As an OG arcade player, I hated this switch but you gotta change with the times...

@@geekgo4 When Super SFIV AE hit Steam followed by KOF XIII, most people played on KBnM. This was before the Xbox One controller standardization happened, as most KBnM players refused to learn pad and wouldn't shell out the money for a fight stick. Surprisingly, people who played with KBnM realized that it gave them an advantage that pad and stick players didn't know about until the Hitbox came out.

@@geekgo4 Dude I've seen videos. Keyboard use is crazy looking. It looks to me like keyboards hold the same appeal of hitboxes, though. Looks freaking weird from the outside, but discrete buttons for movement can be used for more precision. And frankly. since I've been using the PS4 controller, I've learned how maddening that d-pad is since it's one piece. Pressing "right" can sometimes register an "up-right."

Had to deal with this in Super Smash Bros. They're not called "Tilts!" They're called "Strong Attacks!"

I don't know anyone in the Smash community that calls tilts, "Strong Attacks". Nobody looks at the "tutorial" long enough to even see that name.

It sounds dumb, but the only reason i dont play more unist is because of the notation is shit. Mk and tekken have the best, sf is good, but weeb notation is so needlessly messy

What I super hate about Tekken, MK and SF's move lists is that they don't tell you what the hell the moves do. Especially in MK, some moves have properties that you just have to realize while you're playing. KI's move list is 120% the best. Not only does it tell you how to do the move, it also tells you what happens to your opponent when they get hit by it, or how the move behaves on the way to your opponent. That shit rules so hard it makes my eyes bleed. While reading the moves list, you're able to start conceiving a strategy.

@@pickledparsleyparty oh yeah i never use the ingame movelist, its just easier having an app like tekken chicken on your phone...plus in the case of mk, you cant even rely on the frames to be right lol
