If I remember the Dowager Empress had been in the Cold Palace for a period of time. And the Dowager was right in having Ruyi sent there to 1 quiet the mind of the public due to the deaths of the 2 children 2. to keep her alive as the others were becoming more blatant in their attempts to kill Ruyi-esp A'Ruo. The Dowager was the level head in almost every scenario.

@@mariahardy1201 No, it did provide some protection and reduced what was done, plus have the guards assigned. it also gave the Emperor time to let things cool off otherwise more people wouldve demanded Ruyi die for the deaths of the 2 royal heirs. It also allowed several people to show their true colors.

The Empress Dowager also used the time that Ruyi was in the cold palace to plant her own hand-picked concubines and consorts underneath the emperor to know what was going on in his palace.

Think of it as a prison for concubines. It's where they put members of the Emperor's harem that have permanently fallen from grace. Some would prefer death that to be thrown there and permanently forgotten. The place is dark, dank and cold. It lacks proper care and is rarely attended to, so it is in constant disrepair and overrun with insects. Depending on how many people (prisoners) are there at a time, many of the women there have fallen to insanity due to such long periods of solitary confinement. (The servants aren't allowed to interact with them. They drop off food through the door and never speak to them.) If you don't have a way to procure money, such things as clean food, clothes, water etc will be impossible. (Also, if you wind up there, most of your valuables are taken from you regardless--you're being thrown away like trash, after all. You will never be in favor again, so you are forbidden luxuries. Unless you have quick and nimble fingers that can grab some baubles etc before you are thrown away to bribe guards on the outside to give you better things, you're doomed.) This is why Li You advised Ruyi to grab whatever valuables she could get her hands on, to use as money to bribe servants/guards on the outside to give her better food, warmer clothes, etc. Family and friends are forbidden from seeing/aiding you as well, which is why it was hard for Hailan to sneak Ruyi and Suoxin decent items and she had to try her luck at night; possibly bribing whatever guards were there to look away. Usually the people that go in there never get out. They die there with their names either lost to time or used as a cautionary tale. And since no one, not even servants care for you there, it is easy for you to fall victim to assassinations. (In this show, Ruyi's food was tampered with, poisonous snakes sent to her rooms and her place was set on fire.) The ones put there are usually only there due to a serious crime (killing royal heirs, viciously framing someone so that they will be executed, etc). If the Emperor doesn't decide that you should die for your crimes, you face slow death in the Cold Palace. At least, that is how all of the historical C Dramas portray the Cold Palace to be.

@@Lariel172 yep and the problem is the servants take note and frequently bully like sending food that was already going bad to the Cold Palace vs just sending them simpler food or leftovers which wouldve been more nutrious and not cost extra. :( getting limited charcoal and no medicines to help balance up food deficiencies and the cold also made it bad. Add in that most of the women had not handled their own needs before -so that caused them to also be at a disadvantage. It never made sense to me that they couldnt rally together to clean up or group resources together to be better off. --in that case it was better for the others once Ruyi came and Jiang was willing to treat all of the women once they got permission to let him join.

It was like a women's prison except you didn't necessarily have to do anything to be put in there. As I understood it, a lot of the women where former concubines & consorts of the late emperor(s) who basically outlived there usefulness. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Some were "political" rivals of the empress(es) (such as Ruyi and the one that attacked Dowager). Most quickly fell into insanity. I wonder why they didn't just climb the wall and escape the Forbidden City. 🤔
