The Saker Contour Gauge is the perfect tool to duplicate any irregular shape necessary. Simply press the edge of the tool against what it is you are trying to copy, and then pull it off.
The tool will have a duplicate copy of what where you needed. Flip the locking lever into the perpendicular position to ensure you don't accidentally change the shape.
This can then be laid on whatever material you want to cut. It works perfectly on materials like plywood, sheet metal, tile, or any other material with a flat surface.
Use this tool if you need to cut hardwood or laminate flooring to fit around a door jamb. Or it also is great when you are installing cabinets and you have pipes sticking out of the wall.

However to answer your question a practical application for knowing the "contour" of a rock could be for a side walk project that involves stone or even a textured wall with different pebbles and stones.
