I got my iPhone 8 as late as July 2018 and trust me it is buttery smooth. I love my primary phone s9 plus but honestly? Apple delivers on all fronts. The keyboard is excellent for starters. I can fly .

I’d rather it still show me the notification from the messages, but there’s a way to turn it off so it won’t display the content of the message rather than just turn it off all together.

Yes, if you go to settings, then notifications. Find messages, then scroll to the bottom and press show previews, you can then change it to only when the phone is unlocked or never. :)
