The Japanese internet has an abundance of dark and unsettling content within it, While many made their way to the English-speaking world, there is a plethora of threads and topics that are confined to their home country. Among Japan's most infamous threads, often called a creepypasta, is known as ”リアル," Simply the word "Real." As the name suggests, the thread was written as a cautionary tale. One warning to those on 2chan's occult boards to be careful with what you become involved in. Because there are things so nefarious that you just cannot get rid of. them...
So, allow me to introduce you to Real. A well-known Japanese thread that isn't well-known overseas. I sincerely hope I did the original thread justice 💚

What struck me the most about this story is that the ghost was feeling lonely. She haunted him because she felt like he has a good heart. And once they did the prayers wishing her all the kind things, she stopped haunting him. She probably found peace from there. That hits me deep.

The more it stays in the world of the living, the more worst it would be. There's a reason for different religions has some sort of rituals relating a safe passage to the afterlife. Even at the story you see them making sure the ghost pass on. It is sad yes but the only thing we could do is pray and leave the rituals to the experts.

Honestly the story sounds like the set up to a romance manga involving an office worker and a ghost girl where the first few chapters treat her like a monster but eventually through a spirit medium he founds out the spirit isn’t evil, hell the story even had the “the spirit thinks you’re a kind person and that’s why she’s around you” type twist.

One thing I think is interesting about ghosts is what their level of awareness actually is. As someone who does get involved in the paranormal, some ghosts seem to be fully lucid and capable of communicating but others seem to be only partially if at all aware of what they are doing and the impact they are having on the people around them. As though they either aren't entirely lucid, or they have just as much difficulty interacting with us as we do with them. This story seems almost as though the spirit was completely unaware of the pain and fear she was causing circle's friend until his grandmother was available to act as a medium and finally bridge the gap between them. Though even then, she was clearly also not in a rational state of mind, likely binding him out of fear of him leaving her without realizing she was hurting him. Perhaps in a perpetual state of fight or flight until the grandmother spoke to her and calmed her down. It makes me wonder what they see when they look at a living person? Do they fully see us, or do they see something just as frightening as what we see when we look at them?
@Xylospring
@Xylospring Жыл бұрын
It really is a good question, what do they see at all when they look at us? Awareness of the pain is interesting too. What if the rash on the neck is just her trying to hug at him, something so basic for humans, but it's the differences of their beings causing it. Like if a being of fire tried to touch your hand. Something basic that leads to some injury, and not intending to hurt the other. With them even appearing to them like that...

Really enjoyed your retelling of the story! I remember hearing this story on Kowabana, although it had additional twist there. Guy who was tormented by the ghost got a call later on saying that Priestess who helped him died. He then recieved letter she wrote before her death where she apologised to him for lying. Spirit was indeed powerful, but it was not a lonely spirit as priestess claimed. Priestess somehow was able to help OP by putting him in compound you mentioned, and doing something during her life to keep spirit off him. Although as she was nearing her death she decided to confess in order for him to not hold a grudge against her, and for him to at least expect what was to come. Only at this moment OP revealed himself to be anonymous friend of guy in the story and mentioned he do not know what happened with him.

Just seeing you physically as the host, for a few moments really brings back memories of those old shows from Early 2000s TV like Ripley’s Believe It or Not, The Wax Museum, and a few others. Really cool seeing your confidence grow with every post. Keep up the good work.

Thank you. That was an interesting video and to be honest, I had never heard of "Real"; I must say it reminded me a lot of a story that happened to a cousin of mine in the 1990s. One night, she came home late from university and had to get off the bus in a not very recommendable place. A man with a knife grabbed her arm and wanted to take her to a vacant lot nearby. Suddenly, in her words, "the guy turned as pale as a candle and I felt someone grab me by the other arm and pulled me across a nearby avenue. I didn't see who was pulling me, but I turned to see the guy and he was on his knees, staring at me, as if he couldn't believe what was happening". Whoever she/he was, he saved my cousin that night and I am grateful.

Would you look at that. I saw a fanart of the ghost of this story many years ago, and even managed to find the thread while looking for a translation, but since I didn't want to read the whole story through machine translation, I just gave up, and now, years later, I actually got to hear the story, and it was great, so thank you for sharing.

I think the ghost mechanics in the game "World of Horror" was based on this story, to some extent. That game also requires bowing and clapping in specific ways to deal with ghosts (though in the game, you do that to banish ghosts instead of summon them).

Another banger from Sakura! That was a fascinating spooky story, real or not, and your storytelling skills made it more captivating. You're getting really good at this! Don't worry about being awkward on camera, that's perfectly normal. As a fellow shy person, I admire your courage. I could never show my face to the world like that (despite people other than my mom telling me I do have a handsome face, I'd just die from embarrassment lol). Looking forward to what you have in store for us!

The ghost girl fits the description of a yokai called Nure Onago. They're the spirits of young women that got lost in swamps or marshes and died alone and scared. They latch onto people who come into contact with them and are said to cause an awful smell, like something wet and rotting. They aren't malevolent, they just make the life of the person they cling to really difficult.

Super cool story, it's always nice when there's a less adversarial approach to ghosts. I'm not too familiar with Japanese ghost lore, but my grandma was from Hokkaido and that branch of the family is said to have a minor history of experiences with psychic phenomenon. The 'Real' story reminds me quite a bit of a vivid dream I myself had a while ago, which is a little spooky given my lack of familiarity with how Japanese ghosts operate. In the dream, there was a nose mound on an island somewhere, but not necessarily an island surrounded by water. During the Japanese invasion of Korea in the late 1500s, samurai would cut off the noses of the people they killed (payment was contingent upon how many enemies you killed, so noses were used to keep track) and these noses were preserved and brought back to Japan where they were stored in so called nose mounds. Anyhow, as said, there's one such mound in an isolated area, nearly forgotten to time. Before that though, when the invasion of Korea was more recent history, the spirits of the Korean soldiers were causing issues in the vicinity of the nose mound. The locals, in an attempt to quiet the spirits, interred a young girl underground as an offering to the gods. After the girl's sacrifice, there were no more issues, so life went on and the whole story was eventually forgotten. However, unbeknownst to the locals, the gods they sought assistance from were closer to devils. Through the years, the 'gods' have been tormenting the spirits of the girl and the soldiers, slowly but surely growing stronger as they feed off of their pain and suffering. Eventually, once they've grown strong enough, they'll be able to fully manifest in the physical world and grow exponentially more powerful as they torment fresh, living victims. The only way to avert this is to find the mound and the underground chamber where the girl was interred. Then, the noses have to be repatriated to Korea and the spirit of the girl has to be shown paternal affection before being given a proper burial. I don't regularly remember my dreams, and when I do, they're generally meaningless and weird, so it stuck out to me how this dream was so vivid and coherent. Realistically, it's probably nothing, but I can't help but think about how some of my ancestors were samurai. I don't know the particulars of who was in what conflict, but a part of me wonders if one of them brought noses back from Korea? Perhaps I had this dream to help my family atone for what was done?

That poor spirit…I absolutely love that treating her with kindness was what ended the guy's suffering, rather than violently trying to cast her out. It's as true with the mundane as the paranormal, we tend to react with fear and violence to things we don't understand, when kindness and compassion is often times the better answer. I'm glad everything worked out.
