@LilyLewis77111 ай бұрын
There’s a lot of structural stuff that can seem like ghosts if that’s what you’re primed to believe in, I’ve heard. Drafts, leaking gas or CO2, creaking, etc. There’s an anime I really like (Ghost Hunt) that (spoilers!) actually has their first ghostbusting case turn out to be mostly structural damage- the building was subsiding and generally really old, which is what caused creaking, doors suddenly slamming, cold drafts, etc. It’s really neat to me that a ghost hunting anime would basically have their first case be ‘no ghosts’ haha

It used to but it petered perhaps once the internet and later social media started to take over everyone's time and attention. I think it's because the previous generation's culture tend to linger much longer and thus don''t actually go away. Current generation are living in a blazing fast popular culture and they are more exposed to more stuff earlier than the previous generations. Several years back I caught my 9 year old students playing a game of spirit-of-the-coin(one of the main triggers to hysteria in schools). I scolded them with religion and the lead girl said OK. She misunderstood my scolding. They resumed their game but replaced the devil with Jesus. I face palmed... When I was a teen the whole country was in some form of hysteria about the rumors of a witch traveling around sucking blood of young men. When I heard that she's crossing the strait to get to my state...yeah, I rolled my eyes. Whether it’s about your attendance, if you didn’t follow an instruction correctly, if there was a misunderstanding, if you didn’t turn in a homework assignment, whatever. If your mistake was not so severe, they might not be that mean about it, or they might do it with a smile on their face, but best believe they will call you out in front of everyone.

I have a theory. These mass hysteria incidents might happen due to how people handle their emotions. If Japanese people are used to keeping their feelings to themselves, then these feelings has to come out at some point, in one way or another. Being humiliated right in front of other people could be a trigger. I could be wrong though.
@MiguelThinks5 ай бұрын
I was just about to comment the same. I agree. People don't realize how big of a deal mental health is these days, especially in Asia and Southeast Asia. Cultures in which people have poor methods of emotion regulation would end up having sever consequences. As much as respect and reverence being admirable values, often times people are just too uptight for their own good, as harsh as that sounds. Coming from a Filipino family with extensive relatives, I would know :P EDIT: on a relevant side note, countries like Indonesia and the Philippines occasionally have cases where students end up spazzing out, appearing as though they are "possessed", as described in conservative Catholic schools nonsurprisingly. This is definitely the result of high levels of stress and impossible expectations of honor and success.

justice for Porygon, he didn't do anything 😭 I've always wondered how that episode got animated without anybody working on it feeling sick or uncomfortable looking at it. @systematicirony66611 ай бұрын
Not everyone is photosensitive, and people weren't as distinctly aware of photosensitivity at the time. Children are less likely to be aware of their photosensitivity and sit closer to the TV and not know to close their eyes or look away when there's flashing lights. I have inactive seizures, but I'm aware enough to look away and cover my eyes if any flashing starts on the TV (I'm also DEFINITELY not an extreme case - it takes very rapid contrasted flashing to do anything).

to be fair, much of the reports of war of the worlds mass hysteria were actually made up. The vast majority of listeners figured out very quickly that it was fake, and those that didn't just called local authorities or the station itself to try to verify information bc they weren't sure what they were supposed to do since no evacuations or anything were announced. Newspapers at the time were just making stuff up to capitalize on the amount of people calling the station angry that they didn't say it wasn't real.. because it had freaked out their very young children. they were even forced to interrupt the play bc local authorities were getting fed up with all the calls from confused listeners and the station realized they could actually get in trouble by keeping the prank going by not announcing it was just a radio play based on a book.

Oh, man, the Porygon seizure debacle. I'd actually forgotten that was a massive brouhaha. EDIT: A mass hysteria incident I was actually able to bear witness to was the Chona Mae earthquake tsunami scare of 2012 in my hometown of Cebu in the Philippines. After a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, some wisenheimer decided to spread a rumor about a tsunami on the way (thanks to the 2011 tsunami still pretty fresh in people's minds), which later led to people running down the streets and abandoning cars en masse. Even though Cebu is smack dab in the middle of the Philippines, surrounded by other islands, and a lot of the people were running even in parts of the city far from the harbor. Well, that, and the epicenter of earthquake wasn't located in a place where it could have caused a tsunami. Having been let go early from work thanks to the quake, I was half-amused and half-frustrated at people panicking over an impossibility out of ignorance of how tsunamis occured, and I had to call my parents to assure them that they didn't need to join the fleeing masses.

Mass hysteria is actually kind of a good sign of a society that still has lots of very empathetic individuals tied to community life that is tight enough to cause something that is likely a form of advanced empathic mirroring. We actually have this all around us, it's just not often recognized as so. You know crowds going nuts at sports events and stadiums? In part that's also a form of "mass hysteria" of sorts... it's not qualified as so because you don't develop negative symptoms, but lots of people tend to have an empathic reflex there too. Go with the flow like. You have people who starts laughing because people around them also are, or that staring up effect where one person staring up fixed somewhere in the middle of the street will eventually get people passing to do the same thing. On a smaller scale, you have scientific studies with tests of random people going along with actors even when they strongly disagree with something. There are some subjects that will say - I don't know why I went with it. In some of those cases it can be not because of fear of reproval, trying to fit in, among other conscious decisions... it can be pure subconscious empathetic mirroring. This case of the schoolgirls also has a lot to do with culture and history - how much the Sarin Gas attack still lives on the Japanese subconscious, plus natural disaster preparedness with Earthquakes in mind, plus the fact that this happened in Hiroshima, even more if those students plus other victims had a visit to nuclear bomb historic sites... so it can be a multi-layered thing. The last case sounds a lot like the War of the Worlds radio drama transmission by Orson Welles... probably what inspired it in the first place. Anyways, an interesting subject!

I remember the pokemon thing. The news made it all the way here to California and my middle school lunch room (yes I am old). My mom used it as an excuse to call Pokemon "demonic" and ban me from engaging the franchise, further othering me at school. =_= I feel like the third story is a lot like the crying scene in Midsommar...

Mass hysteria seems to be an issue with education/ignorance The pokemon incident and I think a few others happening around the same time seem to have informed legislation about flashing lights around the world.

porygon reunited me and my daughter after she disappeared for 15 years, he never gave up on our case and helped us reunite back in 97’ just as he was about to make his tv debut. he had been really excited about it and it breaks our hearts to know such a good man was robbed of his dreams over a misunderstanding from production.

@@Jhud69 Well keep in mind that Pokémon came out in the late 1990s and in the western world at least there was already largely televised events of famous celebrities getting into legal troubles while having a high viewership rating in the process such as the OJ Simpson trials and Bill Clinton’s infamous Monica Lewinsky scandal. What I’m saying is that the 90s had a lot of counterculture movements during the decade.

I finally checked out the scenes myself of the infamous Pokemon episode. There is actually one part with Porygon causes flashing lights, but there are overall several scenes of the strobe effect. Most of them are from the missiles and they are AGGRESSIVE. It's astounding they even made the episode at all, it's so obviously too much.

I’d describe the group hyperventilation as a mass psychogenic illness. Basically the nocebo effect (believing something is going to hurt even though it’s harmless) but on a bigger scale. Simulating the same affects because you genuinely believe you have the illness, even though you don’t. But that’s just my guess. Also looking at those images makes me think a gas attack happened. OOF.

I remember watching the morning news after that Pokemon episode aired in Japan. The incident was somewhat well-known in the US, and I think most of us quickly forgot the name of the show. When it arrived here and became huge, I don't think the name rang a bell! There was no holding that mania back, though. It did seem to help the image of anime here. Before that, my friends were exchanging VHS copies of edgy OVAs, and because of things like that, there was a lot of misunderstanding about anime="adult cartoons", lel.

The last godzilla story reminds me of a similair incident with a broadcast of War of The Worlds on radio. it was set up to start like a normal radio schedule that got interrupted by news about aliens and stuff like in the book. there was a monologue at the start of the airing that explained that it was a drama, but some people tuned in _after_ said monologue and thought it was real, which resulted in mass panic. im pretty sure inside a mind did a video about it!
