In this episode we will evaluate whether it was worse to be a snitch or to be gay in the Soprano family. We will start by examining the reactions when they were first accused, the respective verification processes used to confirm the rumors, the way the truth was handled once it was accepted, the sentencing and execution, and the way their families were treated afterwards.
We will also discuss if they could have stayed gone once they left or if their situations had been reversed and I will end with a little channel update.

Truth is Vito could have kept it hidden better than he did. He did blow a security guard at a job site he was at. He did go to a gay bar not to far away. It would be worse to be a rat. However, that's taking in the factors of the only thing that actually matters to the mafia: being able to make money. I think the main, if only, reason Vito was killed was Phil. Tony seemed willing to let Vito relocate - as he would still be making money without being around Joisey and humiliating the pygmy thing. Also, you could always pursue that lifestyle in secret and be a come-behind-kind-of-guy. Keep up the appearances; don't go dressing up like a Village Person. While Paulie's actions constituted a betrayal and did financial harm to Tony and the family, he wasn't leaking information to the authorities that would have seen Tony get put away and their organization shut down.

But it’s also an example of just how the Mafia has changed, just like society. D’Amato was killed because the accusation was made against him. His Family didn’t make an effort to confirm the rumor because the rumor itself was sufficient to warrant his execution. In the Sopranos (set approx 15 years after the D’Amato situation), they at least made efforts to confirm the rumors. Today there are surveillance tapes that suggest that mobsters are going to gay clubs and even discussing drag shows together. But as long as they’re discreet and keep up appearances (ie, be masculine, have a wife/mistress, and probably not dress up like someone from the Village People) they won’t be killed for engaging in such behavior.

The answer is to some extent generational. The old guys--Paulie, Carlo, Silvio--want Vito killed immediately and with extreme prejudice. The Tony/Bobby/Patsy generation is more ambivalent about Vito. The young guys--Christopher and his AA buddy--mostly just make jokes about it. At times, Chris talks like he wants something done about Vito but I think he's mostly just trying to put Tony on the spot.

If we're talking about from the mob perspective, it's pretty clear that it's not in even a question that being a snitch/rat is looked at as far worse & an automatic death sentence. While the majority looked down on Vito's homosexuality, there were only a few of the mobsters in Tony's crew who outright supported having Vito whacked. The fact that Phil Leotardo was the boss of a major New York crime family & made a far bigger deal about Vito than anyone was the deciding factor. Tony definitely would have accepted the type of "close but not too close" business arrangement that Vito proposed not for Phil causing so much trouble over it.

I think for Vito deception was the main factor that doomed him. Paulie said he felt betrayed by Vito because he had misled everybody into believing he was straight. It also didn't help that while pretending to be a regular family man with a wife and kids, he openly flaunted his lifestyle by going to a gay nightclub and blowing a security guard at the construction site. Maybe if Vito had come out to Tony and the rest of the guys. Though it would have been shocking, at the very least it could have lessened the urge for some of them to want to murder him right there and then, even if some of them would have lost respect for him. Also if he and his wife had divorced amicably, and she found someone else, then Phil may not have been as enraged by this humiliation to his family to want to take matters into his own hands.

While being gay was huge problem as well, they did atleast discuss the matter much further and not everyone assumed they would just kill him. I definitely think being a snitch is worse and I think if Phil hadn't been all over em Vito would have outlived Tony. The situations with the families seem to absolutely be a matter of where Tony was personally. It's implied that Tony does pay other widows, wives who's husbands are locked up, etc, to some degree so I think Marie and the kids got shorted cause Tony couldn't control himself. I think the torture thing was more a matter of who did it too, if it had been someone from Jersey I imagine it going quicker. Personally, if I think like Tony Especially then P*ssy is far worse. Vito had many flaws. Even Phil had to tell him that it's tempting to not pay tribute the Boss' wife even if his life is in the balance but you can't think that way. By the time Tony was about to recover Vito was practically praying he would die because it would boost his profile even more and Finn would be less protected presumably. Still, P*ssy was warned by Jackie and Tony not to move anymore H and he kept doing it. Then he turns on his best friends. Vito could have went straight to the feds when he was outed but he went into hiding instead. He stepped up when Ralph got killed and became the family's biggest earner and had tons of ambition. Tony was only gonna sanction a hit on him because he couldn't keep fighting Phil on the matter. I have no doubt that if Phil didn't have a personal interest in Vito then Tony would have accepted his Atlantic City proposal. If the Omerta didn't have such old rules then Vito wouldn't have been seen as doing anything wrong. Sal did plenty wrong that he could help.. Great video. Being a rat is worse as there is pressure from the FBI to stay in the arms reach of the mob in order to acquire information. This is likely why Pussy had to return despite the threat to his life as the FBI already had him up on charges and could track him down and arrest him should he abandon his end of the deal to gather information on Tony (the Caribbean's is not a hard place to have him extradited from if the FBI wanted). Vito on the other hand was not forced to return from safety in NH, there was not threat of being tracked down by the FBI if he choose to stay. It was Vito who decided to return on his own accord, had he stayed he would have been kept out of harms way provided the mob never found him (which they had been having no luck at).

Plus keep in mind, Phil had a personal vendetta against Vito, since he was married to Phil’s cousin. Phil felt personally dishonored but Vitos actions. I still think that being a snitch is worse though

If not for Phil, I think Tony would have at least given the Vito in AC thing a shot. If it was profitable and Tony's guys put up with it, he would continue to let Vito live. If not, he would have him killed.

Being a 🐀 is 100% worse. Tony was willing to let Vito get away and move to Atlantic City even after meeting with Vito when he came back. Tony even said to Dr. Melfi that he doesn’t care if someone is homosexual or not. It was Phil who made it difficult. Being a rat is something that is unforgivable though because it puts everybody at risk of going to prison obviously if someone is talking to the feds.
