Tony Soprano is dead. What happens now?

In this episode we will ponder what would happen if Tony had been killed at the end of the series. We will not be looking into who did it, rather we will be looking at how Meadow, Carmela, Janice and AJ would fare afterwards, before moving on to who would take the top spot, Paulie Walnuts, Larry Barese or Patsy Parisi.

It was Patsy who had Tony whacked, on the orders of Paulie, who was actually a mole for Butch, who would be in charge of NY. We all know Paulie has long standing ties with NY that even Tony caught on to at one point. Why do you think he wasn’t targeted when Phil launched the first attack? It was their plan all along to have Paulie become the new boss. But Phil underestimated just how hungry his underlings were. Butch used their enemies to get rid of Phil so he could become boss. But of course, in order for that to work out, Tony would need to go. It would raise too many questions if he didn’t immediately pop the man who’s supposedly responsible. Think about two things. First off, why didn’t Paulie want to take the Aprile crew until Tony threatened to give it to Patsy? Secondly, how did his assassins know that Tony was at Holztens? To answer the first question, we must state the fact that Paulie is ultimately the one responsible for launching the coup on behalf of Butch. Patsy is Paulie’s ally in the coup. But why would Patsy go along with a change in management? We all know he hates Tony, but that never stopped him from working with Tony through the entire show. It was the Aprile crew. Paulie offered Patsy the Aprile crew as a reward for going along. That’s why he didn’t accept it from Tony initially, it would send a bad message to Patsy if Paulie took the job that he promised to Patsy. It’s also why he took the job when Tony threatened to go to Patsy. Patsy would no longer have an incentive to go along with the coup and would likely sell him out to Tony. To answer the second question, look at everyone who knew where Tony would be. AJ, Carmela, and Meadow. Meadow is the weak link. She told Patrick, Patrick told his dad. Patsy was able to set things in motion from there.

One small complaint about the show I’ve had is that they didn’t show enough of the crime family. Like whenever they showed a captain, show him with a soldier or two. We know the Barese crew was the largest in the family but we only ever see Albert and Larry.

I think Patsy would easily take over specifically because of what happened in the last episode. 1. The marriage of his son to meadow leaves him with an almost royal claim to the position. 2. Paulie was extremely reluctant to take a position as capo. Being Boss would be totally out of his range physically.

Yes, Patsy is the most competent mobster left at the end of the series and also has useful connections. Paulie is too much of a loose cannon and lacking in intellect, Benny, Little Paulie, Walden etc are lightweights. Sil would take over as boss (despite his issues when he had a stint whilst Tony was in a coma) if he got out of his coma, but that's unlikely.

Even during the filming of the show he was in trouble in real life for robbing people in his neighborhood. I think AJ would originally seek to avenge his father but his lack of connections and general incompatibility with mob life would stop him. I can see Paulie and any other NJ crew members keeping AJ from joining up either out of respect for his father and or general apathy for AJ's plight with the only exception being little Carmine. AJ does work for him after all and he'd eventually turn to Carmine for help but I think being a fellow son of a mob boss Carmine would be less likely to get AJ connected and instead impart some wisdom about letting go of his anger and keep out of his fathers line of work. The tone of their talk would be like the paper crown conversation he had with Tony.

Even if he came out of it, there was no way he came out of it as soon as Tony died. Someone would take the mantle, and after Sil wakes up he may retain his position, but life moves on and a different crew takes over, so Sil may be demoted back to just being a Capo, or just a normal made soldier.

At the end of the series AJ has a job working for Little Carmine's production company but its obvious that job is just a favor to AJ based on who his father is. If AJ doesn't have that job anymore he's not really qualified to do anything else, which would force him to try to pretend to be a gangster which he clearly isn't qualified to do.

I think that Larry Barese would have taken over. He was friendly with everybody, including New York. Plus he had the largest crew of anybody in New Jersey. Paulie and Patsy would end up as capos. It's hard to predict what AJ would do, but he would probably end up like Jackie Jr. trying to fill his father's shoes as the heir apparent, but failing miserably and getting killed or shut out.

I think in the immediate aftermath, the position of boss would have gone Paulie. My reasoning for this is that he was at that point the most senior and respected member of the DiMeo family. Having known and worked with Tony the longest, while also having a similar aggressive, alpha male temperament. He could easily have taken the top spot. Paulie however is more of a street level person and not a good planner or big picture guy like Tony. So I think when it comes to running the family, he might have gotten Patsy to become the new Sil, and relied on him to help with the more mundane stuff that comes with being a boss. So while Paulie personally leads shakedowns, hits and meeting and greeting his soldiers and associates, Patsy would be working the books and coming up with new money making operations for Paulie and the other capos to execute.

Several things to unpack: Meadow: She’s the boy Tony should’ve had. Meaning she’s his heir, but its not going to be accepted because she’s a woman. Tony was always doting of her, they read each other better than anyone else knew them, etc. At the end of the show, her “Struggle to parallel park”. shows us a few things: 1. There’s a parallel between Meadow and Tony (She’s also parallel to the restaurant) 2. It’s not a struggle to park, she’s learning to fit in or, find her ‘Place’. Take note of how fast she learned but, was a second too late. Paulie He’s tried a couple times to backstab Tony, but he’s not smart enough. He’s been around long enough and he’s respected but, everyone knows he doesn’t have the brains. Respectfully. Patsy: He set Tony up and possibly with the help of Furio. Patsy os smart but, his need to avenge his brother and his spite make him a worthy contender for the culprit and future boss of the family. Until Meadow makes her move. *Cue Sopranos Theme Song

Great video. I have been thinking about this for a long time. Boss - Larry Barese (could be from jail but had the largest crew and remained unscathed in terms of people getting killed throughout the season. Underboss/Street Boss/Barese Crew Captain - Albert Barese, Consigliere - Patsy Parisi (he really does not get the credit he deserves and he is very level-headed minus the whole peeing in Tony's pool incident, whatever happened there), Captains - Paulie Gaultieri (Aprile/Soprano Crew - the only way I see Paulie going along with taking out Tony is that he takes over the two largest money makers - Construction and Garbage), Walden Belfiore (Gervasi Crew), Tony Maffei (J Soprano/Bacalliari Crew), not sure who takes over the Curto Crew. If Sil recovers he would be Consigliere and Patsy could be a captain. Thats all, I've said my piece.

There were clues Paulie knew something was up towards the end of the final episode. It was poorly executed but the scene with just Tony and Paulie sitting outside the pork store gave it away. What people forget is only the pilot and finale episodes were directed by one particular individual (hence why so contrived) with every other episode directed by another particular individual. The same individual had a leading hand in the dumpster fire that claims to be the Tony Soprano origin story movie (Saints Newark) which was also poorly executed.

It was Patsy who had Tony whacked, on the orders of Paulie, who was actually a mole for Butch, who would be in charge of NY. We all know Paulie has long standing ties with NY that even Tony caught on to at one point. Why do you think he wasn’t targeted when Phil launched the first attack? It was their plan all along to have Paulie become the new boss. But Phil underestimated just how hungry his underlings were. Butch used their enemies to get rid of Phil so he could become boss. But of course, in order for that to work out, Tony would need to go. It would raise too many questions if he didn’t immediately pop the man who’s supposedly responsible. Think about two things. First off, why didn’t Paulie want to take the Aprile crew until Tony threatened to give it to Patsy? Secondly, how did his assassins know that Tony was at Holztens? To answer the first question, we must state the fact that Paulie is ultimately the one responsible for launching the coup on behalf of Butch. Patsy is Paulie’s ally in the coup. But why would Patsy go along with a change in management? We all know he hates Tony, but that never stopped him from working with Tony through the entire show. It was the Aprile crew. Paulie offered Patsy the Aprile crew as a reward for going along. That’s why he didn’t accept it from Tony initially, it would send a bad message to Patsy if Paulie took the job that he promised to Patsy. It’s also why he took the job when Tony threatened to go to Patsy. Patsy would no longer have an incentive to go along with the coup and would likely sell him out to Tony. To answer the second question, look at everyone who knew where Tony would be. AJ, Carmela, and Meadow. Meadow is the weak link. She told Patrick, Patrick told his dad. Patsy was able to set things in motion from there.

Thats if he really is dead. The entire base of the sopranos is a look into someone like tony to see if he really could change. The answer is no. And once his psychologist gave up on him, the series ended. His journey of bettering himself is dead. The ending made me annoyed at first but once i sat and thought about it, it was the best ending they could have. They didnt fill it with a cheesy happily ever after or the satisfaction of killing tony.

I could see this changing but with Tony Dead or alive in order to maintain control the Family would need to add trusted stability at the top and if Tony was dead that would be even more of an issue. Larry has his legal issues but has still maintained a lot of influence and respect for a long time and being captain of the biggest crew in the Family would have to be one of the most legitimate cases to be made for a big say. He has Albert who is a consistent top earner. Thank you for mentioning Benny also. Benny a lot like his late friend and Captain Christopher was coming up more and more. He was trusted along with Walden to locate and kill Phil. The difference being Benny isn't being rushed up the ladder faster because of his family. He's keen, has the capability to be bumped up a couple of notches if Albert and Larry where to take control and give Benny a guiding hand I could see him rising to the task and avoiding many of Chrissy's mistakes. Paulie had already asked for time to mull over taking control of the family's biggest money maker. However, There's no way Paulie doesn't have big reaction to the death of Tony. I agree, if Sil Woke up then I see less issues with Him because they are dear friends and Sil would be the natural successor. I believe someone going back in the Family as long as Larry and his family having more influence could know that with Paulie it's the Ego. Call Paulie the most valued Captain with the most valued role and Tony wanted him there. Carmine Sr was called the last old style boss in New York. Tony proposed to Johnny Sack while saying it's Angelo's proposal to keep the peace. John, Little Carmine and Angelo. Power sharing situation. T says 3 of the other 5 families had that arrangement. I could definitely see Jersey going this road at least in the short term. If it's good enough for New York. I see Patsi getting moved up too As for the Soprano immediate family. As Tony makes clear when Carmella wants to invest in stock he knows it wouldn't stop with a sing!e stock. Carmella is smart but also has many flaws. One of which is judging with 1 hand and taking money with the other. I think she could do alright in business but the I can see her desperate to prove not only independence but show Standalone success and I don't think that would bode well. I like the idea of Janice potentially trying to groom AJ for the that world but can't see AJ ever being ready. I can see some failed attempts at it. Much like Little Carmine and the club scene I could see AJ doing well with his families wealth and influence but in the omerta? Meadow would be better suited. They are forgetting an important detail, Carlo. It's known that he's going to testify. If Tony hadn't died, he would probably have gone to prison for a long time, but the same applies to the others. This might be the biggest blow to the family, with top bosses facing charges. I've read about mafia indictments, and often, there can be 50 or more members/associates going to trial (the Colombo family experienced that). So, the family is in a pretty tough spot, giving New York a free rein.

Seeing her dad being killed (and potentially her mother and brother suffering wounds or dying) would be a something that may convince her to do that work. So here’s what I think may happen if she did that. Meadow is now determined to find out who killed her dad. She spends her free time looking up her fathers old contacts, perhaps even asking paulie? She tries to intern directly for the FBI/:state police legal department. But I don’t think that the cops would let her intern on Tony’s case-conflict of interest and mistrust? Also, would they even investigate heavily onto Tony’s death? Now how does meadow find out what happened? This I can’t say. I do t think she would be allowed to investigate Tony’s death. Nor would she have access into the new situation of the gang. Does she ask Patsi’s son, her new fiancé? How far is meadow willing to go? Knowing her I can’t say for certainty if she would seriously investigate correctly (because that would mean questioning Patrick). We do see meadow At times using the mob to get her way. Would meadow even suspect Patrick had Involvement? To us, it’s logically that Patrick. Not only knew details about the mob but that he was complicit in Tony’s death? Does meadow interview uncle paulie? Does meadow do what Carmela did-talk a big game to get distracted easily? As a way to assuage her conscience? If meadow does interview subjects within the mob, does she become a target.?

Honestly I'm a fan of the Paulie and Patsy team up with NY to take down Tony theory. My twist to the theory is that in the end Larry boy would be boss the same way DiMeo was "boss" from prison with Patsy as acting boss similar to Jackie in season 1. He made his share of errors/blunders during the series (botching the Leotardo hit before they went to war, pine barrens, the ginny sack joke drama).
