Sal Mineo was an amazing talent - he is missed - his sad demise was all about being in the wrong place and at the wrong time on the evening of February 12 1976- I've always had great sympathy for Elliot Mintz - this is a man who lost two such dear friends through such sheer random acts of violence - Elliot is too modest to say but this wonderful and caring man traveled all the way across the coast to Mamaroneck to comfort Sal's grieving mother Josephine in her time of need - just one day after his 31st birthday. Just four short years later - Elliot would make another long-distance flight to comfort another grieving close friend after her husband's senseless assassination -sadly - John Lennon and Sal Mineo were killed right in front of their apartment buildings whilst neighbors watched helplessly Thankfully - meditation and wisdom enabled Elliot to persevere through such trying times although even he must have been incredibly angered and disgusted by this cruel twist of fate - This random chaotic universe can be so cruel - Whenever i hear his voice -I always think of poor Sal crying out in the darkness - a knife plunged into his heart - dying alone in that car-port clutching a brown paper bag that contained a single piece of white cake wrapped in cellophane that he was saving later for his midnight snack - its beyond tragic - this was a caring and giving man who brought such joy to so many - his death was shrouded in such cruel and unwarranted speculation that sadly was all lies - a random senseless robbery gone awry - To quote one of his good friends - "Those who knew him - knew he loved life, that he lived his life with courage, with abandon, with humor, and with grace"

A great insight into the views and beliefs of a great man. Sal must count as one of the most underrated talents in the arts field. Elliot clearly knew the right questions to ask. Thanks for sharing this here.

Great interview. What a deep thoughtful person he was. You can tell he was very well read & self educated. I had read his bio recently and you so grow to like him as a person and get so frustrated at how Hollywood treated him that you really end up rooting for him. Even though I remembered how he died, the ending was still so depressing. Finally found his soul mate and things seemed to be turning around career wise for him, for it to all be so senselessly and savagly taken away from him and us. It really left me sad. Some people might not get it, but it was actually like losing a friend. I felt bummed for some time for him after reading his story. Kudos to Michael Gregg Michaud for writing one of the most insightful bios I have ever read. You really get the sense of knowing Sal personally. Thank you Elliot for posting this great interview.

Greatly enjoyed listening to this interview ! A very intelligent & articulate conversation. I wonder what the "Brandon De Wilde story" was ? What a tragedy Mr Mineo's senseless murder was. Such an underrrated actor. Never heard such a long interview with him....a very articulate individual. THANK YOU so much for sharing this wonderful "blast from the past" with us !! :-)

I still think Sal would have been amazing portraying Father Karras in "The Exorcist." It would have turned everything around for him.

He is very unique in certain levels, he has a nice baratone in his voice it could be cigarettes, stay away from cigarettes, kids, it's not good for your throat. sal mineo is a true legend many young actors today's and tomorrow are looking forward to his looks, his milky smile, awesome body, many gay guys real want to be him, of course they knew him from fortune and men's eyes with the young Don Johnson. If he could've stayed in London to do episodes of the persuaders with Curtis and Caine or tv series like and mother makes three or do Shakespearean in court rye districts. Maybe he could've find a better neighborhood and have a wife children and a better persona then everything lived for. I want to direct the film of that gay comedy he started in Frisco icalled help, the cat is dead...

I was wondering the same thing ! Quite a fascinating and insightful interview. Had to be before 1976, since that was the year of his senseless murder in the car port area behind his apartment in the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles County.

The battle in the business has been the artists who are driven by inspiration and enthusiasm for a project and the business people who are driven only by money. That’s why about 5% of films are excellent and the rest are junk. I think the business will eventually be run by the artists making their own projects which is where it is heading. Then talents like Sal and Orson Wells ect will not have to spend their lives trying to get work while the no talented ass kissers will not be aloud on the set.
