You build a solid core via drafting and trading, and only after you have a solid team on cost efficient salaries do you go and sign high price FAs to put your team into the elite. Nobody can build a team around high price FAs. If you've got promising youngsters making next to nothing, play those guys. Reserve free agency for positions that can't be filled internally.

You had SO MANY stars and a hall of fame coach. You had Scherzer, Verlander and Senga for starting pitchers, you had Alonso, Lindor, Marte, Nimmo, McNeil and more with young star prospects in Baty and Alvarez and before getting hurt, top closer Diaz as well. You had that while the Yankees went with a coach who has yet to make the world series and a team of aging, injury prone lackluster players. The Mets have gone for it and failed. It makes no sense to spend big money on a need the Mets don't have. The Mets basically have no pitching staff and no imminent help in the minors. Yamamoto, at least one innings eater if not two and a stud reliever (Hader would be great) are the needs. That's $100 million per season for those four.

Lindor who in 22 set the mets record for most RBIs by a shortstop in a season and is really solid defensively, Alonso who has the mets two highest regular season home run counts, Jeff McNeil who hits above .300 almost every year and plays really solid defense in the infield and the outfield. Quintana who was really solid when he came back. The best closer in baseball, Francisco Alvarez who also did well during his first year up and wi continue to slug like crazy next year. More promising rookies in the pipeline. Didn’t even mention nimmo who’s also solid behind the plate and on the field. And what do the Yankees have? Because all I see is a team that didn’t know what to do with themselves when judge ran into that wall at dodgers stadium. Baseball isn’t the nba bud. You need more than one hitter and one pitcher to actually win. Judge only takes 1/9 of every ab and cole only pitches 20% of the games.

But Judge when he’s playing every game only has 11% of every bat for the team. And Cole only pitches 20% of every start. This isn’t like the nba where you can put just decent players around lebron and they’ll automatically be in the nba finals. You need to build a team around them. Something the Yankees have completely failed to do and don’t seem that intent on making the changes they need to do to make the team around them better. Notice one of the first moves they made this off season was putting Chavez back to hitting coach, him not being in that position hurt the team in 2023. As for Pete wanting to be a Met, he has a bunch of NY based charities he runs or works with, he was at the Rangers game the other night wearing a shirt that said "New York or Nowhere" I dont think this is about Pete not wanting to be a Met it never was, that was the media trying to create something to write about. Another fun fact is people are saying Stearns wants to trade Pete, how funny is it he was trying to acquire Pete last year at the deadline for the Brewers, u really think he wants to trade him?
