Kelley Jones' art isn't for everyone but it fits Batman well. His Batman is how Gotham especially the villians view him. I did love how Moench wrote Batman. He had the edge but knew when to be human.

Kelly Jones had a way to give us that satisfying "tweak" style into his art. I'm the kinda guy who likes hyper stylized drawings. Humberto Ramos for Spider-Man and Greg Capullo for Spawn are other examples of style I never get tired of. Not a lot of artists can pull of that hyper stylized look. Jim Lee doesn't have that "tweak" like others have, but I'll always love Jim Lee's art as well.

Ramos' art is one of the few positives to come out of Marvel these days. I also prefer the stylised look, going back to Mike Wieringo who was not quite as stylised at Ramos, but definitely made characters his own with very expressive faces and poses! I can appreciate the craftmanship of realistic drawings, but they simply don't do it for me, they don't "pop".

1:34 bro I love his take on Batman and wished that Batman looked like that more often. It really gives a demonic/vampiric, horror vibe to his look. Adding to his fantastical/mythical element. The Bat ears are the best part of it.

Reminds me of Gotham Knights, where one of the depictions of Batman made him look like a nightmarish shadow monster. It very much looks like a homage to Kelly Jones, and the gothic horror side that he brought to Troika.

Great video! Troika is a fun story and it’s cool to see a different direction for the Batman books after Knightfall. I also hadn’t made the connection with the new way of drawing the Batcave! I have to say I prefer the darker look.

Great job! The three main books have an informal crossover leading up to Contagion after this- I remember it being confusing because each title had a different subplot involving Gordon running for Mayor, and you had to get all three books to get the whole story!

The idea was nice, but the extremely different approaches and tones of the books ultimately worked against it.

Great video. I was expecting a shallow plot recap, but you actually were extremely in-depth about the things that mattered - I loved your attention to detail like the boot fins or the colors of the batcave! When I first read Troika I wanted to drop dead from boredom, but you've actually cast it in a new light for me.

i just finished knightfall, and i was not really interested in buying the full saga (other comics had higher priority and i am not made of money). Your videos are amazing in giving the full picture especially since not a lot of people are interested in exploring the depth of the knightfall saga (i feel like a lot of people jump on the bandwagon of hating 90s comics). So thank you for this amazing series of videos and seeing the depth and positive aspects of the series !!

yeah 70-up until knight fall Batman was my fav look. The tall lengthy Light Blue and Grey Batman was so amazing. It was awesome work for the Batman Red series but I couldn't get into that style for the main Batman storyline One offs and special edition stuff totally amazing but it was hard to get into the important character moments when you had art like that lol I REALLY got into Shadow of the Bat and Detective Comics more than the main story line just because god the art to me was so much better lol

I personally don't get some peoples problem with Kelly Jones' artwork. To me how Jones draws Batman is how Batman should look like. Batman looks horrifying, it's definitely a Batman you don't want to be in a dark room with. The Batman stories he draws look like gothic horror which if you ask me is how the Batman universe should look like. What's disgusting I saw someone who hated Kelly Jones's Batman yet he doesn't say anything negative about Frank Millers art in The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again when the art in those two books had a lot more problems as in the art in those two books were awful. Kelly's art on Batman is a masterpiece.

for some reason, when watching your videos about Batman, I have been able to notice that the vision you have about the concept of the idea of Batman seems to differ from many modern authors such as Zack Snyder or Tim Burton, even the little seen in the trailers of the Batman film Matt Reeves on Batman's way of being differs from Nolan's vision. but, in my opinion, Snyder, Burton and Reeves have come closer to the concept or idea of the character than Nolan could do because being objective, if Batman were real he would be a very dangerous psychopath. let's think for a minute that comics present us with the story of a little boy, son of a very important billionaire, who witnesses the death of his parents at the hands of a thief and that same night decides that he will dedicate his whole life to the idea of hunting criminals. he spends all his youth training physically and mentally to finally be ready for his crusade, only instead of choosing a costume similar to that of Zorro (the hero he admired as a child) he considers it a sign to choose a bat, a predatory mammal that inhabits caves and caverns that feeds on rats or other small animals. In short: he is a territorial predator who regards criminals as something less than insects that he has every right to hunt. Unlike Superman, Flash or Green Lantern, Bruce Wayne does not have a life outside of Batman to the point that all his friendships and family relationships are strongly linked to his life as a caped crusader before as Bruce Wayne, unlike Superman whose life staff revolves around Clark Kent and not his alter ego. Let's think about it for a minute, we are talking about a resentful billionaire who dresses up as a giant bat every night and goes out to hunt criminals whom he does not kill but tortures through punches, kicks and non-lethal weapons that generate psychological trauma. . Bruce Wayne has a code of not killing but I don't think it's because he considers life sacred but because deep down he feels a sadistic pleasure in hurting criminals. he may not smile when he damages them but it is almost certain that inside there is something similar to an orgasm when he breaks a thief's arm, let's remember that Batman is a very cultured man and he must have read about how thieves were punished in In the past, Batman does not kill because for him the most important thing is power, savoring that feeling of fear and impotence that criminals have because he suffered from fear and impotence as a child when he saw his parents die and he could not do nothing to prevent it. it is not a symbol of hope because it does not seek to improve Gotham City, it is not revenge because it does not seek to kill but it is not justice either, it is retribution, it is the burning desire to see the man who killed his parents cry like a scared child before his enormous figure of a nocturnal predator slowly approach him and when he has it in his possession he will enjoy it like never before because he is not a hero and not a crusader, he is a territorial predator who knows how to neutralize the competition if it gets into your hunting ground and no one, absolutely no one, is going to ruin your dinner. When Snyder added the detail that Batman branded his victims as if he were cattle, he didn't surprise or infuriate me because he seemed to me the most natural and expected part of Batman's personality. this is my interpretation of the bat man, I know that there are others who seek to praise the most heroic part, but to be honest I think that the reason why we love Batman is because he represents everything we want to be: a super intelligent billionaire, with a great car, a worthy enemy, beautiful girls around him, a demigod as a friend, a model image for a young man, respect and dependence on the authorities and being the best hunter in the area. at least that's my way of seeing batman

It's funny how people complain about Kelly Jones arts human anatomy yet Jack Kirbys art doesn't exactly have accurate human anatomy yet they don't view that as a problem. For the record I do love both Jack Kriby and Kelly Jone's artworks.

That's very true, it was bat's first time black, the completely black and embossed cover of 515 was my first view of it, and after a couple years of Mike Manley's art in crusade-knightsend going to this "wtf style bats" w/ Jones' art was too much of a clash of where batman was at narratively. It made Bruce look like a musclehead psychopath, I stopped following batman religiously with 515 and followed the new Azrael comic for a little bit, never went back to batman b/c of 515's art lol
