Hi Coach Mary! Where are you based?

This was very helpful, going to try it during my next session. I have a horrible habit of forcing the turns or getting frozen and unable to turn. Sometimes I end up pitching up onto my toe picks and either save myself by hopping around or have a nasty fall. I think "bend, up, bend" but still can't manage it. :(

Ooohhh I love the “pretty arms” portion at the end. 🤤 I practiced one foot turns the entire time I skated yesterday and they’re deceptively tricky. Thank you!

I'm getting into skating to support my daughter who is 3 and loves it so much. I want to take the exams with her. These videos are really helpful and even help me explain things to her, and coaches seem very pleased. My cutie went from zero to skating backwards and jumping, in a little more than one month. We're in a local sports club but can't afford personal trainers, so this is very helpful 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 The only thing I never know is how to breathe and to get a better feeling for my overall alignment. Maybe this will come in time. One can clearly see how confident you are in your movements. It's a reward to watch it. Wish you had some programs of yourself showing off your skills. I bet it's worth watching. 💕

Hi Mary! Thank you for a nice tutorial. It took me a while, but finally, after watching this, I understand and remember the difference between inside and outside 3 turn 😀 It can sound fooly, (I'm almost 40) that I didn't figure it out earlier, but I'm comming back to skating this year, after 20 years and, honestly, I never knew the terminology of the moves. I'd like to appreciate your teaching skills 👍 Wish you the very best into 2023! Greetings from the heart of Europe ❤️

This video came just in time! I was working with my coach on flips last week and he noted that I kept jerking my right leg when I do the 3turn with my left leg in preparation for the jump. So I have to breakdown my 3turns and really work on them again. I learnt 3turns the way you did it in the video (with my other leg tucked in), but for the flip jump the other leg is hanging out, so I find that a bit different and more difficult to control. This video is really really helpful. Thank you so much!

Finally got this after about 200 tries yesterday! Practiced at the wall. One thing that helped me was concentrating on how the raised foot/leg helped propel the turn. I could never figure out before how to propel myself around with just my arms! I also found that if I said to myself “step, lift, turn” in my head, it helped.

Sorry I should have covered this! If you look at the pattern on the ice, it makes a 3 :) the turn makes the middle line of the number 3.

that's the trickiest part! keep legs together after turning, don't rock up to the toe pick (scratching sound), practice lots of glides and edges alone

Recently got interested in Olympic figure skating, and this trick had me flabbergasted. The judges never even mentioned it outside vaguely complimenting "foot work". Meanwhile I'm wondering how its physically possible. Love the showcase~ maybe I'll find a rink to try learning some basics. Spinning on the ice looks like fun.

I can't get this! Where does the momentum or force come from to initiate the turn when you're on one foot?

You got this! It comes from the edge you’re creating on the ice and when you push onto the one foot

are your boots supportive and are the blades on correctly? you may also have stronger thighs/inside of your legs compared to your outer leg/glute muscles. stretching also helps!

When you start on an outside edge and you turn at the top of the circle, do you then switch to an inside edge? Vice versa?
@CoachMarySkating5 жыл бұрын
yes, you are correct! for 3 turns, the turn will change edge, but still stay on the same curve/circle :)

Hello Coach. I just discovered your tutorials and want to say thank you! They are clearly presented, and it is very helpful that you include video of doing it the WRONG way. I'm an intermediate level skater, trying to improve my basic skills - crossovers, transition forward to backward, outside edges, etc. but I am doing it on hockey skates. I probably should be on figure skates (I don't play hockey) but this what I own and what I learned on. I am very tentative on outside edges, esp. when skating backwards. Even moves such as a mohawk make me feel like I might fall over the front or back of the blade; figure skates just look more stable in that regard. Any insights or suggestions?
@TheLarryBrown Жыл бұрын
I also skate on hockey skates, but I plan to get figure skates. If you are learning figure skating, it's just a no brainer to get the correct skates. it's not just the toe pick. The rocker is also different, the blade is longer and flatter, and the heel of the blade extends past (behind) your heel giving you extra control. Tiny differences can make a big difference, why make something already hard even harder?
