Floor deflection must be known before you install your brand new Porcelain tile. If you have a plywood subfloor, and you want to install a ceramic tile on that floor, then you have to find out if it is strong enough, or stiff enough to support you new porcelain or ceramic tile. The minimum deflection for a ceramic tile floor is L360. If your floor does not meet the required deflection amount, the floor tiles can crack, come loose, you can have failing grout and in all likelihood, the tile floor will fail and need to be replaced in short order. In this video I describe how to determine if your floor is capable of supporting a ceramic tile, and the app I use to calculate the deflection of any floor by measuring the dimensions of the floor joists, the spacing and unsupported span of the joists. It is critical to know if the floor is sufficiently stiff to support a tile floor, this step should not be skipped and if the floor fails to meet the deflection minimum of L/360, measures can be taken to strengthen the floor structure to make it strong enough for porcelain tile.
