The house we lived in-when i read Salem's Lot-was in the middle of nowhere. The bathroom can only be accessed by going outside the front door. Half of one shower wall was a plate glass window to inky blackness. I usually shower in the middle of the night. Bought a shower curtain for that window the day after i read Salem's Lot.

When it does come to a more major Dresden book you want to talk about, I wouldn't mind if you do more spoiler-filled review of it, either in the main review or as an extra video. I can tell you that almost all of us who have already read/listened to the whole series just love to vicariously re-experience them through the eyes of a new reader, it'd be a joy for us if you went into more detail about how you enjoyed the beat by beat story details.

I love Dresden so much I listened to them all again in reverse order. I wasn’t intending to but I just kept starting the previous one. The foreshadowing even in the first books for events in the last is much more noticeable and reminds me of doing rereads of WoT and seeing how much was foreshadowed so early.

Hey there Daniel. I just read Salem's lot myself, and one of the reasons I loved it so much was because of it's amazing tie-ins to Dracula. In the introduction, King says he was trying to reimagine the story of Dracula in a small Maine town. I think studying Dracula in college allowed me to notice little structural and character similarities that I loved. What do you think?

@@nonfictionfeminist I Did and I agree that some of it is similar but there are differences as well such as the priest's storyline (and if you read the Dark Tower series by King the priest's story continues there. Its one of my favourite 'kingverse' storylines). The Marsden house also is different. Its history etc. But I do agree on the similarities too

Salem's Lot was the first King book I read and is still my favorite book of his. I agree it is on the slower side but has a great climax. You can just feel the mounting dread and the book gets closer to the end. I gave my thoughts on it in my review.

Busy with Salem's Lot, at page 200. Love it so far. I do feel in certain parts it does feel a bit slow, but still so captivating at the same time. You just get the feeling something is not right with the town and with some of the characters and I can't wait to find out. Think that is credit to Kings's ability to create tension and tone in his books.

I’m re listening to Dresden files for the 5th time lol I’ll take a break and listen to Salem’s lot. But really keep reading Dresden files and you’ll change ur mind about dark. And yes I agree that Jim is awesome at plot twist and down the line revelations like bits and pieces through out the books (yes there’s an s lol) and stuff that’s gonna be right in ur face the whole time and to be blown away when it’s revealed! As someone who's read Dracula, what do you make of the similarities? I've read Salem's Lot once and I found it too similar to Dracula. That said, I'm going to reread it to evaluate my stance, but I've read Dracula often enough that I just thought Stephen King was taking too much from it

Salem’s Lot isn’t King’s best, but it’s certainly my favorite of his. I agree with the pacing but the slow burn into an explosion really does it for me. There’s a lot of very interesting vampire-related wordplay and foreshadowing that occurs during the first half or so, and it’s really interesting to pick up on that during future read-throughs. I read it every October :D

Salems’ lot was my first King’s book, and it took me some time to get into it, but once I got into it... omg I loved it 😀. I remember thinking that it was the first time reading a book where so many characters just started to die like flies 😂. Great book!

I agree, the Salem's Lot was easy to start, and it was suspenseful and the buildup was slow but more like a good stew simmering slowly to perfection, much like Needful Things. I devoured the book. It was all sorts of awesome!

Love the show, This is my second least favorite of the books because there are some things that don’t make sense in-world. But as far as character development this is a great book. Dead Beat is my favorite, the books from after Proven Guilty up to Changes is an amazing 5 book high point of the series. It’s amazing and I am very confident you will have a great time reading them over the next months.

A King book I think gets overlooked sometimes but I thought was great in that Stephen King way is Desperation. Check it out if you haven't, but don't worry with the mirror story Regulators he wrote under Richard Bachman it's nowhere near as good

Salem's Lot was actually my 2nd King book I read and it sold me on him more than The Gunslinger did. I'll say I was bored in the first half but once things started to click for me what the book was about metaphorically and the little character connectsions throughout the lot started to pay off the book comes into focus as a staggeringly well constructed story, especially for a 2nd published work.

I recently read "Salem's Lot" as an introduction to King; except I'd just read 'On Writing' only weeks earlier, so whenever King broke his own 'rules' it stuck out like a sore thumb to me. So many adverbs! I liked some of the characters (Ben, Susan, the teacher) and King did a pretty fantastic job bringing the town to life. My biggest gripe was that I really did feel like the book meandered. A lot of the time when things were getting interesting or I was becoming invested in a character, I'd be introduced to a dozen new townspeople just going about their day for like 50-100 pages. I understand what he was trying to do - and it's highly ambitious - bit it killed the pacing for me at times. I almost felt like he tried to be just a little more literary with the material than required, but without going so far as to truly make it stand out. It could've been a great americana classic with vampires, but to me, it was neither quite that nor quite a tense horror story. It sat a little uncomfortably inbetween. Ironically, I also didn't feel like The Lot was done any favours by me having read Bram Stoker's Dracula not long before. The plot in King's book is (intentionally) very similiar, which in a way is kinda cool: it reads a bit like a modern sequel. However, with some exceptions, it's just not as scary to me. Make of that what you will. I remember "Let the Right One In" by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist as far more tense; but that's one of those books that are due for a re-read before I sing its praises! Overall, "'Salem's Lot" had a solid idea with decent execution. But I have to say I'm a bit apprehensive to read more King. Pet Sematary's the other one I've got.

Daniel, if you have not read it, you need to read King's Different Seasons. It is not a novel but an anthology of four short stories/novellas. They are Hope Springs Eternal, Summer of Corruption, Fall from Innocence, and The Winter of Our Discontent. These, in my opinion, are his best encapsulating story and character work. All four have been turned into incredible movies, namely Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption..

(Slightly spoiler remark) Salem's Lot is one of the scariest books I've read. I read it in 1978 or 1979 and still some scenes haunt me. An example would be when they look under the trailer and see a pair of work boots, fuzzy slippers and baby shoes.

Lol Salem's Lot was the first Stephen King book I read. Loved it. Though it has been...many years since. Also, Cycle of the Werewolf was fun. Not a well-known King short novel with comic art.

I think once you've read small favour you should go back and read the ones you didn't enjoy so much. The payoffs for Summer Knight and Blood Rites is huge in the later books.

just read it, it's a slow burn the first 4 chapters were boring to me, not lacking action tho,king was everywhere describing way too much before we could relate or care, I also hate the plot wholes and motives, but it picked up pace quickly after that ,the story itself feels a bit filled with unimportant stuff and turns out very simple with big spotlights on a few moments, my favorite moment is when he talks randomly about the townspeople and their sins, I love how he describes vampire's stares and smiles, the main character is WEAK, i love jim and mike ,even the main girl were more interesting than ben, the ending is very unsatisfying and unlikely, I rather make the fire happen there than in the past but it was good I would rate it 6.5 out of 10
