What I love most about Changes is it feels like a season finale while laying groundwork for the next season. Butcher was able to wrap up a lot of plotlines in Changes (and to a lesser extent Turn Coat) and also give you just taste of what I am assuming is the end game for the series (you see this the most in Cold Days). Amso totally agree with the ramifications. Next part is spoilery! My favorite quote from Butcher is his direct response to Changes having a cliffhanger, in which he disagrees in the most Jim Butcher way arguing cliffhangers leave the plot hanging and he says "Harry's daughter is kidnapped and he will die to get her back. And does. The end" 😂😂😂

I am glad you finally got here, welcome. And once you finish with this series i would recommend another "The Iron Druid Chronicles" it isnt as good as dresden, but it operates in a similar kind of world, somewhere halfway between Dresden and American Gods

One of my favorite series. I re-read the entire thing at least every other year, sometimes more often than that I just went back and watched every Dresden review you had, and it's been interesting watching your thoughts change/evolve. I was sorely tempted to try to write on several of the other reviews, but I was unsure how much of what I wanted to say was due to knowledge I had of books you hadn't read yet. Evidently, a lot of it, and you clearly already get what I wanted to say. The climax of this book was astoundingly well done. Those three (four?) sentences broke me, and I had to step away from the book for a few minutes to get my emotions back under control so I could finish the book. Then at the end, my jaw hit the floor. I can't wait to see what you think of the remaining books, and I'm SUPER jealous that you are only going to have to wait a few months to get Peace Talks, where many of us have been waiting years. One more edit: One thing I find really interesting about the writing in Dresden Files, is when you read Butcher's Codex Alera series, and compare those release dates to the Dresden Files release dates. He clearly learned a lot about writing while working that other series, and it greatly benefited the Dresden Files.

I would say that the arc between White Night, Small Favor and Turn Coat is Dresden as a private detective at its peak, I know someone who has started the books at Turn Coat and fell in love with it from there. My pick for the top 3 pre-Changes, is Dead Beat, Turn Coat and Changes although my favourite novel is pretty much always the latest one; Skin Game and soon Peace Talks I hope.

Don't forget that Harry wasn't the target of the bloodline curse. He was just going to be happy collateral damage.

you can't forget the short stories! they add views into the supporting characters that is really just extra flavor to this delicious literary meal.

Dude you thought changes was bonkers, wait till cold days and skin game !!!!! There is a reason why I've stuck with this series since high( totally an accident that I found it) I've preordered peace talks and am already saving up for the next one !!! Thank you Jim. And to all the Dresden heads ""Wile E. Coyote" I said to him soberly . "Suuuuuuper Genius !!!!"

I love seeing your journey through Dreseden Files. And your recanting of past books and the series in whole. Ive gone through the series about 6 times now. Anxiously waiting for Peace Talks

I love your review!! Makes me reminisce when I finished it the first time. I went through the exact same emotional rollercoaster you did. The Dresden Files are a drug that gets you hooked with interesting books at first and then draws you in entirely and by changes there is no f****** way you’d put it down. No way. Dresden is life. Hail the Za Lord!

I hope Daniel sees this, I became a follower/fan of you and your reviews from when your review of Cursed the show. And now anything I want to read or get into I check on your reviews. I’ve been a fan of Jim and his books for awhile but your voice resonates with mine so well in this series. Thank you for your time and getting me into WoT. I worked with Josha on a project and was ecstatic when he told me he was cast in the show. Keep making videos. Love them.

Aye, I too was happy to go into the "badlands" with Harry and the gang. Messing with Harry's daughter was an extremely bad idea, lol.

I think part of the point of the reveal is that it DOES come out of nowhere. It hits Harry square in the face and all he can do is go to Mac's and drink. This event is so huge and earth shattering that MAC of all people SPEAKS A WHOLE PARAGRAPH. So I actually think that the twist at the beginning needs to come out of nowhere because it's from Harry's POV

There's a certain delightful mixture of satisfaction and shellshock from this one, yeah :P It's a real surprising-yet-inevitable moment, and makes you appreciate the series-wide story arc that just finished a key act.

I'm so happy you're super into Dresden now. I've read through this series three times now...it's weirdly like comfort food, regardless of the dark bits. In the future, if you get a chance to hear them on audiobook, narrated by James Marsters, you're in for a real treat.

I just cant wait to see what you say about everything that happens after ghost stories, because that was just a teaser of how deep the changes go. And now I need to re-read again.

I started with Turn Coat as I needed a audio book for a very long drive years ago and I was walking around a Boarders just trying to find something. I took a shot in the dark and Turn Coat seemed interesting compared to the rest of my options. I was hooked and went back and started from the beginning.

I cant wait to see your reaction through the rest of the series, and hopefully I can find some other great books to read when I go through your older videos.

In my writing I’m hoping to do a Kings of the Wyld style comedy & dnd party & world flavour Mixed In with more Sanderson Epic world building, magic (obviously) & character depth & development. (With the biggest focus being on the group’s friendships) Would you recommend this series to me for inspiration as someone who doesn’t normally read modern urban fantasy?

HELL YES! In terms of weaving plot threads, Jim is massively under-appreciated.

There was foreshadowing in bloodrites, its in a conversation between Bob and Dresden about anchoring spells to bloodlines.

I swear, I can read the line (well, four lines) from the climax of Changes, and I still get emotional. Not even reading the entire book, just that short four-line snippet. Damn, this is a good series...
@TheCiroth4 жыл бұрын
Dresden did talk about what it would be like to be a parent a few times in the prior books, mostly when he waxes about his Mom and Brother. Everything Jim does to Harry, he foreshadows. For example, how many times did he tell us how Kincaid would what he did at the end of Changes. I am pretty sure I've figured out who Cowl and Kalmori are thanks to Turn Coat and what Molly said happened to Ana. I even think I know who was with Peabody on the island. The story is amazingly complex and if you don't pay attention to what Harry says, then you might just miss the warnings.
