Thank you for sharing. My adoptive father was born in Salina Kansas. Destiny crossed our roads with this wonderful man who taught me everything about the USA. We met in Houston when I was 18 years old and I took care of Nick until he passed in 1997. Now I am 58 years old, and I have this incredible desire to visit the place where Nick was born. Salina KS needs to know about this man who was a war hero. Captain of the air force and a POW who flew a bomber over the North Atlantic ocean destroying German U-boats. Nick and his confreres in wings were not alone in this bomber a 200 plus newfoundland dog flew with them. I hope one day I can share all Nick’s stories so it doesn't go forgotten.

Fascinating murals. I always drive through Salina, but haven't been in the downtown. Next time I come through, I will want to check it out.

Great video! Come back mid October for BOOM! Salina, and 15 or so new murals in town. The one on the old H.D. Lee Mill was done by Gudio van Helten and the Salina Kanvas Project.

That runway at schilling air force base is one of the longest in the country. I remember the owner of Virgin airways was there watching a light aircraft take off that went around the world on one tank of gas. Or it was solar powered. It had a real wide wing span. I also remember northwest airlines had 747s there. Teaching their pilots how to fly possibly. And DC 10s.

My son is a freshman at KW, so we made a couple of trips to Salina to check out the school and for him to move in. His coach drove us around town on the first visit and I really liked the vibe I got. It seems to be a neat small city with friendly people. Too bad they don't renovate the depot, it would make a great train museum.

I lived in Salina when I was 9-years-old - many moons ago. My father, who was in the Air Force, was stationed at Schilling A.F.B., which is now no longer in existance. We moved to Salina from my dad's previous military assignment in Alabama. I still remember the long road trip from AL to KS, and, after arriving in Salina, I remember thinking how different KS looked compared to AL. I'm referring to the landscape and the vegetation. I attended the 4th grade in Salina. After one year of living there, my father got reassigned and we moved overseas. >>> Now, I travel all around the country, and I sometimes travel through Kansas, including Salina. Best wishes to the good people of Kansas and Salina!l

There was a gas station that appeared in the 1979 movie up the academy. A real extreme old style gas station. I think it was on the hiway that goes n and south thru Salina diagonally thru the north part of town. I think we drove by it in the early 60s before I 135 existed. I sure like to see a picture of that.

I’ve always thought Salina has a really neat downtown. What I like most about Salina is that it’s kind of the hub of North Central Kansas. It’s like a large city, but with a small town vibe.

@bagspackedadventures5492 for the most part. At end of film. All it says is that it was filmed in Kansas. In Salina. Most scenes filmed at St Johns Military academy, Kansas Wesleyan school. And the airbase on South side of town...

The mural is by Guido van Helton. He did eight across the states, mainly smallish town, Fort Dodge, Fort Smith, etc. this was the first I saw and spent the last year searching them all. Salina is a neat town, not that far from my home in K.C. The downtown is coming back, it is going to be impressive when visitors start coming more often.

Having spent 18 years of my life in Salina, I have to share my favorite moment with you. It was a day in May, 1990 and I finally left Salina (and Kansas) for good. If you live in Salina and think it's great, you really need to see the world a bit and see what it's like to see a part of the world that has woods, hills and water. Salina Kansas is just too depressing.

I was born in Salina in 1935 and grew up there, my family owned about 1/4 of the houses there at that time, we sold them all and moved to California, Salina went down hill from there. And those murals are terrible and should be painted white over them
