this is the best ' SALLY ' on youtube by far. its the perfect tempo for this tune. the two leads always play the melody. the backup keeps everything in the groove, and complement the lead melody throughout. its perfectly miked so all the instruments are in balance volume-wise. just wonderful.

After hearing Jim Mills play "Sally Goodin", all I can think of is how close it sounds to Earl on the Foggy Mountain Banjo album. Excellent banjo picker!!!

Jim and Alan do have clean notation, all the while zipping it up with a little dissonance..great musicians.

I was thinking the same! I've had that album since 1960 on 33 1/3 rpm and Jim's playing is very similar. Also J. D. Crowe has a lot of Earl Scruggs in his style. J. D. said he use to go see Flatt & Scruggs when he was growing up starting in 1950 to study Earl. Earl discovered the three finger thing when he was 10 but Snuffy Jenkins was doing a version of it back then too plus Earl and Don Reno use to play together on weekends when they were young with the Morris Bros. Don had a unique style.

sweet! you got to play with Jim? He is soooooo awesome! He is absolutely my favorite banjo player second only to Earl Scruggs. He is truly an inspiration for me, and his version of Sally Goodin is downright kick-ass.

Good pickin', however, would have been much better in 'A'. I thought all groups had graduated from 'G' Sally Gooden, in 1930 that would have been acceptable!

Jim should work on his timing and maybe get a better banjo.
@HPNomad6 ай бұрын
Sure buddy, I’m sure the man who has more banjo playing accolades than you do needs to work on his timing and get a better banjo. Are you challenged?
