Sally Weintrobe speaks to XR Greenwich on the topic of Climate Grief.
“Most of us have been living in a bubble of disavowal about global heating”, Sally Weintrobe writes. “We were aware it was happening, but we minimized its impacts. What might people be feeling as they emerge from the climate bubble?”
No-one is better qualified to discuss these questions than Sally, a founder member of the Climate Psychology Alliance and chair of the International Psychoanalytic Association's Climate Committee, whose new book, Psychological Roots of the Climate Crisis: Neoliberal Exceptionalism and the Culture of Uncare, has just been published.

I saw the entitlement she is talking about when I engaged in my climate listening project. Many people echoed the sentiment that "I should be able to do whatever I can afford to do. No government should be able to limit what kind of car I drive, or how much fossil fuels I choose to use. If I'm able to earn the money I should be able to spend it how I choose." They considered that a right. They admired wealthy people, and felt they were superior because they were lucky enough to be born rich, smart enough to become rich, or clever enough to game the system to get rich.

@terencefield3204
@terencefield3204 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidmchugh-hypnotherapist7213 There is no such thing as the economics of infinite growth. There is an intractable physical reality of an ever increasing now global-scale industrial, distribution, resource consumption and demand-creating super machine of a scale and complexity that is both uncontrollable by discrete decision making, and is certainly vastly too complex for humans beings to understand and become masters of. The old silly Marxist neo-this and neo-that childishness are both untrue as descriptives, ( the scrofulous old fool was profoundly wrong to begin with) and suggest nice, neat, simple ideas like 'equality', social redistribution', expropriating from the 'rich' to 'solve' the issue of climate change. Half a century ago or more, if there had been a rational approach to the stewardship of he world, rather than letting the systems rip, there could have been an inclusion of 'fairness', 'social responsibility ' and all that good stuff, but not now. It would be counter productive, and would now add to the rate of heat acceleration. Happy to tell you why if you care to know. but it would outrage the preconceptions of any left thinking people. Like you perhaps, Wrong wrong and wrong again. SO profoundly irrelevant in false analysis and thus irrelevant in consequent approaching suggestions to TRY to slow the acceleration towards mass death. You, and it seems she are also captives of modern and in my view plain juvenile and simple ideas with roots in the mis-analysis of events that took place two centuries or more ago. I really do not think you left-liberal types even begin to understand the physical reality of rapidly accelerating global warming and the changes resulting from it. It always seems the left 'sees' this reality they misunderstand in order to 'bolt on' odd soci - political 'solutions' that half an hour's analytical review dismisses as irrelevant at best. You may accept there is a problem, unlike some - far from all - on the right but you have no analysis that makes any sort of sense. IMO. If you do not grow up and deal with your emotions when confronted with stupidity in the face of probable mass death, I can only assume you are either deeply deranged, or on psychotropic drugs. A bit of hypnotherapy, feel-good socialism, making the deranged amoral super-consuming rich give up their habits and increasing the living standards of the vast growing hordes of the destructive poor ( and do NOT tell me that they are not) will not get you out of this! It will simply make the disaster happen even earlier!!! I am emotional. So should you be, but then you may be just another english middle class AR. alienation is a symptom of moral conflict which is neccesary to assist the demise of the captalist ideas. Marx's contemporary ideas form the metaphor for our learned knowledge of classical tradition. Indeed the idea that social and political theory can be underscored by neoliberal principles is within the globalist sense anathema to the paradoxical view we rely on the welfare state and the middle classes to exploit migrant labour to achieve our dream of socialist hegemony. Globalism is the driver to achieving a socialist state so we should rejoin the EU.

We need to be careful that our climate grief is nothing but an expression of idiotic entitlement. Down all the days there was grief aplenty but those of us in clover, in wine and roses, were satisfied. Suddenly we are impacted directly and out come the serious faces. A profound nihilism is the only moral avenue open to those with honesty and integrity at their core. Park your entitlement and walk into this dying world with your head high and your eyes wide open.

The film is good at exploring and expressing the grief and the hilarity of our predicament. It's personal too. We all have family that doesn't quite get what we're on about. The film gets into that. One is far better off to face squarely into their anguish and grief over the climate catastrophe and rapidly approaching extinction. To a "normal" person that awakens to the horror we are now in, it causes immense grief, sadness, guilt, anger, and fear to arise. One should allow one's self to sink fully into these emotions. Allow the emotions to overcome you and simply feel them. This process will take months. You will then start purging these emotions through our natural built in grief process (see Kubler-Ross). By doing so, one will not only feel better but more empowered to cope. At this time, people should accept the inevitability of our death and our mortal nature as humans, even as we fight for life and for climate justice. By working through our emotions and grief we will also rediscover our eternal spiritual nature, where is the place that true Hope arises. Earth will survive and she will replenish herself with new life and new species. She is a living Being...our Mother. She has overseen the extinction and regeneration of life 5 times in her history. We will survive also and will live to see another day and a brand new Earth and life. Homo Colossus is going extinct...it must. This type of human is an imposter and must die along with their false religion of neoliberalism, so that homo sapiens can survive and thrive once again. Peace and love.

Religion, spirituality, and psychotherapy all make the illusory sense of the separate self feel better, but only for a little while. Homosapiens were hunter-gatherers for some 800,000 years living in relative harmony with the ecosystem. These tribes lived communally where any sense of a separate individual became a potential threat to the entire group, for the needs of the collective could be compromised. Therefore, even in those few remaining hunter-gatherers groups today, any sense of psychopathic/narcissistic behavior could get one disappeared on a hunting trip. Once sedentary societies emerged some 10,000 years ago along with plant and animal agriculture, the belief in a separate self, I, or individual me was allowed to emerge and flourish. As a result, not only did the accumulation of material wealth begin but so did hierarchies and inequality that stratified the social structure creating a false sense of individual specialness or exceptionalism. Therefore, it was apparently the advent of civilization itself that seemingly created the social structure separating individuals psychologically. If there wasn't the belief in this illusory self-energy, life would not be taken personally and self-imposed suffering would not even exist. Feelings, emotions, pain, and suffering, etc. would still happen though, except it would be for no one. The recent book Civilized to Death by anthropologist Dr. Christopher Ryan is a good read, plus books by Jared Diamond and Paul R. Ehrlich are also recommended in understanding the human condition.
@AndreasDelleske
@AndreasDelleske 3 жыл бұрын
If we are silent, we can see that feelings and thoughts are not what we are and the separation dwindles. Upanishads know this but there were very few who dropped into it consciously. We can "only hope" for this happening more. Be quiet, no effort. What you perceive is not you, but then: Who are you? There will be an answer but it can not be described. There is no one here anymore and it is quite a relief. However, with empathy comes grief. As anything else, it is not permanent. Verifiable facts are still verifiable facts, there is nothing supernatural. All is ever open. Be the witness, things get cared for. The will be action but there is less and less of an actor. Ego is not a problem because ego itself is an illusion.

What happens differently when ppl not only accept their fate - as indeed at some point we all must do - but accept in the context that it's humanities fate. How will ones' altruism/selflessness, or heedless/selfishness change? When hope is gone - and this is finally universally accepted - what on earth is gonna happen? (Imho) it's gonna be brutal beyond belief, as there's no point in hoping for better ..as hope is gone. All previous advanced civilizations have collapsed as is self-evident; therefore it follows, all advanced civilizations would have encountered exactly the same feelings. Was it good while it lasted? Don't we see that books like the one she wrote are part of the problem? All these writers and so called experts pass off their own peculiar way of thinking as truth, and millions of such books are written every year, all in contradiction with each other, causing this great epistomological confusion, leading us to the present state of most human beings - with a head full of opinions but no real certainty that there is truth, let alone what that truth might be. Many cease to believe in truth, thinking there are instead just contradictory opinions - while argument is not a means of reaching truth but a process of asserting one opinion against another. What is truth, actually? Truth is what is. Why have an opinion about what is? You either see what is or you don't. Why do we need opinions at all? To know when you don't know is far closer to truth then to think you know because you've got an opinion. If we didn't have so many books and writers and 'experts' and political ideologies we would be left with what is, and seeing what is clearly, we would be closer to the truth - so long as we didn't form opinions about what is. Opinions distort perception, and the opinions of another, passed off as somehow authoritative, are the most distorting factors in modern civilization which infantilises us by suggesting that there are experts on everything and we ought to consult them on everything from our own moods and psychological disorders to the solution to climate change. Everyone has an opinion about what to do with regards climate change, unfortunately, and arguing about it prevents us getting together and creating solutions (as does XR, which clings to one violent method which depends influencing a government machine that consistently proves itself ineffective, presupposing the efficacy of this method despite evidence to the contrary but that's another matter.) You should get together and discuss, create novel solutions to the problem of climate change rather than cling to one method that alienates the public and construes those that care about climate change as extremists.
