I personally think that the most recent art of Ridgeside blends vanilla quite well than most mods. Most portrait reworks, although some are good yet don’t fit the characters that they’re portraying.

Sounds perfect for me! So ive played stardew for a good while now but have yet to make it past the first summer. Due to various things making me reset the game. I won't go into detail. But let's just say mods and generally messing things up. I wanted to get through the base game before touching huge expansion mods such as this and SVE. But I just can't stand the wait anymore. I wanna know what they're like. So doing both at once for the first time. Probably gonna get overwhelmed. But Don't care. Gonna be fun.

I'm a bit late to the party, but you might want to consider East Scarp, plus some of the optional NPCs. There are extra storylines, but not as complex as those in RSV.

Been using the RSV for a while, not fully explored it (have a bad habit of restarting), Lorenzo is a great one to get to know to learn about your grandma. He does give something you should sleep with to get a special cutscene (the other use for that item ill let people figure out). I have a habit of marring Alissa but that could change when they add Blair into the mix lol, Flors a nice one to marry as well.

I use my Switch for Stardew too, but I also have the PC version. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to get mods to work. My SMAPI is so uncooperative. It was too frustrating and I gave up 🤷🏻‍♀️

I played this when I was in year 4 too, It's honestly so weird to play this mod when you are like 4 years in your save file Because as soon as you enter the village you'd get bombarded with a cutscenes that is supposed to be emotional but then at this point I don't even know the chars yet but they for some reason know you lmao Regardless, good mod though!

East Scarp, RVE, Mineral Town, Durins Rest, Stoffton, Fostoria are a lot of fun and of course the Deep Woods for more dungeon action and Boarding House for extra animals :D

I've only just recently gotten back into Stardew after almost three years of not playing (last time was pre-Perfection, pre-island, like early 1.2-ish in late 2018), and am almost regretting doing so knowing how addictive even vanilla Stardew without mods is. So far, I've been sticking to just cosmetic and a couple of quality-of-life mods like UI Info Suite and Cuter Animals, with the only truly game altering mod being Skip Fishing Minigame. One day, I may put this mod in my Stardew folder. Today is not that day.

I know this is two months ago, but I didnt like this mod for a few reasons: I was combining it with SVE and the RSV NPCs just arent as good as the SVE or vanilla NPCs. The vanilla NPCs dont ever acknowledge the other villagers, I especcially didnt like the flower dance, they are 100% separated and I did not like that. The town is pretty damn vanilla and I liked the town. The portraits are pretty ugly if I am honest. There is no extra dialogue mod, I hvent had any New dialogue in the first few days. The vanilla npcs never go up to the RSV, bu the RSV Villagers do go down to the Valley. Anyways those were some reasons I removed it.

Ridgeside is the pinnacle of expansion mods, honestly. Expanded is all good stuff and East Scarp is intriguing, but Ridgeside is crazy good. The writing is spot-on (mostly) and all of the quests & events happening in the town are great additions. Unlocking the Summit Farm was, in all honesty, one of the coolest things I’ve ever done in Stardew Valley, as was the Hike Trail Greenhouse. Have you looked at Lunna: Astray in Stardew? It wasn’t my cup of tea and I honestly deleted it after completing the main quest, but it could serve to be an interesting comparison point since it was created by the same guy.

What works for me is the Back to Nature ReShade mod for Stardew on Nexus, it is a general reshade of the game that you can adjust if you want, and it works on the entire game, no matter which mods you have or don't - so it's not for specific areas or expansion mods like, say, DaisyNiko's recolor.

Does mods automatically update or do you have to re-download them? If you need to re-download them, does it save your progress with that mod?

You do have to update them manually, but assuming the mod author keeps their manifest updated, the smapi log should tell you when they need to be updated. Unless it's a major update that changes underlying code, the vast majority of updates will be compatible with each other, so it most likely will NOT break your save. Just check the mod description/changelog first if you're worried Edit: if you use a mod manager like curseforge, it should auto-update, but a lot of mods aren't available there yet. Vortex might auto update too, but I can't quite recall. I have no problem maintaining my 100+ mods manually
