Quality video and love the way you step through the options, even if you have a different preference. I’m also a huge fan of your budget friendly gear recommendations. I know I prefer a variety of rods and reels and it’s easier to accomplish that when the setup is under $200.

Do you have any problems with line twist when you use spinners without a swivel?

M SN - Thank You, and I agree, I’d prefer to have a variety of “mediocre” rods over 1 or 2 expensive rods. I’m rough on my gear and prefer being able to toss my rod on the ground if I need to without giving it a second thought. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $100 on a rod or reel.. there are plenty of budget friendly options out there that will get the job done. I get asked a lot about whether or not I use weights and what kind of braid, etc, so it was nice to just cover what I’ve been getting asked about, especially with coho and chinook fishing picking up. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Rod type for me would totally depend on the season im fishing. When spring salmon are running im usually fishing the river for summer steelhead and the river i fish is medium width with lots of space and long runs and a steelhead rod (8-12lb-ish) works perfectly fine and I've never had an issue...however when im targeting fall salmon on the coast I wouldn't even think of taking a 8-12lb rod. Coastal river, narrow in spots, super rocky/snaggy, short runs, lots of debris fish will run for to hide when hooked...the salmon I've caught gave me fits with a 10-20 rod and you would be best outfitted with a rod you can put the brakes on a 20-30lb or bigger fish. 12-25lb rod is what i use...80lb braid main line and 40lb mono leader. 50-65lb braid works ok but the sharp coastal river rock ledges cut braid so fast!

One thing I would have added is differentiating spinning rod and reel from casting setups. When you mentioned the casting reel without the rod, some beginners might throw the casting reel on the spinning rod.

@@AnglingAddictsPNW, exactly. Plus, if you wreck one, it's not the end of the world. For example, when I go to Barview jetty, I move around _a lot,_ and even though I try to be careful, my poor rods can take a beating. Those boulders snack on them.

Hey Lance! I just finished getting your order together. Since there is no mail pick up today it will be in the mail tomorrow (tues) and you should have it the following day. I've always been a big fan of the blue fox spinners, I just didn't like how hard it was to get them deeper in the water, that's why i started making the bullet spinners. Though i do still fish with blue fox every now and then... I wish i had some of this type of info when i started fishing as well lol, i could have saved myself a few years of struggling to figure things out, but honestly i think trial and error was the way to go over someone telling me how to do something. Time on the water, in my opinion is the most important thing of all.

Awesome videos and you are obviously living the dream. I would like advice. Trying to get into Salmon fishing. I met a fellow fisherman willing to help teach me, but as far as the equipment they can only say they have a 9'+ Heavy / Fast Action Pole. I think I found what I want to use and I am trying to marry it up with a reel. This is what I am looking at and could use some sage advice. To me they seem to have similar features. - Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier 2 Spinning Reel - PQF4000 on sale now $48.99 - Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel - PRESSP40X - AMZN $69.99 I'm still flipping back and forth between a Okuma SST 9'9" Heavy / Fast Action Cabelas $99 or Okuma Guide Select Pro 9'9" Medium / ??? Action On Sale $109

@AnglingAddictsPNW Жыл бұрын
That Pflueger PressP40X is well worth the money. I still have a couple of them. They were my go-to reels for quite some time. As for rods, I don’t think a heavy rod is the way to go. A medium is much better. It will work better for different setups. Though it’s a bit more, the guide select pro would be a better investment in my opinion.

I am posting this for the beginner with limited funds: I fish all salmon in the Skeena watershed with a moderate action 10'6" 15-25 lb Fenwick HMX and an Abu 6500 C3 reel spooled with 60 lb braid. This and versions of it are a super common setup in the PNW and the only thing that changes throughout the season is my braid-to-mono leader or rig (plunking, snagging, whatever). I'll tie on 3-8 foot of 20 pound mono with a double uni knot for coho this week. Don't get caught in the details, just buy equipment that covers your bases and focus on your technique. For spinning rods I really like the affordable 8'6" 8-17 lb Shimano Scimitar (

Nick, at Barview a few days ago a guy just down from me landed a magnificent 30" wild coho on a blue spinner. It was both sad and hilarious; no one around could decide whether it was legal or not, only because ODFW's website is so absurdly useless. And I have two advanced degrees! I assume inside of the tips of the jetties is not ocean, but river. And we all were of the belief that wild ocean coho was closed. But beyond that ... ???? Do you have any idea what the current regulations are for both coho and chinook landed in the channel? And perhaps more important, where do YOU get your current salmon regulations?
@NK-np1he

@@NK-np1he, ODFW's website is abusive. It is so insane that activities that can carry massive fines if you make one tiny mistake are provided with such pathetic guidance. It's as if they _want_ us to be criminals. It truly makes my blood boil. Oh, and one more point, how do you like the 7 pixel photos used to ID fish? Google any fish and there are trillions of stunning, crystal clear photos. But ODFW's photos -- like those for identifying salmon -- are as bizarre as they are absurd.

Angling Addicts PNW what is a good setup for river salmon fishing?

@@1jeliaz - all the setups are good for river fishing but the best setup is dictated by the type of water, as well as water and weather conditions. Throwing spinners is easy but it’s not the best technique anywhere and all the time.. learning as many techniques as possible and knowing when to use them will get you more fish, that’s all I could say

10'6" gives you better mending ability, especially when wading.

Just learned the mono 6 lb is the same diameter as the 20 lb braided.

How much drag do I need for coho?

Really depends on what kind of line you are running and what lb test.. i'm usually fishing 30lb braid with 15-20lb fluorocarbon, and i know that will hold up with my drag set tight enough that i can just barely pull line from the reel by hand. Coho are super active when you hook them and it's better to be too loose than too tight, since you are more likely to brake off with a really tight drag.... you will know after you hook into one whether you are too loose or too tight...... then you can dial your reel in :) Good luck out there

@@AnglingAddictsPNWI use 35lbs braid. And usually 12, or 15lbs floro leader. What would the ideal drag be? I was thinking 12 or 15lbs drag, but I'm not sure.

I’m guessing it’s Eddie that uses the straight braid no leader😂
