What kind of flies/set up would you use at this time of year in normal conditions (Autumn)? I fish a spate river which is kind of peaty coloured. Nice fish btw.

At this time of year I use a darker burnt orange Ally's shrimp pattern with gold ribbing but most of the late salmon that I caught were on a silver ribbed burnt Ally's. If fishing a spate river yellow / black cascades are a great fly for coloured water and also a park shrimp fly. Depending on the clarity I would go bright in low visibility and then as the clarity got better change to smaller slightly darker patterns. In the higher water I would definitely use a sinking polyleader or sinking line but again as the water levels dropped move back to a sink tip that gets down but isn't snagging up. Treat late autumn fishing like spring fishing you have to get down and move fish so sink tips are a must big flies in high water smaller patterns in the lower water. Hope that helps.

@@MrKingfisher3 Thanks for the tips, seeing plenty of fish but they are taking nothing at the minute. Much appreciated.

Unfortunately that's salmon fishing somedays it's easy and especially in late season it can be very hard so enjoy the good day's because there will alway's be tough day's like you're getting now. Another trick put on a dropper 3ft above the shrimp fly of a Wickham's fancy or Dunkelt size 12 single trout fly that can take more salmon in late season than most salmon flies.
