I have my cross hikes just over a year now and I dont have a bad word to say! I hike in Ireland ( which is wet all year round ) and I can honestly say they have kept me very dry, even going up to the ankle sometimes in water and bog, also used them in Iceland in the winter, for a weeks hiking in snow, they also performed well

I've been a Salomon fan for a while and had have multiple pairs over the years. I only had one bad pair where the sole came off but apart from that I've worn several pairs out. I'm just slowly getting into ultras and trail running (at 52 slow is the only way) so might try a pair. Cheers.

I cut apart an old pair of Salomon XA gore-Tex to see why they leak. The outer mesh itself is surprisingly water-resistant. Most of the plentiful stitching isn't, water goes straight through in some places. Inside the boot is a canvas bootie held together with heat-sealed/glued tape. Once the canvas is waterlogged the thin inner layer of gore-tex membrane inside gets to work. Looking closely with a magnifier it's clear the tiny holes in the material which allow sweat water vapor to escape elongate at the flex points. Water can then pass straight through from the outside. There is no easy answer to make lightweight footwear breathable and water resistant. The 100% waterproof boots I own are clunky Hanwags with a leather lining and a one-piece leather upper. As long as they are kept waxed they are waterproof and remain so for many years. I have also had luck with the Salomon Ultra X trek. These have a thin real leather upper with few seams and a high shaft. Very light and water resistant. After 5 years in the catalogue Salomon discontinued them this year!

I use them with pants that cover the tops hunting and what not. Keeps debris out of the shoe. Speed cross is the daily when not wearing pants.

I have been tempted by Salomons but not gone there yet. My go-to make for years has been Scarpa for my main boots, and Merrell for lighter trail shoes. I will need another new pair this year and now will look at Salomons too. Are they a narrow boot or wider? My feet are short and wide so it is not always easy to find comfortable boots. Good review Rhys, thanks for the video. Cheers, W :)
@RhysGarrard3 жыл бұрын
They used to be narrow, which was a massive bonus for feeling more in control and gripping effectively. They've now gone wider in my opinion which can make your feet feel a little loose. Personally I'm swapping all my footwear to Lasportiva currently, I've had my winter boots off them and couldn't be happier. Definitely time for a change for me 😊

Scarpa wearer here. I tried Salomon and I know they have their fans but I had a similar problem. Durability and water ingress. It's not like Salomon are cheap. I found Cross Hikes were very comfortable, excellent traction but they wore too quickly and let in some water.

@@RhysGarrard How did your Sportiva hold up? I was thinking of trying the Raptor 2
@AR9ify2 жыл бұрын
You need to clean them. Not to look good but to keep them functional. The Gore-Tex membrane will loose it's waterproofing when dirt goes into the pores, unlike Dermizax. That's just how Gore-Tex is.
@AR9ify2 жыл бұрын
Dirt in the pores not just ruins waterproofing but also breathability.

The ortholite in my x ultra 3's I just picked up KILL my right foot. Any insole recommendations?
@karupt4223 жыл бұрын
Does this shoe have a flat insole area? If not I can't put my hard plastic orthotic in it.

Great review, I own Speedcross 5 and Speedcross Vario for trail running, and Quest 4d GTX as a full hiking boot, but looking for a shoe with some ankle protection (not necessarily support but protection from catching on rocks or my other foot) for some fastpacking style trips that aren’t quite Ultra runs, but need to be lighter and more nimble than traditional backpacking. Think 25-30L pack for 2-3 days with lightweight gear and a mix of walking fast up and running flats/downs. Really thought these would be just the ticket for it..... sounds like I need a rethink.

I've worn salomons for so long, along with newer Scarpa and La sportiva. Don't get me wrong they are useable, however at £165 they really really miss the mark. The massive blow for me has been the insole change, they really feel like they've lost that Salomon feel. More like overpriced rubbishy boots claiming to do things that they simply don't. I'm going to purchase some La Spotiva trail shoes for my summer in the mountains instead.

Salomon shoes aren't as we know! I owned a pair of speed cross 4 and they were fantastic. Moved on to Speed Cross 6, big mistake, sole wasn't as soft as old ones, and after 6 hikes (about 120km+) were starting to show serious signs of wear. Sole started to peel off so sent them to warranty witch was accepted. So Salomon isn't worth buying anymore!

It’s gore Tex, you have to wash your gear and replace the DWR, anyone who buys gore Tex knows this.🤷♂️😳😉
@RaWeR943 жыл бұрын
While you are right about that... that doesnt effect the waterproofness of the gore-tex. you wash them to make sure they breath and you apply DWR to make sure the material on the outside doesnt soak up water. gore-tex itself is just a membrane inside the shoe. My experience with salomon is that, while super comfy, they the membrane WILL break rather soon.
@davidcallan78443 жыл бұрын
@@RaWeR94 Sure everyone has their individual experience and yes gore Tex is just a membrane but it drives me nuts when a reviewer plunks a piece of technical gear covered in crap on the table that goes to the tops of their ankles and complains that it didn’t prevent their knees from getting wet and muddy or walking in waist deep water and saying the hole that you put your foot in let water get their socks wet. Plus people generally not taking care of their gear on these channels because the brand is just gonna send them more stuff just shows a lot of contempt. I’ve heard both sides with Salomon, gear wise I’ve never had an issue. Everything does eventually wear out, I’m on my 5th pair of Speedcross 5’s but put 100’s of tough miles in each pair. Anyway, everyone’s experience is different. I just find that reviews seem to mistreat the gear or don’t use it to its full potential. Could have been an awesome review for the product had he said that he washed them reapplied DWR and could easily get another couple hundred miles out of it . I’ve had my cross hikes for 3 seasons, get the salt and mud off of them and they look like new. To each their own though.🤷♂️😳🤘🏃♂️

Cut open some of your old gore-tex shoes. The Gore-tex membrane is inside a sealed bootie unit sewn into the footwear. It cannot be treated directly very well although putting boots through a cold wash can keep things clean. Clean outer mesh will last longer without friction on the seams from dirt.
@davidcallan78442 жыл бұрын
@@1maico1 Depends on what shoe and what goretex you’re talking about. GORE makes a ton of products, not all are equal. Salomon fashion products are not made to the same standard as their pro performance sports products. Apples and oranges, what’s the purpose of use, mall walking or back country winter fast packing . Completely different product lines and quality of materials a $350 Salomon isn’t the same as a $200 Salomon .
@1maico12 жыл бұрын
@@davidcallan7844 We are talking about the cross hikes in the video. The silver lining and interior membrane are the same as the XA pro I cut in half. The X ultra line are the same too. If I peel back the tongue lining on my quest 4 the membrane is the same, a thin off-white material of the same thickness. The difference is a thin foam backing added and a brushed grey-green lining rather than silver. Some old Salomon speecross 3 GTX gore-tex I have are the same as the cross hike.
