Thank you for posting this performance! I get to hear Salonen conduct this piece in two days in Chicago. After hearing your performance here on KZbin, I can't wait! I have also enjoyed your performance of Esa-Pekka conducting your ensemble in the Mother Goose Suite. I agree with others that your concert hall is wonderful. Wish I could visit in person, but it's a bit of a drive from Milwaukee WI!

This is todays Good News. Somewhat of eclectic music, still with its own shape and personality. Sometimes it reminds me of Arnold Bax: Nowember Woods, or other of his works. What may come? I hopefully wait for a miracle.

Great performance! As always from this orchestra, and I’ve enjoyed all of his music I’ve heard. The bright colors go well in a piece named after a constellation. Some of the music may reflect Castor & Pollux in mythology...I’ll have to find their stories. Thanks for the upload!

Not sure if that was a wry smile on the composer/conductor's face after that cheeky reference to 'Mercury' in the second movement... Beautiful work.

@@NDRKlassik Thank you. Two years ago I proofread a thesis on the construction of your wonderful concert hall. A fascinating study, which included the acoustics, seating plan & contracting process. What a marvellous & inspiring vision & project.

Interesting! I heard "Castor" premiered in Los Angeles as a standalone piece back in 2019. I believe he premiered it not long after Pollux was premiered (also in Los Angeles, I believe), so it's fascinating to hear them both as a continuous, uninterrupted work. If anything, I'm now curious, trying to recall how Castor started back in 2019 without Pollux!

Great to hear from an appreciative music-lover in Tokyo. One day I will get to Japan and much of that time will be in Tokyo. This is my first listen to this Salonen composition. Its orchestral sounds are wondrously inventive.

It is process music with bits of melodic writing thrown-in. It's cleverly scored, but when the melodic writing bits come in, they have no content, they are mere decorative lines without any character or identity. Everything is in the surface. Nice sound but no musical content. It is typical 'conductors music', and quite pretentious at that, with all the pompous humbug. It's music for well-meaning and generous audiences who have gravely suffered from unbearable contemporary pieces and are now very happy to hear something that actually has something like a 'nice sound'. So, as far as contemporary music is concerned, progress indeed, but what a meagre expectation and satisfaction.

This is both a somewhat mean comment - and spot on! I'm very ambivalent about Salonen's compositions myself. Kindof a guilty pleasure to enjoy them. The thing is: they're very well orchestrated, they do have a real dramaturgy, there's a lot of variety, colors, thematic shapes... But I agree: all of that is a bit on the surface. On the other hand, Salonen's way better imho than that overrated Saariaho or often even Lindberg. But just go listen to 30 seconds of George Benjamin and you'll hear the difference between talent and genius.
