Salsa Beargrease 2021 | Rocky Mountain Fat biking | Fat Bike

This is a recent ride I did at high elevation in the snow of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It was a great test of the 2021 Salsa Beargrease and the 27.5x4” 45nrth Van Helga tires. Although the weather was beautiful, the temps were warming and the trail conditions were not ideal, but the bike performed well.

We ride fat bikes on the Western Slope in Colorado (Montrose area), and some people use a bear bell (it randomly rings, you don't have to flick it manually) for making noise to warn bears that we're around (if I'm riding alone, I usually have some music playing from my phone) - they avoid people when possible, but you don't want to surprise them or get between them and their cubs. Not really an issue in the winter when they're hibernating, but the warm weather can wake some of them up ...

Thanks very much for the great videos, they're very well done, and give the viewer a very realistic fat biking experience! I've been riding my Salsa Mukluk on Colorado's Western Slope year-round since 2015, and winter riding is really my favorite, as I enjoy the absolute solitude of snow riding. As you've pointed out, it really is an art because of the varying snow conditions. Hard packed, fresh snow on packed trails, breaking through crust on deep drifts, ice, slush, etc., they all require a lot of balance and skill. I've even learned to appreciate riding in ruts (best traction option at times), it really does improve your overall mountain biking skills. I'm a 68 year old codger - fat biking keeps me happy and active, and I hope to be riding for many more years.

Beautiful country you guys got out there. Is there any groomed winterbiking trail networks out that way?

I’m not aware of any groomed trails for fatbiking in my immediate area, I do know some of the ski resort areas do some of that. Most of the trails up in the mountains remain multi use, but the community is pretty good about giving reports on conditions and they typically get good traffic after snow and become rideable quickly. The area in this video is a bit more off the radar, which can be good and bad. Thanks for watching!!

The snow season is winding down on my first season of fat biking here in Connecticut. I encountered some of that greasy snow a few days ago. It was very difficult to maintain control. A few weeks prior to that, we had what I would call hero snow. Absolutely flying with tremendous grip!

Yep! Sometimes just never know what you’re in for! When it’s good though, it is so fun! Despite the less than ideal snow conditions, I did love the blazing sun and pleasant conditions up there, don’t always get those days high up here.
