@@shhadoww7 It’s tough to say. But do they measure true to size? My understanding is that a lot of 4.5-in tires measure closer to 4.3 on anything but the very widest of rims
@ElevationEveryWeekend3 күн бұрын
@@PoorWorksmanship yes measuring tire width is a tough one, due to variations in tire pressure, side lug design, and yes wheel width. I will say it this way, they measure “true to size” in their relation to the 4” and 4.5” or 4.8” tires I have used. Assuming about an 80mm wide wheel, which is by far the most common width in use today.

Love your channel man, all solid info, NO BS filler 👍. When you talk Surly fatbikes, I listen. I have a Wednesday but am looking at an ICT in last years Safety Mask blue. I know your ICT is large, mind if I ask your height/inseam? I'm 5'-11"/33" and 55 years old. I found my large Wednesday a bit long in the TT/reach for my liking so I shortened the TT with a shorter stem and Surly Sunrise bar. Wondering if the medium ICT would be better for me. Any thoughts you can share are appreciated my dude.
@ElevationEveryWeekend13 күн бұрын
@@smokeycanuck8058 sizing is a tough one in general from afar. Surly bikes do tend to run a little bigger than most others in my experience. I have a 2014 Pugsley in medium that is perfectly comfortable for me, but yes my ICT is a large and I do think it fits me a bit better. I am also 5’11” with about a 32/33 inseam. My reach is what I would consider proportional. Surly fatbikes also tend to have longer stems, so as you know adjusting that can help with reach. If you can test ride the ICT to find out for sure it would be ideal, but I know that’s not always possible. Thanks for watching the channel, much more Surly fat bike stuff is on the way!

@@bva8252 I don’t know anything about that bike. In taking a quick look, it appears to have lower end, but respectable name brand components, which is good. I can’t comment on any of the battery/drive components. It has decent tires on it as well. It does appear to have a more upright commuter geometry, which you may prefer. I too have a DV9 LG SLX version and put almost 800 mils on it since I got it a year ago. For me it took a lot of getting use to and I almost sold the bike, but it’s currently my “do everything” bike and it really does everything well, especially climbing. I too changed to a 70mm stem and now I’m back to the 50mm because I like the it better for tech climbs and manuals. The best upgrade was tires, the Rekon Race are fast, but grip is just not good enough in the AZ desert and places like Sedona. I’m now on Maxxis Ardents 2.4 front/back and they roll almost as fast at the Rekons and handle the chunk much better. At some point I want to try a fast rolling 2.6 in the rear because at 61 years old the AZ chunk can get a bit rough. Anyway I enjoyed your 1 year review and I look forward to comparing upgrades in the future…

Thanks for the apples to apples comparison. New to both fat tires and e-bikes. Questions: 1. The “rear” transmission is wireless and apparently has a small battery. If, for some reason, the electronics fail, can the gears somehow still be switched manually? 2. Similarly, if the main 630Mw battery dies, how difficult is it to leg power out of the boondocks on a 56 pounder? I was in a store checking out a QuietKat and the salesman said it would “suck” on that 75 lb beast, not to mention just getting it in the bed of my pickup.
@ElevationEveryWeekend2 ай бұрын
@@bva8252 I think for the most part if the battery dies you will be really limited in changing gears on the Transmission, I think I have seen that there is limited ability to manually move it a little bit, but can’t say I tested that. As for the bikes battery dying, yes riding a 56lbs fat bike with no e-assist wouldn’t be ideal, it will largely depend on the terrain. Hopefully you still have all of your gears which would be really helpful, and make it doable. I think one of those 75lbs e-fatbikes would just be brutal, and why I personally wouldn’t even consider them. I have ridden one of those and they handle really sluggish to me even with e-assist for forward motion.

I love this new bike and would buy out in a heartbeat as a go anywhere do anything bike. I would commute with it on the public streets, recreate with it on bike expeditions, go gravel grinding, across fields and along the beach -- just like I do now on my Pugsley. My bike goes where I go. The End. And when it can't -- I find a new one that can. And this new Surly can definitely go wherever I want to go. I can see where Surly is going with this bike. Surly and I think alike... on my Pugsley, I removed the front and rear derailleur and built a wheel with a Shimano 8 speed hub in it. It was a dream come true! Absolutely some of the most maintenance free fun I've ever had on a bike. Knowing what I know now however, I should have installed a Rolloff instead. The Shimano performs horribly here in our South Dakota winters. The extreme cold freezes the lube inside the hub and it is a true bear to pedal when that happens. But when that happens, I whip out my Jones LWB Heavy Duty Electric bike and bypass all of that nonsense. Looks like what I need do now is sell the Pug and buy the new Moonlander! It shall be my new maintenance free marauding machine! Fat's-where-it's-at. Period. I don't care what kind of driving I'm doing. I'm doing it on a fat bike.
