Salt for Svanetia (Jim Shvante) is a 1930 Soviet-Georgian silent documentary film directed by Mikhail Kalatozishvili. As one of the earliest ethnographic films, it documents the life of the Svan people in the isolated mountain village of Ushguli in Svanetia, in the northwestern part of the Georgian Soviet Republic.

Documentaries from the Silent Film Era are a rare thing. It was a marvel to be able to experience this in May of 2022 @ the Castro Theatre, San Francisco.

Damn! That was great! The cinematography was wonderful and the imagery was so evocative. Soviet propaganda really didn't hold back! But why was it always so homoerotic?

Doesn’t seem homoerotic to me. I always find that the societies in which homosexuality is so ostracised and demonised often have more openly Inter-masculine outward signs of affection. Societies with more liberal attitudes to homosexuality seem to over-detect homoeroticism and also underplay platonic man on man love. Just an observation
