3:34 time to break out the plank stretcher! all kidding aside, your carpentry skills and attention to detail are on-point, this is a master-class in hand-building a dinghy, thank you for the entertainment and the education

Garrett you need to go to harbor freight and get a couple pairs of safety wire pliers, it would make thing a whole lot easier

Thank you for another great episode! Here in the UK it has been raining cats and dogs big time. Canals with river sections were closed, but worst of all the mushroom vent above my bed sprung a leak! Today it finally dried out enough for me to do a temporary gaffer-tape fix around its base and can look forward to a dry bed. Soggy mattresses suck! All seems warm and dry in California 🙂

You two are the only people i follow on you tube that i would love to spend an afternoon sitting in a backyard and just hang out with and share stories! Keep it up you two!

yup yup, this is why all dads are required to keep a bunch of random junk, spares, old parts, and scraps in their garage, and no it is *not trash* and shouldn't all be cleared out to be gotten rid of, this is a 'collection' of things that could be useful ....yes maybe only 1% might be used in the next 15~20years, but it will be perfect for the thing you need, however you must keep it all because you just never know what will be needed - good job dad!

Cable ties are another convenient way of securing the planks to each other. This is shaping up to be a very pretty boat. Let us hope that no-one decides that they like it enough to make off with it.

I built an A-Class catamaran in 1979 out of 1/8" ply using stitch and glue. Each hull was two sheets of ply, 20' by 2'. I cut 8' by 4' sheets of ply in half lengthwise and used scarf joints to make almost 20' by 2' sheets. I had copper wire stitches every 3" or so. It worked really well.

Excellent video, thank you both for documenting this. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems to me that Garrett was a bit reticent on the video blogging early in the series, Kudoes on him for really stepping up his game and embracing the intrusion into his private domain. The video editing, as always, was superb. Thank you both, very much, for contributing this documentary. As always I 'Liked' the video and I am 'Subscribed'! Sam

Hi guys!! Looking good!! Maybe reinforce the gunnel, since its there the most pressure happens. Instead of fenders, maybe you can find these grey halfhard plastic lenghts, that we have in sweden. Roughly a meter long,ca 4 cm thick, and 6-7 cm wide. Could be tied with string, and would cover entire gunnel...always there,no hassle with loose fenders.... Just an idea. Or fasten fenders lenghtwise along the gunnel.... Anyway, good luck and allda bestest from mikke ( now in greece)

I almost bought this kit. Instead, I built a strip planked Cosine Werry. It took me probably 500 hours labor. For comparable looks and performance, I had to construct the mold stations from onion skin patterns in the book and construct the strongback first. Like you, all this was done outdoors but without benefit of California climate. 17 years later, I still have the completed boat in nice shape. I have built in stitch and glue and strip plank both, and each has it's benefits. I suspect strip plank is lighter, stronger, and more consistent. Would I change my choice now, with hindsite? Probably.

Are you going to be adding like an aluminum strip from the bow down the length of the keel to protect the bottom of the boat when you go up to Rocky beaches? Or maybe some carbon fiber strips going down the center of the keel or possibly the whole under the waterline portion of the boat.

when my simcard internet connection works at my Himalayan hermit homestead ,I check sometimes on sailing channels ,because I miss the sea. Your story of building and sailing your own wooden boat as a lovely couple is very nice and commendable and I have heard poetry in your story telling . I rejoice .Personally ,I prefer metal and wooden and bamboo boats ,all of them recyclable ,whereas modern 'plastic' boats have an ongoing ,unsolved environmental problem . In this dinghy project ,you will use lots of fiberglassing for strength . I wonder ,why ,capable craftspeople as you are ,you did not make an aluminum dinghy ,with great sail and rowing capabilities, longer lasting and adding welding to your skills ?
