We sailed all the way to Pineapple Cay to visit their island farm. The Bahamas island Pineapple Cay is beautiful with several small islands surrounding. We were able to climb and explore one of the smaller islands that had a small cave seen from the water. The hike up the side of the island was a bit nerve wracking as there were numerous skeletal remains of small animals. The next morning we headed to the big island, Pineapple Cay Bahamas to walk to the island farm. We read they bake fresh Cinnamon rolls daily and they often sell out early. We were lucky to get there in time before the cinnamon rolls were gone but we were VERY surprised to see the AMAZING produce! We have never, not even in the US seen produce like this!

Hi guys! We have a favor to ask. The algorithm has not been friendly to us recently. 😩 You can help us with this by watching all the way to the end and sharing with someone else. If you like extra credit, come back and watch it again (maybe with your spouse). We’re barely keeping our nose above water on YT. Thank you so much!! C

In gear is where it should be with engine off, this will feather the propellor if it is a feathering type. It will also stop you shafts turning this stops the bearings and the seals wearing out. Sailed for a decade, in gear every time. Cheers

Been there (by car, does that count?) and loved it especially the prices! Our great boat neighbors rented a car and the back seat follows the front...We were at the marina at the south end of the Island. You should check it out!

Their presentation was AMAZING! I saw some produce labels on the citrus and avocados. I’m sure they are importing at least a few things. It looked like the majority of items were being grown on sight or locally.

You expressed an interest in knowing opinions about letting your props spin under way or locking them. I prefer locking them despite the obvious drag. The reason being that transmission designs can differ greatly and the typical failure that happens from not locking the props with the engine is transmission or saildrive failure. They fail because the fluid inside can't circulate at all in some designs and not circulate enough on others. Plus as that prop spins it is wearing multiple internal parts. If the fluid doesn't pump/splash when the prop turns depending on the design then you can expect a bunch of metal confetti. I would look at Gori props...they seem to be better than the Flexofold, and as a standby MaxProp. The MaxProp isn't as fast as the Gori but are known to be really reliable if properly serviced. Though you need to find out about it from the saildrive manufacturer. Some people have aftermarket sail drives. I think Yanmar suggests freewheeling.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are Yanmar. SD31 We found a Yanmar sail drive manual online that said to leave them in neutral. Apparently in gear they can jam up somehow.

@@SaltyEscape Guess it is different then, my SD130 sail drives say to put them in reverse.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
@@SV-Flying-Tigress hmmmm. The manual suggested the gears could seize or jam if we have them in gear while sailing. I found it confusing also because it’s supposedly ok to put in gear with feathered props. 🤷‍♂️
@SV-Flying-Tigress

@@SaltyEscape I have max-props so yep, that is a big difference. Coming from aviation a windmilling prop adds a L-O-T of drag and significantly reduces engine-out glide range. *but* if your saildrive manual says neutral, then neutral it should be.

Not sure about leaving in gear or out or leaving in reverse .not sure what would be the best to give the lowest wear on the SD or shaft or gears...did you check the props for barnicles those little suckers could cause the unbalance and vibrations

We eventually found a Yanmar SD31 manual online that says to keep it in neutral unless they are feathered. Yeah. There was some small growth. I’ll go scrape it off and see if the vibe continues. Thanks!

This is from Yanmar: "Yanmar requires that if sailing with the engine OFF (not running) the transmission shifter must be in the neutral position or internal damage to the gear or sail-drive will result." From just a cursory look at the forums, this seems to be the consensus. I suppose if your prop was articulating, it wouldn't matter.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We saw that too. It’s confusing, to me at least, how you can’t put it in gear because it may lock inside the transmission… unless you have feathering props and then it’s okay. We’ve decided to keep it in neutral. Thanks for looking!

Your props are turning. You should probably put it in reverse. The turning is called "windmilling" and it slows you down. If conditions are really stable you might notice a .1 or .2 KTS difference. There is no good reason to have them turning.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
I should have said these are sail drives, Yanmar SD-31. We have since found a manual for these saildrives that says they should be in neutral unless we have feathered props (we dont) and in that case you put it in reverse briefly and back in neutral to feather them.
@4x4smile
@4x4smile Күн бұрын
Ahh nice one makes sense with no feathering to let them turn, but I bet the saildrives wear as a result. Maybe look at upgrading to feathering props, they are less efficent than solids when motoring but reduce drag when under sail. If you do upgrade do your research into feathering props some are not good at all.
