Important thing to say about the lack of gender neutrality in Spanish is that there is a movement to use "-e" as a neutral ending since it doesn't indicate masculine or feminine. Also, elle has been introduced as a neutral pronoun. It hasn't really caught on yet, but I think it's a very valid and good direction to take for the language. Most opposition I've seen from people are either those who are just opposed to the idea of gender neutrality in general or who are trying to be weirdly puritanical about the language even though languages change constantly throughout history.
